She graduated from Marion Senior High School where she was very active in girls' athletics, hitting the first home run ever for the girls' softball team. Lisa will be sadly missed by all of her friends and family, who loved her dearly. Connett ABINGDON -- Mr. Robert Paul Connett, age 85, died at his home on Tuesday, June 3, 2003. He was born on Aug. 3, 1917, to the late Bessie Salisbury Connett and Myron Connett of Wymore, Neb. He is survived by his family members including his wife, Janice Brugh Connett; son, Dr. Richard James Connett of Rochester, N.Y., and his daughters, Denise Eleanor of San Francisco and Elise Marie of Brooklyn, N.Y.; son, Charles Robert Connett and wife, Sheila Imelda Ostrom and their daughters, Nicole Marie, Kimberly Catherine and Diana Gail, all of Noblesville, Ind.; daughter, Catherine Ann Connett of St. Paul, Minn.; a sister, Esther Marie Woodward of San Jose, Calif.; and a brother, Dean Morphet Connett and wife Vera Mae Belt of Lincoln, Neb. Mr. Connett graduated in 1946 from the Rolla School of Mines with a B.S. degree in mining engineering. He was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II, having served with the Army Corps of Engineers in Africa, in the invasion of southern France and in the invasion of southern Germany. He retired from the U. S. Army in 1953 with the rank of major. Mr. Connett worked for the U. S. Gypsum Company from 1949 until his retirement in 1983 but he continued to serve as a consultant on mining issues. He and his wife moved extensively with USG including stops in Tawas City, Mich., in Windsor, Nova Scotia Canada, in Kingston, Jamaica, of the British West Indies where he built a new quarry and plant, and in Plasterco, Va., where he was plant manager for 23 years. During his tenure there he also opened a second mine. He and his wife retired to Abingdon in 1983. He was very active in the United Methodist Church, Kiwanis Club, Washington County Chamber of Commerce, Washington County Historical Society, Virginia Manufacturer's Association and the Virginia Safety Association. He served Washington County in many ways including serving as chairman of the Washington County Existing Industry Committee for the Virginia Community Certification Program, as a member of the Washington County Zoning Committee, as chairman of the County Board of Zoning Appeals, as a member of the Abingdon Zoning Appeals Board and as a board member and Executive Committee member at Johnston Memorial Hospital. He was also a member of the Sons of the American Revolution. His retirement hobby was working on the computer and more importantly on family genealogies. He had helped many in the community as well as extended family and friends search their family ties. He and his wife traveled in many foreign countries taking photographs to share and gathering historical materials. They visited all 50 states and all of the provinces of Canada. He and his wife enjoyed 61-plus years of marriage and felt blessed by God all along the way. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Eckerson BRISTOL, Va. -- Susan Henderson Eckerson, age 92, One Liberty Place, died Wednesday, June 4, 2003, at Wellmont Hospice House, Bristol Tennessee, following an extended illness. She was born in Caroline County, Va., on June 24, 1910, the daughter of John Urial and Alice Penn Davis Henderson. She lived in Troy, N.C., for 50 years, where she was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Dr. Charles N. Eckerson, in 1987. Mrs. Eckerson then returned to Virginia and lived in Bowling Green for five years before moving to Bristol Virginia in 1992. Survivors include her daughter, Anne E. Corley of Bristol Virginia; her son, Charles Eckerson and his wife Marsha of Pueblo West, Colo.; five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law; a brother-in-law; several nephews and their families; a niece; and several cousins. Donald Powers CHILHOWIE, Va. -- Donald Powers, 90, passed away on Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at the Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion. He was born in Helton Township, Ashe County, N.C., on Jan. 23, 1913, to the late John and Emma Ball Powers and lived there in his youth. Mr. Powers then lived in Tazewell County, Va., and worked as a coal miner before serving his country in combat during World War II in the U.S. Army. Soon after, he settled in Chilhowie where he enjoyed the last 61 years of his life. He was a skilled carpenter. He operated the Chilhowie Shell Station for a number of years and was a used-car dealer. Mr. Powers was a member of both the Chilhowie Masonic Lodge F & AM 250 and the Frances Marion VFW Post 4667. In addition to his parents, Mr. Powers was preceded in death by three brothers, Scott, Dean and George Powers; one sister, Nettie Hodge; and two brothers-in-law, Raymond and Elmer "E. B." Little. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Ray Perrigan Sr. and a daughter, Mary Lynn Rockwell. Survivors include her husband, Paul Slate of Abingdon Manor in Abingdon; a son and daughter-in-law, Ray Jr. and Lois Perrigan, of Bristol Tennessee; four granddaughters, including special "daughter/granddaughter" Kim Carrington of Springfield, Mo.; five grandsons; 14 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
