Burks TUCSON, Ariz. -- Jonathon James Burks, 54, formerly of Bristol Tennessee, passed away Saturday, June 14, at his home in Tucson. He was born in Glendale, Calif., to the late James Harold Burks and Elizabeth Lucille Burks. A loving father and friend, he was known for his interest in photography and practical jokes. He worked for Raytheon Missile Systems in Bristol and Tucson. Survivors include: his wife, Ginny Burks; two daughters, Shannon Taylor and Heidi Burks; one son, Andrew Burks; and two grandchildren, Robby and Oliver. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 21, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Woodlawn Baptist Church in Bristol Tennessee. Maude C. Hawkins SPRING HILL, Fla. -- Maude Couch Hawkins, age 82, passed away Wednesday, March 26, 2003, at Hernando-Pasco Hospice in Brooksville, Fla. She was born in Toms Creek, Va., and lived the major part of her life in Coeburn, moving to Spring Hill in 1988. While living in Coeburn, she was a member of the Coeburn Presbyterian Church, where she served as a Sunday School teacher, Bible school director, youth group director and choir director. After moving to Florida, she became a member of the Grace Presbyterian Church. She was the daughter of the late Jack and Lettie Couch of Coeburn. Maude was preceded in death by her husband, James E. Hawkins. She was bookkeeper and postmistress at Splash Dam Smokeless Coal Co. at Bartlick, Va. She served on Coeburn Town Council and was chairman of Coeburn planning commission. She was also president of Coeburn PTA for six years and received a life membership in the Virginia Congress of Parents and Teachers. She was a member of the Wise County Republican Party where she served as president of the Republican Women's Club. Maude served as treasurer of Wise County from 1980-1987 during which she received the Victor E. Martinelli Outstanding Treasurer of the United States from the National Treasurer's Association. She also received Treasurer of the Year in 1987 from the Region I Clerk Treasurer's Association as well as Outstanding Service Award from the Fine Arts Foundation Coeburn. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Jerry Cowling of Spring Hill; two brothers and sisters-in-law: Sidney and Betty Couch of Spring Hill; and Joel and Betty Couch of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; sister-in-law, Eloise Couch of Abingdon; two grandchildren, Joshua and Heather Cowling; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 26, 2003, at 3:00 p.m. at the Coeburn Presbyterian Church in Coeburn with the Rev. Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Grover and Martha Jane Owens. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. Ms. Jackson was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Lee Jackson; four brothers, Freeman Owens, Coodge Owens, Junior Owens and Dock Owens; and two sisters, Emma Sue Green, and Jean Owens. Cleman E. Justice OAKWOOD, Va. -- Cleman E. Justice, 78, passed away Thursday, in a Grundy hospital following a brief illness. Funeral arrangement are incomplete at Buchanan Funeral Service. Charles E. Lady Jr. BLOUNTVILLE -- Charles E. Lady Jr., age 82, died Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. Charles was the son of the late Beulah and Charles Lady Sr. He was a veteran of World War II where he served in the 104th Timberwolf Infantry Division in Holland and Germany for which he was awarded the Bronze Star. He was employed by Tennessee Eastman for 40 years in the yarn plant. Charles was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Blountville where he served as a trustee and usher and was a member of the Senior Men's Class. Mr. Lady is survived by his wife of 54½ years, Mary H. Lady; two sons: Gary E. Lady and his wife, Miriam, of Coco Beach, Fla.; and Mark A. Lady and his wife, Sandra, of Bristol; one sister and brother-in-law, Eloise and James L. Booher; and two grandchildren, Lindsay Noel Lady and Nelson Evans Lady. The funeral service will be conducted at 8:00 p.m., Friday, June 20, in First Baptist Church of Blountville with Rev. Clay Austin officiating. The committal service and interment will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday in Gunnings Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be conducted by Highlands Fellowship Veterans Honor Guard. Thelma Sue Maynard SEARCY, Ark. -- Thelma Sue Maynard, age 73, died Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at her home in Searcy with her family by her side. She was born June 12, 1930, in Russell County, Va., a daughter of the late John and Bertha Ray. Mrs. Maynard was a member of the College Church of Christ in Searcy. She is survived by one son, Larry Roland Maynard II of Park City, Utah; two daughters: Melinda Loveday of Blountville; and Rebecca Higginbotham of Searcy; two brothers: Raymond Ray of Akron, Ohio; and John R. Ray of Lebanon; two sisters: twin sister Elma Campbell of Piney Flats, Tenn.; and Mary Jane Vance of Bristol Tennessee; and five grandchildren, Larry Roland Maynard III, Jennifer Marie Maynard, Alana Lea Loveday, John Ryan Maynard Higginbotham and Alex Edward Higginbotham. Salyer LEBANON -- Evelyn Dorton Salyer, 81, died Thursday, June 19, 2003, in NHC in Bristol Virginia. Born Nov. 8, 1921, in Russell County, a daughter of the late Homer C. Dorton and Mattie Bausell Dorton, she was the widow of Hobert A. Salyer. She was a member of the Memorial Chapel Church in the Tumbez community. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Marilyn Salyer. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Dan Wampler, Abingdon; two sons and daughters-in-law: Randall and Melissa Salyer; and Gary and Lois Salyer, all of Lebanon; grandchildren: Richard and wife Valerie Salyer, Amy Salyer, Mandy and husband Jamie Hughes, Adam and wife Amanda Wampler, Nicole Wampler and Sarah Salyer; great grandchildren: Emily and Megan Salyer, Emma Wampler, and Nicholas Hughes; a sister, Lucille Browning, Lebanon; a brother and sister-in- law, Harold and Susie Dorton, Newport News; also several nieces and nephews. He was born in Russell County, Va., on April 9, 1944, and was the son of the late Kyle Worley and Sallie Powers Worley. He was of the Baptist faith. Surviving are sisters: Pam Bellamy and husband Harvey, Kay Worley and Barbara Worley, all of Hiltons, Va.; and Connie Smith and husband Steve, Church Hill, Tenn.; brother, Jimmy Worley and wife Lesa, Weber City; and several nieces and nephews.
