All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ==================================================================== Bristol Herald Courier Friday, March 21, 2003 Orvin Thacker GRUNDY -- Preacher Orvin Thacker, 85 years of age, of the Stacy section of Route 3, passed away Thursday, March 20, 2003, at the Buchanan General Hospital following a brief illness. Born at Phyllis, Ky., he was the son of the late J.D. and Anna Hurley Thacker. He was a member and pastor of the Stacy Church of God, an ordained minister since 1941, a member of the United Mine Workers of America District 29, Local Union 5997, a member of the D.A.V. Commanders Club and a retired coal miner. He was preceded in death by his wife, Opal McClanahan Thacker on Nov. 21, 2000. He is survived by one daughter, Barbara Jean and her husband Danny Church of Route 3, Grundy; one brother, Virgil Thacker of Pikeville, Ky.; one stepsister, Ethel Keen of Pikeville; and one stepbrother, Curtis Ratliff of Pikeville. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, March 12, 2003, at 1 p.m. at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ancil Childress, Rev. Ronnie Rife, Evangelist Mike Rife and Elder Harold Thornsbury officiating with entombment to follow in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Va. Friends may call at the Grundy Funeral Home after 6 p.m. Friday and there will be services Friday and Saturday evenings at 7 p.m. Active pallbearers will be Jimmy Smith, Edward Osborne, Calvin Ward, Jessie Thacker, Bill Thacker, Dank Looney, Larry Crouse and David Church. Honorary pallbearers will be Boyd Keen, Alden Ward, Bransom McClanahan, Claude Ratliff, Arthur Crouse, Rodney McClanahan, Orvin McClanahan, Bobby Church, James Church, Matthew Church, T.C. Condolences may also be sent to the family at akardfh@peercom.net. Mr. Vanhook, 83, of Bristol Tennessee, died Tuesday, March 18, 2003, at Bristol Regional Medical Center following a brief illness. Akard Funeral Home is serving the family of Mr. Vanhook. Charles Lee Wampler CLINTWOOD -- Charles Lee Wampler, 84, died at Norton Community Hospital on Wednesday, March 19, 2003. A lifelong resident of Dickenson County, he was the son of James Robert and Nancy Sue Jones Wampler. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lona Sumner; sister, Francis Wampler; and seven brothers, Dawyer, Fletch, Douglas, Frank, James, Ed and Dewey Wampler; grandson, Billy Randolph Pressley; and great-grandson, Anthony Michael Piispanen. Mr. Wampler was a member of Clintwood Baptist Church and a veteran of the Army Air Corps. He was recognized for his service to his country with several citations and medals, his most prized being the Presidential Citation for Valor. He was also a member of Pound VFW Post 9600 and retired from VDOT. Surviving are a daughter, Rita Wampler Pressley, Clintwood; three sons, Ronald Lee Wampler Sr., Danny C. Wampler and David G. Wampler, all of Clintwood; seven grandchildren, Trena Wampler Dye, Ronald Lee Wampler Jr., Shonia Wampler Smith, Kathy Pressley Jaskiewicz, Melissa Pressley Hagy, Lona Pressley Kind and Travis Wampler; 13 great-grandchildren, Brian Dye, Allyson Dye, Selina Wampler, Sylvia Wampler, John Wampler, Vincent Agnew, Trista Burke, Brandon Burke, Laken Hagy, Ryan Hagy, Eric Heckford and Steven King; and seven step-great- grandchildren, C.D. Smith, Levi Smith, P.J. King, Criss King, Sara Jaskiewicz and Daniel Jaskiewicz. Funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 22, 2003, from the Clintwood Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Allen Bonnell officiating. Burial will follow in the Phipps Memorial Cemetery, Clintwood. A song service will be conducted Friday evening at 6 p.m. with visitation to follow. Clintwood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Patricia Frye Wolf WEST LAKE, La. -- Mrs. Patricia Frye Wolf, 49, died Thursday, March 20, 2003, at her home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Lee Wolf Sr.; grandparents, David and Glaydes Eastridge and William and Hazel Frye. She was a native of Saltville, a graduate of Rich Valley High School and an honor graduate of Ferrum College. Survivors: son, Richard Wolf Jr., West Lake; daughter, Robin Sacksteder, Fort Riley, Kan.; two granddaughters, Haley and Jada Sacksteder, Fort Riley; parents, David and Mary Eastridge Frye, West Lake; three sisters, Anita McNiel and Mary Ann Hazlet, West Lake, and Karen Tibouduex, Henderson, Texas; two brothers, David Frye Jr., Henderson, and Mark Frye, West Lake; seven nieces; and seven nephews.
