She was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Atkins; five brothers; and three sisters. She was employed by Harwood Manufacturing Company and Supreme Mills for several years. Mrs. Atkins attended Rowland Creek Church of the Brethren. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and John Tidwell of Springfield, Va.; one granddaughter, Courtney Tidwell of Springfield; one sister, Charlotte Blevins of Fairfax; and numerous nieces and nephews. Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Henry Evans and Sarah Elizabeth Mitchell Boyd. She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, a member of Vansant Baptist Church and a former school teacher for the Buchanan County school system. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a friend to all who knew her. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Mrs. Yates was preceded in death by her husband, Frenchman M. Yates, Aug. 31, 1998. She is survived by four daughters: Callie Christine and husband James Arron White, Oakwood, Va.; Hattie Prater, Grundy; Roxie Carlene and husband Roger Sain, Mocksville, N.C.; and Rebal Evelyn and husband Frank Keen, Grundy; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Jennings (Mule) Yates, Nov. 4, 1999; and one brother, George Washington Boyd. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, April 18, 2003, at 1 p.m. at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Frank Newsome and others officiating, with burial to follow in the Richard and Nancy Boyd Coleman Cemetery on Sunset Hollow near Prater, Va. Friends may call at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel Wednesday afternoon at 5 p.m. with services Thursday evening at 7 p.m. Active pallbearers: grandsons and friends.
