Barrett, 76, of 11380 Rocky Hill Road, Bristol, Va., went to be with the Lord April 22, 2003, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. Mr. Barrett was born Nov. 8, 1926, in Albuquerque, N.M., and grew up in the Blountville and Bristol area. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, a retired self-employed painter, a member of the Benhams Baptist Church where he served as deacon and Sunday School teacher for several years. He had also pastored the Willow Branch Baptist Church and had preached over 30 years at the Haven of Rest. Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Evelyn McReynolds Barrett; his children, Jeff Barrett and wife Jennifer, Debbie Sproles and husband Lloyd, Harold Barrett and wife Patty, and Anthony Barrett; grandchildren, Michael Sproles, Kevin Sproles, Josh Barrett, Dean Barrett, Daniel Barrett, Maggie Barrett, Dustin Barrett, Christin Barrett and Amanda Barrett; great- grandchildren, Ethan Sproles and Chloe Sproles; sisters, Dora Reed, Beulah Lundy, Berdie Leonard, Mae Howard, Hyleigh Hensley, Ruby Fleenor; brother, Tom Barrett, Frank Barrett and Bill Barrett; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, April 25, 2003, in the Benhams Baptist Church with Pastor Jeff Keene, Dr. Charles Sherfey, Pastor Dennis Burnette and Rex Mallory. Caudill ABINGDON -- Mrs. Opal "Eilleene" Dean Caudill, 77, went to be with the Lord on April 22, 2003, at the home of her daughter, Rita Caudill Rutledge and son- in-law, Richard Rutledge in Front Royal, Va. Eilleene was born Dec. 9, 1925, in McDowell County, W.Va., to the late Samuel Isaiah Dean and Sadie Ethel Lambert. She was the widow of Silvon Caudill. She was also preceded in death by her grandparents, Henry "Floyd" Lambert and Mary Jane Hamilton Lambert and William Harrison Dean and Mary "Ellen" Graham Dean; one son, Silvon "Dean" Caudill; a sister, Kathleen Dean Collins; and brothers, Paul Dean and Harold Dean. Eilleene and her family moved to the Wyndale Community in 1956 from McDowell County, W.Va. She was a member of the Wyndale United Methodist Church. Eilleene was loved by all that knew her and she will be dearly missed. Survivors include her children, Rita Caudill Rutledge and husband Noah "Richard" Rutledge of Front Royal; daughter-in-law, Annette Sexton Caudill of Bristol Tennessee; sons, Samuel "Buster" Caudill and Kenneth "Kenney" Caudill and wife Betty, all of Abingdon; brothers, Boyd Dean of Carthage, N.C. and Loyd Dean of Florien, La.; sister, Joyce Dean Ross of Hoschton, Ga.; eight grandchildren, Wendy Rutledge and Melanie Rutledge West of Front Royal, Laura Caudill Barker, Kevin Caudill and Travis Caudill, all of Abingdon, Christopher Caudill I of Bristol Tennessee, Brandy Caudill of Jacksonville, Fla., and Lisa Caudill Gilland of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.; 11 great-grandchildren, Colton Rutledge, Carissa Rutledge, Ryan Rutledge-Ray and Avery West, all of Front Royal, Whitley Caudill and Peyton Caudill of Abingdon, Christopher Caudill II of Bristol Tennessee, Walter James McBride of Montana, and Tiffany and Brian Gilland of Rancho Cucamonga; and one aunt, Thelma Lambert Bishop of Falls Mills, Va. A native of Shounds, Tenn., who had lived in the Johnson City area for the last forty years. She was a daughter of the late Charles "Coy" McCoy and Lizzie L. Bumgardner Wilson and the widow of Charles R. Haworth since 1997. She was a retired homemaker and a member of the First Presbyterian Church. Warren Matney GRUNDY -- Warren "Pete" Matney, 78 years of age, passed away Saturday, April 19, 2003, at his home following an extended illness. Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late John W. and Lydia Deskins Matney. He was a life-long resident of the Grundy area and was a member of Buchanan First Presbyterian Church. Mr. Matney was a retired heavy equipment operator and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He enjoyed working in his garden, coin collecting and spending time with his family and friends. Miller GATE CITY -- J.C. "Rip" Miller, 82, entered into rest Monday, April 21, 2003, at Wellmont Hospice House, Bristol Tennessee. He was born in Maryville, Tenn., May 30, 1920, to the late William David and Clara Anderson Miller. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters. Mr. Miller was a teacher, principal, coach and administrator for 35 years. He was a member of Community Fellowship Baptist Church in Gate City. Rip had many friends throughout the area. He loved to laugh and joke. He also had a love of athletics, tennis, volleyball, football and also farming. He shared vegetables from his garden with dozens of friends. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Meade Miller, Gate City; three daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Miller Vass, Lexington, Ky., Jane and Curtis Spriggs, Bristol Virginia, and Susan and Brad Fitzgerald, Roanoke; two sons and daughter- in-law, Johnny and Debbie Miller, Gate City and David Miller, Richmond; sister, Beulah Mae Orr, Atlanta; special sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Betty and Jim Thorton, Gate City; grandchildren, Sarah and Katie Vass, Alison and Andrew Miller and John and William Fitzgerald; and several nieces and nephews. He was a World War II Purple Heart veteran and retired from service at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bordy and Ella Wheeler Poole; four brothers, John, Ernest, Bordy Jr. and Ward Poole; and two sisters, Susie Peak and Josephine Richardson. While serving in the U.S. Army he received the United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, Purple Heart and two Bronze Stars.
