Alexander ABINGDON -- James H. "Jim" Alexander, age 69, died Saturday, June 14, 2003, at his residence. He was born Feb. 1, 1934, in Tazewell, to the late Jim and Gertrude Alexander. He was a member of the St. Thomas Episcopal Church. He was a 1952 graduate of Hargrave Military Academy and a 1956 graduate of Lynchburg College. He was past president of the Board of Trustees for Hargrave Military Academy and received the following honors: Distinguished Alumnus Achievement Award, 1991, Outstanding Alumnus Award, 1995, Outstanding Trustee of the Year, 1996, Trustee of the Decade, 2000. Mr. Alexander was very active in the community. He was a member and past president of the Kiwanis Club of Abingdon, where he served as chairman of the Plumb Alley Day. He was the recipient of the George Hixon Award and Kiwanian of the Year. He was an active board member for the William King Regional Arts Center. He was the chairman of the Mistletoe Market. He was president of the Washington County Historical Society. In 1994, Mr. Alexander retired as vice-president of sales for Cyprus Minerals, where he was responsible for all national and international sales for 27 years. Survivors include his wife, Lucy Alexander of Abingdon; two daughters, Mary Beth Alexander of Rehoboth Beach, Del., and Sarah Scott Rice and husband Paul of Berwyn, Pa.; and two grandchildren. Funeral services for James H. "Jim" Alexander will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 17, 2003, in the Campbell Funeral Home Chapel, with Father Craig R. Wylie officiating. Mr. Cannon was born May 31, 1929, in Smyth County, Va., to the late Clyde and Frances Henderson Cannon. He attended Chilhowie Christian Church. He was retired from the military, having served 22 years in the U.S. Army. Marion was an avid bowler, a member of the Saltville/Rich Valley Lions Club and the Saltville VFW. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Ann S. Cannon; and two brothers, Eugene Cannon and George Cannon. Loyd Ramey NEWARK, Ohio -- Mr. Loyd Ramey, 73, formerly of Coeburn, passed away Thursday, June 12, 2003, at the Licking Memorial Hospital, Newark. He was born at Dungannon,Va., moved from Virginia as a young man and lived most of his life in Ohio. He was retired from the U.S. Air Force as a civilian worker and had served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. Mr. Ramey was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and was of the Freewill Baptist faith. He was a son of the late James and Partha Stapleton Ramey and was also preceded in death by a sister, Nora Ramey Dooley. Survivors include his wife, Lillian D. She had lived in Konnarock, Va. most of her life and had lived in Damascus since 1989. She was the daughter of the late James Robert Shomate and Sarah Delana Corum Shomate. She was a member of the Damascus Senior Citizens, where she played the piano, and was a member of the St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Konnarock. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard L. Wyatt; and by a daughter, Sarah Wyatt Collier. She is survived by one daughter, Vicky Trent, of Troutdale, Va.; two sons, Tim Wyatt, of Konnarock and Roger Wyatt of Wise; 12 grandchildren; 21 great- grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and many friends.
