She was born in Bristol Virginia and was a pharmacy technician with Walgreen's in Johnson City. She was a member of the Women's Glow and Southside Freewill Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her mother, Elva Graham Pruitt; and a sister, Kathy M. Trombley. Survivors include her husband of 14 years, Jim Birchfield of Elizabethton; one stepson, Travis Birchfield of Elizabethton; her father and stepmother, Howard L. Pruitt and Rosa Pruitt of Bristol Tennessee; seven sisters, Betty Howington of Knoxville, Evelyn Weeks of Bristol Tennessee, Cheryl Pruitt of Brunswick, Ga., Connie Swadley of Bristol Tennessee, Lori Pruitt of Brunswick, Christine Carter of Greenville, S.C., and Carol Smith of Coeburn; four brothers, Howard L. "Butch" Pruitt Jr. of Piney Flats and Ronald Pruitt of Citrus Springs, Fla., Jackie Pruitt of Bristol Virginia, and Gary Pruitt of Valdese, N.C.; several nieces and nephews; and three devoted and loving pets, Shadrack, Moses and Sierra. The committal service and entombment will be at 1 o'clock Saturday afternoon in the Chapel of Peace at Happy Valley Memorial Park in Elizabethton with Rev. Paul Humphrey officiating. Carrie Lee Boyd RUSSELL COUNTY -- Mrs. Carrie Lee Boyd, 97, lifelong resident of Russell County, passed away Friday, April 11, 2003, in a Lebanon hospital. Born July 9, 1905, in Russell County, she was a daughter of the late Henry Edward and Emmaline Speenor Jackson. She lived with her son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Shirley Boyd, for four years before entering a nursing home five years ago. She was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church in Honaker for 60 years. She was a loving mother and grandmother. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Madison Otey Boyd; one son, M.O. Boyd Jr.; one daughter, Mildred Earley; three sisters, Ethel Ball, Elizabeth Jackson and Lucille Jackson; eight brothers, Arthur Jackson, Luther Jackson, Marvin Jackson, Cowan Jackson, Carl Jackson, Claude Jackson, Carson Jackson and Eugene Jackson; and three grandchildren. Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law: John L. and Virginia Boyd of Maggie Valley, N.C.; Donald and Shirley Boyd of Cedar Bluff; and Leon and Shirley Boyd of Kingsport; daughter-in-law, Marie Boyd of Honaker; one brother, Donald Jackson of Lebanon; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren also survive. He enjoyed bluegrass music and working with his game chickens. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Narcie Viars PILGRIM KNOB -- Mrs. Narcie Viars, 95, passed away Thursday, April 10, 2003, in a Buchanan County hospital following a long illness. Born in Dwight, Va., she was the daughter of the late R.P. Rual and Nancy Catherine McKinney Mullins. She was a member of the Hale Creek Primitive Baptist Church. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Viars; eight brothers, Edmon Mullins, Alva Mullins, Elihu Mullins, Jay Mullins, Levi Mullins, Vennie Mullins, R.P. Mullins Jr. and Macado Mullins; four sisters, Nancy Mullins, Ellen Mullins, Macie Shropshire and Edith Cook; two grandchildren; and one great- grandchild. She is survived by two daughters: Freedis Jones of Baton Rouge, La.; and Charlotte Ruth Horn of Vansant, Va.; two sons: Cecil Viars of Pilgrim Knob, Va.; and Ralph Viars of Steelsburg, Va.; two sisters: Watie Goins of West Palm Beach, Fla.; and Rosaline Brown of Oceana, W.Va.; 15 grandchildren; 11 great- grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, April 13, 2003, at 1 p.m. at Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel at Keen Mountain, Va., with Elder Ezra Davis Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the Compton Cemetery at Compton Mountain. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
