She was born and raised in Wise County, Va., and came to Letcher County, Ky., as a young woman and lived most of her life there. She owned and operated Hunsaker Market at Payne Gap, Ky., for 50 years. She had been recognized as the oldest living businesswoman in Letcher County, Ky. Mrs. Hunsaker was a member of Payne Gap Freewill Baptist Church and had been instrumental in helping raise the funds to build the church. She was the widow of James Clifton Hunsaker. She is survived by two daughters, Peggy Greer and Betty Hunsaker, both of Jenkins, Ky.; two sons, Curtis Hunsaker, Abingdon, Va., and Teddy Hunsaker, Jenkins, Ky.; one sister, Bonnie Pritchard, Jenkins, Ky.; 11 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. He was born in Tazewell, Va., and was the son of the late Dave and Alice Bowling Martin, both Tazewell, Va., natives. He had made his home in the Belfast area for most of his life and was a retired self-employed farmer. He was of the Church of God faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lewis Martin; one son, Walter Robert Markham; one grandson, William Markham; eight sisters; and six brothers. She was the daughter of the late Stanhope and Bessie Lacy Sr. She was born in South Boston, Va., and had lived in Halifax, Va., before moving to Bristol. She received her elementary and high school education in Bristol, Tenn. She attended Tennessee State University, Nashville, where she received a bachelor of science degree in elementary education. Her first teaching assignment was in Henderson, Tenn. She later moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where she was employed by the Milwaukee public school system for 20 years. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Walter Stewart and Rev. Ralph Peyton, who passed away in 1997. She returned to Bristol to the care of her sister, Mrs. Bettie L. Robinson, who preceded her in death, and her devoted brother-in-law, Patrick H. Robinson Jr. Upon her return to Bristol she rededicated her life to Christ and became a member of John Wesley United Methodist Church. She was a member of Allen Chapel AME Church while living in Ohio. She is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Edith L. Jones and husband, Earnest Jones, Newark, N.J., Mrs. Eva L. Quesenberry Jr. BIG STONE GAP, Va. -- Milford Spencer "Ques" Quesenberry Jr., 83, died March 24, 2001, after an extended illness. A lifelong resident of Wise County, he served with distinction as a captain in the U.S. Army during World War II, earning the Bronze Star, the Oak Leaf Cluster to the Bronze Star, two Purple Hearts, the European Theater Operations Ribbon with four battle stars, the Presidential Unit Citation, the Croix de Guerre from the French government for bravery and the American Defense Ribbon, among others. After the war, he founded what later became Quesenberry's, Inc., general contractors. Mr. Quesenberry worked on behalf of many community causes and was instrumental in the establishment of the C. Bascom Slemp Library and Wellmont Lonesome Pine Hospital, where he served as a member of the board of directors for many years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Milford Spencer Quesenberry Sr. and Elizabeth Skeens Quesenberry. Survivors include his loving and devoted wife, Agnes B. Quesenberry; four children, daughter, Leslie Q. Simonet and husband, Don of Overland Park, Kansas, son, Spencer D. He was a Navy veteran serving in the Korean Conflict, a member of Bethel Chapel Freewill Baptist Church, Wise, Va., a member of the gospel singing groups, "The Ole Time Way" and "Bethel Chapel Quartet" and a loving father, grandfather and friend to many. He was a former superintendent of Public Works for Wise County. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Partha Roberson; a brother, Joseph (Jodie) Roberson; and his grandson, James Dakota (Cody) Stanley. Quesenberry Jr. BIG STONE GAP, Va. -- Milford Spencer "Ques" Quesenberry Jr., 83, died March 24, 2001, after an extended illness. A lifelong resident of Wise County, he served with distinction as a captain in the U.S. Army during World War II, earning the Bronze Star, the Oak Leaf Cluster to the Bronze Star, two Purple Hearts, the European Theater Operations Ribbon with four battle stars, the Presidential Unit Citation, the Croix de Guerre from the French government for bravery and the American Defense Ribbon, among others. After the war, he founded what later became Quesenberry's, Inc., general contractors. Mr. Quesenberry worked on behalf of many community causes and was instrumental in the establishment of the C. Bascom Slemp Library and Wellmont Lonesome Pine Hospital, where he served as a member of the board of directors for many years. Born May 5, 1919, in Russell County, Va., he was the son of the late George Cowan and Eliza Presley Jackson of Honaker. He was a 1937 graduate of Honaker High School. He attended he University of Virginia and Virginia Tech. He had worked at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company. He served in the United States Navy during World War II, assigned to the USS Krishna RL 38. After World War II, he returned to Honaker to work as an automobile mechanic. He later started a teaching career as a vocational welding instructor at the Russell County Vocation School at Lebanon, Va. He retired from the Russell County School System in 1984. He was a member of the Pruner Masonic Lodge AF&AM of Honaker, the Royal Arch Commandary of Castlewood, Va., and the Kazim Temple of Roanoke, Va. He was instrumental in forming and serving in various offices in the Tri-City Nu-Voice Club for Laryngectomees. He was active in the American Cancer Society, serving on the steering committee of the Virginia Division of Laryngectomees. He received the Laryngectomee of the Year Award in 1994. He was a member of the VFW Patton-Crosswhite Post 6975 of Bristol, Tenn. He was an avid reader and artist. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his devoted wife, Katherine Combs Jackson. James Beecher Jackson ABINGDON, Va. -- Mr. James Beecher Jackson, 81, formerly of Honaker and Abingdon, and later residing at Outlook Pointe, Bristol, Tenn., passed away Tuesday, March 27, 2001, in Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol, Tenn. Born May 5, 1919, in Russell County, Va., he was the son of the late George Cowan and Eliza Presley Jackson of Honaker. He was a 1937 graduate of Honaker High School. He attended the University of Virginia and Virginia Tech. He had worked at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company. He served in the United States Navy during World War II, assigned to the USS Krishna RL 38. After World War II, he returned to Honaker to work as an automobile mechanic. He later started a teaching career as a vocational welding instructor at Russell County Vocational School in Lebanon, Va. He retired from the Russell County School System in 1984. He was of the Baptist faith. He was a member of the Pruner Masonic Lodge AF&AM of Honaker, the Royal Arch Commandary of Castlewood, Va., and the Kazim Temple of Roanoke, Va. He was instrumental in forming and serving in various offices in the Tri-City Nu-Voice Club for Laryngectomees. He was active in the American Cancer Society, serving on the steering committee of the Virginia Division of Laryngectomees. He received the Laryngectomee of the Year Award in 1994. He was a member of the VFW Patton-Crosswhite Post 6975 of Bristol, Tenn. He was an avid reader and artist. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his devoted wife, Katherine Combs Jackson. He was a native of Ashe County, N.C., and was a son of the late Amos and Abby Greer Sluder. He was preceded in death by two sons, Donald Sluder and Teddy Sluder. Mr. Sluder was a former employee of Tipton Construction of Bristol, Tenn., for 45 years and a member of the Taylorsville Masonic Lodge 243 F&AM for 52 years.
