She was born Jan. 15, 1937, in Smyth County, Va., one of 13 children to the late Robert and Mary Ellen Wyatt. She was a member of Riverview Presbyterian Church, North Holston, Va., until she moved to her membership to Asbury United Methodist Church in Greeneville. She was a graduate of Rich Valley High School and family and friends knew her as "Liz," a fun-loving person who deeply loved her husband and son. Elmer Fletcher Sr. KINGSPORT -- Elmer Eugene "Gene" Fletcher Sr., age 56, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family at 6:09 p.m. Monday, June 9, 2003, at his residence following a brief illness. Born in Richlands, Va., on May 14, 1947, he was a son of Elmer Fletcher of Kingsport and the late Gladys Castle Fletcher. He has resided in this area for the past 10 years moving from Riverdale, Md. Mr. Fletcher worked for 26 years for George Hyman Construction Company. He also worked at Powell Construction Company in Johnson City, Tenn. He was a member of the Operating Engineers Local 77. Mr. Fletcher will be remembered as a loving husband, father and "papaw" who was a jack of all trades, could fix anything, loved to piddle and listen to the oldies and was the hand that never said no. Wampler WISE, Va. -- Sarah Catherine Holyfield Wampler, 84, passed away Tuesday, June 10, 2003, in the St. Mary's Hospital Norton, Va. She joined the Wise Baptist Church in 1934, and in 1935 began teaching a Sunday School class at age 16. Through the years she was youth leader of every youth organization of the Women's Missionary Union, including the Sunbeam Band, G.A.s, R.A.s and the Y.W.A.s. She has served as president of the Women's Missionary Society. She graduated from the Women's Missionary Union Training School at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., in 1945. After graduation, she served as director of the Stony Lonesome Goodwill Center in Norton. For six years she carried on a mission program at the center, Dixiana Mining Camp, the Guest River Mission, which today is Guest River Baptist Church, and Hawthorne Mission Center. She was employed by the Mine Safety and Health Administration for 27 years and retired in 1982. Mrs. Wampler was a member of the Hurricane Baptist Church since 1964, where she has served as teacher, treasurer and is currently serving as pianist. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard J. Wampler; her parents, Charles Henry Holyfield and Listy McLemore Holyfield; two brothers, Randolph and Winfred Holyfield; a sister, Annie Holyfield Gardner; and a niece, Holli Gardner Mears. Surviving are special care givers, Lowell and Francis Holyfield; nephews, Charles Holyfield and Eddie Gardner; great-nephews, Kevin, Timothy and Scott Holyfield; and a great-niece, Listy Mears. He was a lifelong resident of Washington County, Va., where he was born on Dec. 8, 1921, to the late Robert and Sarah Worley. He was retired from Flavorich Dairy with 46 years of service. Mr. Worley was a member of the Clear Branch Baptist Church, and was preceded in death by his son, Arnold Worley, and by one grandson, Mike Wise. Mr. Worley is survived by his wife of 62 years, Nevada "Tater" Worley; three sons and daughters-in-law: James Worley and wife Carolyn; Bobby Worley and wife Judy; and Gary Worley and wife Nancy; three daughters and sons-in-law: Susie Wise and husband Raymond; Rita Lunsford and husband Butch; and Maxine Worley; one sister, Thelma Ragsdale, of Danville, Va.; eight grandchildren; three great- grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be held Wednesday, June 10, 2003, at 8:00 p.m. in the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Walter Statzer officiating. Graveside service will be held Thursday at 3:00 p.m. from the Forest Hills Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6 until 7:45 p.m. in the Weaver Funeral Home.
