Mr. Arnold was a son of the late Robert and Leah Mumpower Arnold. He was preceded in death by his wife, Fannie Scott Arnold; three sisters; and four brothers. He was retired from Goodpasture Motors and was a member of Grace Baptist Church. Survivors include two sons: Jimmy Arnold and his wife, Gayle, of Johnson City, Tenn.; and Bill Arnold and his wife, Shirley, of Talbott, Tenn.; granddaughter, Andrea Santrock, of Knoxville, Tenn.; grandson, Jonathan Arnold and his wife, Kristen, of Maryville, Tenn.; two great-granddaughters; one great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews. Akard Funeral Home is serving the family of Mr. Arnold. John Charles Biegler TEQUESTA, Fla. -- John Charles Biegler, 81, of Jupiter Hills, died Saturday, June 7, 2003, at Jupiter Medical Center. Born in Chicago, he was the son of the late John C. Biegler and Mary Watson. He was a graduate of the University of Illinois, receiving his bachelor of science degree in accounting. He was a certified public accountant for his entire working life. During World War II, he served his country in the U.S. Army. Mr. Biegler had been a resident of the Tequesta area for the past 20 years, coming from New Canaan, Conn. Surviving are his wife, Carol Newman Biegler; son, James Biegler of Richardson, Texas; sister, Wilnetta Fisher of Santa Rosa, Calif.; and stepdaughter, Susan Craig of Grand Cayman. Blackburn DAMASCUS, Va. -- Robert Allen "Giggs" Blackburn, age 55, passed away on Sunday, June 8, 2003, at his home. He was a lifelong resident of Damascus and was the son of Mildred Blackburn of Damascus, and the late Paul Blackburn Sr. He was a painter and a member of the First Baptist Church. Giggs was well-loved throughout the community and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Caldwell BRISTOL, Tenn. -- Mr. David J. Caldwell, of 1 Liberty Place, Bristol, Va., died Saturday, June 7, 2003, in NHC, Bristol Tennessee. Mr. Caldwell was born Jan. 28, 1912, in High Point, N.C., son of a Presbyterian minister and great-great-grandson of the Rev. Dr. David Caldwell (1725-1824) Revolutionary War patriot, educator, physician and Presbyterian minister. He was the 13th generation of Presbyterian ministers. He was an honor graduate of Davidson College in physics and electrical engineering with post-graduate study in mechanical engineering and accounting. He was a physics teacher and accountant prior to his six years as U. S. Army officer in World War II. In 1946 he co-founded Bivins & Caldwell, Inc., headquartered in High Point, N. C., which became the largest firm in the southern United States specializing in electronic engineering and measurements. In 1960, this firm was acquired by Hewlett- Packard. He remained with Hewlett-Packard until retirement in 1976 as southern region manager and consultant. He was a senior member of IEEE (Institute of Electrical & Electronic Engineers) and a member of several corporate boards. Ordered on active duty in the U. S. Army as a second Lieutenant in 1940, he left active service as a lieutenant colonel in 1946. He had three years of foreign service including 18 months in South America and 18 months in Europe. In 1943, he was given top-secret clearance, ordered to the Pentagon along with 12 other recent graduates of Army Command and General Staff School and was assigned to War Department for special duty and training with respect to planned invasion of Continental Europe. In December 1943, he was ordered to London, England, for further duty involving planning for D-Day. He became an assistant G-3 of VIII Corps during the invasion of Normandy, continuing through the campaigns in France, Belgium, Germany and Czechoslovakia, earning eight battle stars. He was twice awarded the Bronze Star medal, the Croix de Guerre and Legion of Merit. He was an active amateur radio operator since 1928 with the call letters W4SL. He was a member of the choir and elder emeritus of the First Presbyterian Church. His hobbies were working on clocks and playing golf. He was preceded in death by one sister, Inez Coggins. Survivors include his wife, Frances Frazier Caldwell, Bristol Virginia; brother- in-law and sister-in-law, Fred and LaVerne Frazier, Bristol Tennessee; two nephews, John Coggins, Greensboro, N.C., and George Coggins, Lexington, N.C.; one niece, Gertrude Coggins; and a number of great-nephews and great-nieces. Funeral services for Mr. David J. Caldwell will be conducted 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 10, 2003, in the sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Gordon Turnbull officiating. She was born in Tazewell County and was the daughter of the late Marion Columbus and Laura Bell Gross Beavers, both Tazewell County natives. She had made her home in the Baptist Valley area all of her life and was of the Holiness faith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clinton Thomas Sparks; two sons, Dennis Woodrow Sparks and wife, Betty, and Gary Wayne Sparks and wife, Shirley; three sisters, Pearl Beavers, Pauline Altizer, and Mary Clemmons; two brothers, Lars Beavers and Paul Beavers; and one sister-in- law, Virginia Johnson Beavers.
