Jones JOHNSON CITY - Kathryn Paxton Jones, 91, 806 Hillrise Blvd., died Thursday, April 17,. 2003, at the Johnson City Medical Center. Mrs. Jones was a Defiance, Ohio, native who had lived most of her life in Johnson City. She was a daughter of the late John Fred and Bessie Drain Paxton. Mrs. Jones was a graduate of the Ohio State University. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Jones was a member of Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church. For many years, she wrote a regular column on birds for the Johnson City Press. She was also a member of the Lee Herndon Chapter of the Tennessee Ornithological Society. Mrs. Jones was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Monday Club, the American Penwomen and the Dilettantes Book Club. She was the long time chairwoman for the Johnson City Mayne Williams Public Library. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by her husband, Carl A. Va. -- Miss Eunice Lasala, 47, formerly of Richlands, passed away Friday, April 11, 2003, in Florida following a scuba diving accident. Born in the Philippines, she was the daughter of Estela F. Lasala of Orange, Calif., and the late Vivencio Lasala. She graduate from Silliman University in the Philippines with a degree in nursing. She received her master's degree in nursing from the University of Virginia. Eunice was a certified critical care nurse and a certified ACLS instructor. She was nurse manager of the ICU CCU at Clinch Valley Medical Center in Richlands for several years. She was on the ICU staff of Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg and also served as coordinator of education programs for Mary Washington Hospital. Eunice was a member of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses and served as president of the Greater Fredericksburg Association Chapter. Eunice had served as a medical missionary in Africa and was interested in Uganda Children's Mission Program. She was very active in fund raising for charitable organizations. Eunice was a member of Gethsemane Baptist Church and was to receive the most outstanding Silliman Graduate Award for 2003 which will be awarded posthumously. She had a varied and active lifestyle that included hiking, mountain climbing, scuba diving and many other activities. In addition to her mother, she is survived by three sisters, Louella Motos and husband Dr. Ramon Motos of Pounding Mill, Va., Roxane Lasala of Orange, Calif., and Sharyn Fajardo and husband Patricio of Corona, Calif.; one brother, Dr. Edsel Lasala and wife Beam of La Carlota, Philippines; and several nieces and nephews also survive. He had made his home in Wendell the past 18 years and was a truck driver and explosives expert for Johnny Precast and Explosives in Garner, N.C. He was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Cleo Richardson and Mildred Kizer; and one brother, Roger Street. He was a lifelong resident of Dickenson County, a disabled coal miner, a graduate of Haysi High School and was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Floyd F. and Phoeba Turner; and his maternal grandparents, Theodore and Betty Keith.
