Mrs. Campbell, 33, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002, at the University of Virginia hospital in Charlottesville, Va. Garrett Funeral Home in Damascus, is serving the family of Patricia Campbell. Albert Kenneth Carrier BLUFF CITY -- Albert Kenneth Carrier, 80, of 409 Carter St., died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002, at Erwin Health Care Center following a lengthy illness. A native of Bluff City, he was a son of the late Albert Ernest and Cora Lee Harkleroad Carrier. Mr. Carrier was a member of Bluff City Baptist Church where he served as deacon, chairman of the deacons, trustee and Sunday School teacher. He was a member and former chairman of the 16th District Democratic Party of Sullivan County. During World War II from January 1943 to December 1945, he served in England and France as a Tech 4 sergeant in the 752nd U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. For his service he received the EAME Theater Ribbon with four bronze stars, the Good Conduct Ribbon, the Victory Medal and a citation. Mr. Carrier retired from East High School, where he served as principal from 1968 until 1979. He was principal at Bluff City High School from 1953 until 1968. He taught at Bluff City High School in 1952 and at Blountville High School 1950-1951. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from East Tennessee State University. Mr. Carrier was a charter member and past president of the Bluff City Civitan Club. He was a charter member and 1st Commander of the Preston Fleenor VFW Post 9629, Bluff City. He also was the first president of the Bluff City Morning View Cemetery Association. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter in 1965. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Mildred Elizabeth "Betty" Mears Carrier of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Anna Paulette Carrier and John Randall Armstrong, Bluff City; four grandchildren, Jennifer Nicole Carrier Armstrong, Bryan Randall Kenneth and wife, Jennifer Lynne Armstrong, Anna Elizabeth Carrier Armstrong and Cory Archer Armstrong, all of Bluff City; two sisters, Edna Louise Carrier and Margaret Nell Jones, both of Bluff City; one brother, Harvey Lynn Carrier, Bluff City; two nieces, Carole Bell, Bristol Tennessee, and Amanda Carrier Anderson, Bluff City; one nephew, Jimmy Jones, Bluff City; and five grand-nieces and grand-nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2002, from Bluff City Baptist Church with Rev. Jerry Lyons and Rev. Joe Blankenship officiating. Graveside and interment service will follow the funeral service in the Mausoleum Chapel of Glenwood Cemetery with military honors presented by Patton-Crosswhite VFW Post 6975. Active pallbearers will be Jimmy Jones, Buddy Carrier, Edmond Carrier, Phil Carrier, Chip Carrier, Wayne Bell Sr., Tom Anderson and Lavon Carrier. Honorary pallbearers will be J.C. Akard, C.O. Chaney MOUTHCARD, Ky. -- Cindy Henderson Chaney, 86, died Sunday, Dec. 29, 2002, in Pikeville Methodist Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Steven George Henderson and Sarah Elizabeth Cure Henderson, and was the widow of Cecil Chaney. She was a retired merchant. Surviving are one son, Jeff Chaney, Pikeville; one sister, Mable Adkins, Oak Ridge, Tenn.; and four grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan, 1, 2002, in Elkhorn City, Ky. Bailey Funeral Home of Elkhorn City is in charge of arrangements. Bessie W. Compton DAMASCUS -- Bessie Whitley Compton, 88, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002, in Valley Health Care Center, Chilhowie. She was a native of Washington County, Va., who lived in Houston, Texas, from 1942 to 1963 when she moved to Damacus. She had resided at Valley Health Care Center since 1995. She was a retired employee of General Electric in Houston and was retired as a co-owner of a service station in Damascus. She was a former member of the Damascus Senior Citizens and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Damascus. She was preceded in death by two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was the widow of C.L. Compton. Survivors include one daughter and husband, Hazel and Manuel Owen of Locksburg, Ark.; three sons, Russell Flannagan of Channelview, Texas; a son and wife, John and Yvonne Flannagan of Baytown, Texas, and a son and wife, Lewis and Elizabeth Whitley of Minot, N.D.; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Billie Thomas of Ladson, S.C.; one stepson, Stephen Compton of Houston; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews, including a very special niece, Mrs. Deborah Whitley Combs of Marion, Va. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in the First Baptist Church in Damascus with the Rev. Alan McCullough, Mr. David Matlock and the Rev. David Critcher officiating. Dave Fleming FISHERS, Ind. -- Dave Fleming, 72, died Dec. 29, 2002. He was the manager of Woodland Country Club for 15 years. After that he was the manager of the food operations for the Scottish Rite, retiring in 1995. