Temperance Culley ABINGDON -- Mrs. Temperence Colley Culley , 101, a resident of Grace Healthcare, 600 Walden Raod, Abingdon, died Sunday, April 20, 2003, in the Johnston Memorial Hospital. She was a native of Wshington County, Va., and had lived in Long Island, N.Y., for 42 years before moving back to Abingdon in 1970. She was the daughter of the late Chris Morrell and Nora Lowry Campbell Colley. She was the widow of William Frederick Culley. Mrs. Culley was a member of the Abingdon Baptist Church. Survivors include several nieces, nephews and cousins. Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m.Tuesday, April 22, 2003, in the Washington Chapel Cemetery with Rev. Russell Cole officiating. Evans PRINCETON, W.Va. -- Mrs. Margaret Newland Evans of the Havens died Saturday, April 19, 2003, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Roanoke, Va. Born in Sullivan County, Tenn., she was the daughter of the late Doyal M. and Alma Rutherford Newland. Mrs. Evans had a B.A. degree from Radford State Teachers College and an M.A. degree from West Virginia University. She retired after 32 years of service with the Mercer County Public School System. She was a principal at Fairview Elementary School and later at Memorial Elementary School. Mrs. Evans was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Evening Primrose Garden Club, Alpha Delta Kappa Society, National Retired Teachers Association and the Lioness Organization. She was an avid gardener and Bridge player. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Karl E. Evans. Survivors include one daughter, Phyllis Briscoe and husband Robert of Abingdon; three grandchildren, Robert O. Briscoe Jr. and wife Jean of Montreat, N.C., Laurie Ann Hale and husband Alan of Christiansburg, Va., and Lisa Lynn Miller and husband Thomas of Riner, Va.; and seven great-grandchildren. Doug Hardwick ABINGDON -- Doug Hardwick, 78, a resident of 820 Hillman Highway, died Sunday, April 20, 2003, at his residence. He was born in Welch, W.Va., and spent most of his life in Abingdon. He was the son of the late William Henry and Mary Belle Counts Hardwick. Mr. Hardwick was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of High Point Baptist Church. He was a retired carpenter and brick mason as well as a dealer of antiques. He was a member of the Abingdon Volunteer Fire Department where he retired with 30 years of service and served as captain. He was a member of the American Legion Post 12. Survivors include his wife, Christine B. Hardwick of Abingdon; one daughter, Jackie Stevenson of Abingdon; two grandchildren, Erik and Niki Stevenson of Abingdon; one sister, Mildred H. Dye of Abingdon; an aunt, Dorothy King of Abingdon; a sister-in-law, Mary Hardwick of Abingdon; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Hardwick also leaves behind a host of friends. Clyde Ellis Lester HICKORY, N.C. -- Mr. Clyde Ellis Lester, 60, passed away Saturday, April 19, 2003, at his home. Born March 5, 1943, in Buchanan County, Va., he was a son of the late Walter and Rosa Tiller Lester. He had spent his early life in the Honaker area before moving to Florida where he lived for 12 years. He had lived in Hickory for the past three years and attended Sandy Ridge Baptist Church in Hickory. He was employed as a roofer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Martha Farmer, and one brother, James William Lester. Survivors include his wife, Ruth Joy Lester of the home; two daughters, Sandra Perkins of Honaker and Denise Cartwright of Hickory; one stepson, Kevin Lambert of Jordan, Minn.; two sisters, Irene Fitzgerald and Hattie Miller, both of Honaker; two brothers, Earnie Lester and Russell Lester, both of Honaker; five grandchildren; and one step-grandchild also survive. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. Kyle Ratliff and Rev. Giles Wilson officiating. Warren Matney GRUNDY -- Warren "Pete" Matney, 78 years of age, passed away Saturday, April 19, 2003, at his home following an extended illness. Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late John W. and Lydia Deskins Matney. He was a life-long resident of the Grundy area and was a member of Buchanan First Presbyterian Church. Mr. Matney was a retired heavy equipment operator and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He enjoyed working in his garden, coin collecting and spending time with his family and friends. Pete greeted everyone with a smile and joke. Mr. Matney is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mrs. Anna Lee Benfield Matney, Grundy; two sons, Jeffrey W. and wife Cynthia Matney, Vansant, Va., and Robert P. and wife Susan Matney, Raleigh, N.C.; two granddaughters, Stephanie Matney, Richmond and Meredith Matney, Vansant; three sisters, Marjorie Stiltner, Roanoke, Daisy Matney, Springfield, Va., and Josephine Matney, Springfield; and two brothers, E.H. "Doc" Matney, Bristol Tennessee, and John Matney, Springlake Heights, N.J. He was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Heather Dawn Matney; two sisters, Rachel Baker and Louise Matney; and two brothers, Eugene H. Matney and Stewart J. Matney.
