Campbell ABINGDON -- Patricia "Trisha" Winters Campbell, 33, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002, at the University of Virginia hospital in Charlottesville, Va. She was a life long resident of Washington County, Va., and was the daughter of Bill and Lois Winters of Abingdon. She attended the William N. Neff Vocational Center and graduated from Holston High School in 1987. She also attended the Virginia Highlands Community College and was of the Baptist faith. In addition to her parents, she is also survived by her husband, Mike Campbell of Abingdon; her paternal grandparents, Omar and Pearl Winters of Damascus; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2002, at the graveside in Sunset Memorial Park in Damascus with Rev. Gary Ritchie and Rev. Oliver Asher officiating. Pallbearers will be James Walls, Roy Mahala, Jimmy Walker, Bill Blevins, Bobby Moore Jr., Gordon Taylor, Omar Winters Jr. and Russell Wall Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be Jason Burgess and Robbie Parks. Albert Kenneth Carrier BLUFF CITY -- Albert Kenneth Carrier, 80, of 409 Carter St., died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002, at Erwin Health Care Center following a lengthy illness. A native of Bluff City, he was a son of the late Albert Ernest and Cora Lee Harkleroad Carrier. Mr. Carrier was a member of Bluff City Baptist Church where he served as deacon, chairman of the deacons, trustee and Sunday School teacher. He was a member and former chairman of the 16th District Democratic Party of Sullivan County. During World War II from January 1943 to December 1945, he served in England and France as a Tech 4 sergeant in the 752nd U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. For his service he received the EAME Theater Ribbon with four Bronze Stars, the Good Conduct Ribbon, the Victory Medal and a citation. Mr. Carrier retired from East High School, where he served as principal from 1968 until 1979. He was principal at Bluff City High School from 1953 until 1968. He taught at Bluff City High School in 1952 and at Blountville High School 1950-1951. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from East Tennessee State University. Mr. Carrier was a charter member and past president of the Bluff City Civitan Club. He was a charter member and 1st Commander of the Preston Fleenor VFW Post 9629, Bluff City. He also was the first president of the Bluff City Morning View Cemetery Association. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter in 1965. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Mildred Elizabeth "Betty" Mears Carrier of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Anna Paulette Carrier and John Randall Armstrong, Bluff City; four grandchildren, Jennifer Nicole Carrier Armstrong, Bryan Randall Kenneth and wife, Jennifer Lynne Armstrong, Anna Elizabeth Carrier Armstrong and Cory Archer Armstrong, all of Bluff City; two sisters, Edna Louise Carrier and Margaret Nell Jones, both of Bluff City; one brother, Harvey Lynn Carrier, Bluff City; two nieces, Carole Bell, Bristol Tennessee, and Amanda Carrier Anderson, Bluff City; one nephew, Jimmy Jones, Bluff City; and five grand-nieces and grand-nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2002, from Bluff City Baptist Church and Rev. Jerry Lyons and Rev. Joe Blankenship officiating. Graveside and interment service will follow the funeral service in the Mausoleum Chapel of Glenwood Cemetery with military honors presented by Patton-Crosswhite VFW Post 6975. Clarence David Kennedy COEBURN -- Clarence David Kennedy, 78, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002, at University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville, Va. He was preceded in death by his parents, P.H. and Maude Bush Kennedy. Survivors include a sister, Oakley Holbrook, Coeburn; a brother, Carl Kennedy, Cardwell, Mo.; a special friend, Esther Shaw; and several nieces and nephews. Burial will follow in the Temple Hill Memorial Park in Castlewood. Visitation will be held at Estes Funeral Home on Monday after 6 p.m. Clarence L. Kinser HAMPTON, Va. -- Clarence L. Kinser, 82, formerly of Norton, passed away Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, at his home. He was born at Norton, on June 2, 1920, and had lived at Hampton for the last 37 years. Mr. Kinser joined the U.S. Army in 1939, serving in the Air Corps and later transferred to the U.S. Air Force. He served in the military during World War II, was held as a prisoner of war by the Japanese for 42 months, and survived the Bataan Death March. He retired from the Air Force in 1969 with the rank of senior master sergeant. Mr. Kinser was a member of the American Ex-Prisoners of War, Inc., James L. Hale Chapter, and was also a member of the American Legion, Post 0031, Hampton. He was of the Protestant faith. He was a son of the late William B. and Virgie Walden Kinser and was also preceded in death by two brothers, James "Jim" Kinser and Ray Kinser; and also by a half-brother, William Kinser. Survivors include his wife, Doris Lunsford Kinser, Hampton; two daughters, Patricia Kinser, Hampton and Amy Littleton, Manchester, Conn.; two sons, William Kinser, Dana Point, Calif., and Michael Kinser, Cary, N.C.; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Gladys Stewart, St. Paul and Lois Farmer, Norton; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. Rutherford, 65, of Bristol Tennessee, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002, at his residence. He was born in Bristol Tennessee, a son of the late Paul L. and Mary Gertrude Glenn Rutherford. He worked as a dairy farmer and attended East Bristol Freewill Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, Mr. Rutherford was preceded in death by his wife, Shelby Jean Mosier Rutherford; and two daughters, Sheila and Cynthia Rutherford. Survivors include two daughters, Jennifer Sluder and her husband, Derwin, and Rebecca Cilley and her fiancÈ, Donald Wassom, all of Bristol Tennessee; a son, Michael Rutherford and his wife, Robin of Bristol Tennessee; a brother, Harold Rutherford and his wife, Virginia; eight grandchildren, Jessica and Joey Rutherford, Amanda, Alaura, Akita and Ajheena Cilley and Terri and Josh Sluder; his mother-in-law, Lula Mosier; a sister-in-law, Betty Mosier; several nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Amy Trivette; and a very special friend, Janelle McClain.