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, a member of the 2nd Presbyterian Church, Sertoma Club and the Scottish Rite. He was the widower of Susan W. Atkins Fleming, Surviving are sons, Michael F. and Mark T. Fleming; brother, Dr. Michael F. Fleming; and three grandchildren. Wayne Gentry TODD, N.C. -- Wayne Gentry, 78, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002, at his residence. He was born in Ashe County, N.C., on Thursday, June 19, 1924, to the late Troy General and Cora Houck Gentry. In March of 1943, he entered the U.S. Army, serving in the Italian Campaign of World War II. The day after his discharge in 1945, he re-enlisted, serving until 1947. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, Army of Occupation Medal and World War II Victory Medal. After his return from the military, he took his family to Abingdon, Va., where he and his brothers worked as building contractors and opened the Builder's Supermarket. While in Abingdon, he was active in many civic activities. He continued to be a member of the Abingdon Masonic Lodge 48 AF & AM even after he returned to Ashe County, where he continued to be active in construction. They made their home in the Baldwin Community where he was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church. Preceding him in death were his parents, Troy and Cora Gentry, and seven siblings, Bower Gentry, Wint Gentry, Brian Gentry, Winnie Holman, Homer Gentry, Reeves Gentry and an infant sibling. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Kathleen Gentry; his son and daughter-in-law, Allen and Becky Gentry of Abingdon; his daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Thomas Green of Wytheville, Va.; two of his brothers, Worth Gentry of West Jefferson and Hill Gentry of Todd; his sister, Hilda Horton of Mooresville; his grandchildren, Troy Ashley Gentry of Bristol Virginia, and Amy Green Staley of Wytheville; and a number of nieces and nephews. The Gentry family will receive friends on Monday, Dec. 30, 2002, from 6 until 8 p.m. at Boone Family Funeral Home in West Jefferson. A graveside service will be conducted on Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2002, at 1 p.m. at Bethany United Methodist Church Cemetery in the Baldwin Community of Ashe County. Rev. Lewis Poag will preside. Pippin, 93, a well-known resident of the Greendale Community, died Sunday, Dec. 29, 2002, at his home as a result of a house fire. He was born Aug. 14, 1912, in Washington County, Va., a son of the late Druie Pippin and the late Lula Boardwine Pippin. He lived in Dayton, Ohio, for 30 years and was a retired employee of Sheffield, Inc. He returned to Washington County about 30 years ago and had lived in the Greendale Community since that time. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Carol Ann Pippin Collier; and his sister, Lucille Pippin Peters. Survivors include one brother and sister-in-law, Charlie and Sarah Pippin of Abingdon; one grandson, Brian Collier of Dayton; and several nieces and nephews. Thursam ABINGDON -- Shelia Ann Rasnake Thursam, 39, passed away Monday, Dec. 30, 2002, at the Johnston Memorial Hospital. She was born in Warren, Mich., and had lived most of her life in Madison Heights and Hazel Park, Mich., before moving to Abingdon in June 2001. She was a member of the Abingdon First Assembly of God. She is survived by two sons, Jacob Tautz and Blake Thursam, both of Abingdon; four daughters, Kristina Tautz, Vanessa Tautz, Dezerae Thursam and Mikyia Thursam, all of Abingdon; her parents, Cliff and Louise Rasnake of Hazel Park; two sisters, Susan Geist and Sandra Judd, both of Madison Heights; paternal grandmother, Mable Rasnake of Abingdon; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2003, at noon in the Farris Cremation & Funeral Center Chapel, 19415 Lee Highway, (located on the property of Forest Hills Memory Gardens) with Pastor Roger Williams officiating. Tittle BLOUNTVILLE -- Maxine Malone Tittle, 87, formerly of Cave Hill Road, passed away at Greystone Healthcare Monday, Dec. 30, 2002, after a lengthy illness. Maxine was born in Los Angeles and has lived the last 66 years in Sullivan County. She was the daughter of the late F.O. and Dolly Fauver Malone and was married to the late Daniel A.Tittle. Maxine was a member of the Buffalo Christian Church and Sullivan County FCE Club. In addition to her parents and husband, Maxine was preceded in death by a sister, Lillian Venice Malone; a granddaughter, Christina Cross Bunn; and a daughter-in-law, Betty Tittle. Maxine is survived by a daughter, Gail and husband, Bruce Cooke of Blountville; a son, Danny Tittle of Blountville; granddaughter, Betty Jane and husband, Adam (T.W.) Standridge of Benton, Tenn.; a grandson, William and wife, Becky Tittle of Bluff City; and seven great-grandchildren.
