McKenna PINEY FLATS -- Lawrence A. McKenna Sr., 72, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 29, 2003, from Johnson City Medical Center. A son of the late William McKenna and Gertrude Sprunk McKenna, he was a native of Long Beach, N.Y. Mr. McKenna was a long time resident of Piscataway and Flemmington, N.J., before moving to Piney Flats in 1991. He graduated from Manhattan College in 1952 with a degree in chemistry. He worked in the Performance Plastics Division of Union Carbide, later Amoco Chemical Company, from 1957 until his retirement. While with Union Carbide he developed innovative techniques for molding plastics and patented several plastic blends, including the material used in most microwave cookware today. He led the research team which developed the plastic used in the face mask of Neil Armstrong's helmet for his historic walk on the moon in 1969. Mr. McKenna was a member of St. Dominic's Catholic Church in Kingsport. Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Imogene Lindamood McKenna; two daughters, Eileen Cress of Piney Flats and Kathryn Dietel of Cheyenne, Wyo.; three sons, Lawrence Jr. of Emmitsburg, Md., David of Blountville and Andrew of White House Station, N.J.; one brother, Vincent McKenna of Amityville, N.Y.; one sister, Eileen Sheridan of Coral Gables, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 o'clock Tuesday evening at St. Dominic's Catholic Church, 2517 N. John B. Dennis Highway, Kingsport, with a prayer service at the church following the visitation. A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for 11 o'clock Wednesday, April 2, at St. Dominic's Catholic Church with Rev. Charles Burton officiating. Interment will follow in Glenwood Cemetery, 839 Bluff City Highway, Bristol, Tenn. Pallbearers will be selected from friends and family. Weaver Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Ralph Osborne DORAN, Va. -- Mr. Ralph (Buster) Osborne, 70, passed away Monday, March 31, 2003, at his home following a brief illness. Born in Russell County, Va.,. he was the son of Mrs. Rhoda Crouse Osborne of Richlands and the late Greely Osborne. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War and at the time of his death was employed by Kelly Morton Kidd Tire Service in Richlands. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas H. Osborne and Mr. and Mrs. Glen Crouse; and one brother, Clifford Wayne Osborne Sr. In addition to his mother, Mr. Osborne is survived by his wife of 46 years, Mrs. Frances Cordle Osborne; one daughter, Mrs. Carolyn Osborne Harrison and husband Richard of Richlands; one brother, Rev. Robert (Bob) Osborne and wife Kathy of Richlands; and two sisters, Mrs. Linda Osborne Boyd of Knoxville and Mrs. Jean Osborne Lester and husband Joe of Cedar Bluff. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, 2003, in the Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Carl Robinson officiating. Smith, 64, of Bristol Virginia, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 30, 2003, at Wellmont Bristol Regional Hospital. He was born June 25, 1938, in Dickenson County, Va., and was the son of the late Bill and Pearl Smith. Mr. Smith moved to Bristol in 1965. Always ambitious and hardworking, he purchased his first Exxon Service Station in 1968. He remained in business as owner of Interstate and Appalachian Exxon for the next 26 years. His many employees and customers soon became his friends. Preceding Mr. Smith in death were his parents, Bill and Pearl Smith; and his sister, Mrs. Sue Geiger. He was a good and loving husband, father, grandfather and brother and will be missed by all who knew him. Survivors include his wife and friend of 46 years, Betty Burke Smith; daughters: Margaret Bamman and daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Don Green II; two grandchildren, Kim and Clinas Bamman and their father, Dean Bamman, all of Bristol Virginia; and sisters and brothers-in-law: Mae and Tom MaChesky of Bristol Virginia; Ruby and Warren Dishman of Dante, Va.; Ethel Yates of Norton; and Selma (Sam) and J.R. Hall of Bristol Tennessee. Also surviving are many other sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews; a host of friends; and one special little friend, FiFi. Sallie Abel VanDyke LEBANON -- Sallie Abel VanDyke, 90, died Sunday, March 30, 2003, at a Tazewell hospital. She was born at Asberrys, Va., and was a daughter of the late Robert F. and Nannie Belle Hilt Abel. Mrs. VanDyke had made her home in Lebanon for the past 34 years and at Richlands before that. She was retired from Mattie Williams Hospital where she was the nursing supervisor of the operating room. She was a member of the Lebanon Memorial United Methodist Church, Lebanon. She was the widow of William Russell VanDyke. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by six sisters and one brother. Survivors include: sisters, Ms. Mary E. Able of Tannersville, Va., and Mrs. Nell A. Monk of Tazewell; brother, Mr. Robert F. Abel Jr. of Tannesrville; three nieces; and three nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, April 1, 2003, at 7:30 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Tazewell with Rev. Michael Carter officiating. Interment will be Wednesday, April 2, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Greenhills Memory Gardens, Claypool Hill, Va. Pallbearers will be John Michael Monk, Lewis Edwin Monk, A.L. Dungan, Charles Lynn Vanhoozier, Sam VanDyke and Tommy VanDyke.
