Lockhart VANSANT, Va. -- Ollie Burton Lockhart, 65 years of age of the Big Fox area, passed away Wednesday, April 23, 2003, at Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy, following an extended illness. Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Abe and Mary Osborne Lockhart and was a member of the Methodist Church. He was a lumberman for several years. A lifelong resident of the Buchanan County area, she was a member of the Faith in Christ Free Will Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Garland Lowe; one sister, Lovis Whitt; and one brother, Gilmer Johnson. "Coach" Vicars, 67, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday morning, April 23, 2003, after a lifetime of service to his church and community. Born in Nickelsville, he was the son of Mauriece and Dwight Vicars. John graduated from Milligan College with a B.S. degree in 1958 and received a master's degree in administration from ETSU in 1976. He and his wife, Judy, made their home in Gate City. He was preceded in death by his father, Dwight; maternal grandmother, Maunie Quillen; paternal grandmother, Maude Vicars Broadwater; uncle, Ferris Quillen; and aunt, Leora Hilton. Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two daughters, Rebecca Lawson and husband Mike of Fort Blackmore and Gayle Ervin and husband Greg of Weber City; son, John Daniel Vicars of Gate City; and grandchildren include Brandon Lawson, Justin Lawson and Luke, Laurie Beth and Zac Ervin. He is also survived by his mother, Mariece Vicars of Abingdon; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Virginia and Donald Helvie of Walton, Ind.; and several cousins. "Big" John was a beloved former teacher and coach at Gate City High School where he served 25 years. The legendary coach accumulated numerous awards while coaching both basketball and football. He served Scott County Schools as an elementary school principal at Rye Cove and Fort Blackmore. He was a life member of both National Coaches Association and the Virginia High School Coaches Association. Coach Vicars was inducted into the Milligan College Athletic Hall of Fame for his outstanding career achievements. Even after retirement, he continued to develop the athletic programs he helped to build. He led Gate City Middle School boys and girls basketball program for eight years. This past season, Vicars coached the third and fourth graders in Upward Basketball. He was a loyal fan of both Gate City and Twin Springs where his grandsons played. John was a faithful member who served as both deacon and trustee of the First Baptist Church of Gate City. John served as a member of the Harvest Child Care Ministry Board of Directors. An avid sports reader, he was also a member of Scott County Friends of the Library. He was known for his gentle nature, his integrity, his wit and his love for children. In addition to all his awards and honors, Coach Vicars will be best remembered for his ability to make everyone whose life he touched know they are important. Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Friday evening, April 25, at the First Baptist Church of Gate City. Following visitation, services will be conducted at the church by Rev. Roc Collins and Rev. Jeff DeBoard. Graveside services will be held Saturday, April 26, at 11 a.m. at the Nickelsville Cemetery.
