Blevins CHILHOWIE -- Luther Kenneth Blevins, 77, passed away Thursday, June 19, 2003, at the Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion. He was born in Carter County, Tenn., to the late William Elkanah Blevins and Tancy Barker Blevins Martin, and was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Betty Ruth Haga Blevins; and his stepfather, R.N. "Rob" Martin. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps having served in World War II as a tail gunner on B24's. He was the recipient of several medals of valor and was retired from Sprint Telephone Company. Survivors include: sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce and Monica Blevins, Chilhowie and Ken and Gail Blevins, Wilkesboro, N.C.; daughter and son-in-law, Sue and Scott Johnson, Gillett, Pa.; grandchildren, William Luther, Gavin Nathaniel and Megan Alyce Blevins and Anna Lee and Melanie Sue Johnson; one brother, Elder Eugene Blevins, Chilhowie; one sister, Mabel Martin, Chilhowie; one half sister, Hallie Martin, Chilhowie; three stepsisters, Aileen Russell, Marion, Fern Haga, Galva, Ill., and Elsie Anderson, Altona, Ill.; also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins. Carico Tallahassee, Fla. -- Joseph Vernon Carico, age 75, died at his residence in Tallahassee on Friday, June 20, 2003. He was educated at William King High School in Abingdon, Emory and Henry College, Emory, Va., and the University of Virginia School of Education in Charlottesville, Va. Mr. Connett, age 85, died Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at his home. Nancy Elmore ATHENS, W.Va. -- Nancy Carolyn Farley Reed Elmore, 67, of 216 Caldwell St., died Saturday, June 21, 2003, at Princeton Community Hospital in Princeton. Born Oct. 10, 1935, at McComas, she was the daughter of the late Garland C. Elmore Sr. and Helen Mable Sutherland Elmore. She was previously married to Oscar P. Farley Sr. with whom she had their four children. Ms. Elmore was a member of the Concord United Methodist Church in Athens where she served as Sunday School superintendent, assisted in the nursery and was a member of the Martha Pollack Circle. She was a graduate of Athens High School and Concord College. She received her master's degree in safety education from Marshall University. She was an elementary school teacher for many schools in the area, including Lashmeet and Athens, and retired from Knob Elementary in Princeton in 1998. "Miss Nancy's" dedication to education after retirement was demonstrated by her loving commitment to students in need, whom she voluntarily mentored and tutored in her home. She received the Outstanding Citizenship Award in Athens in 2001. Survivors include four children, Frances Elizabeth (Beth) Farley Walker Gillespie and her husband Jerry of Richlands, Oscar Patrick Farley Jr. of Norfolk, Va., Thelma Allene Farley and partner, Donna Crisco Cox of Green Valley and Bryan Allen Farley and his wife Jacki of Athens; three sisters, Mary F. Surratt and her husband Jim of Cincinnati, Thelma J. Diachenko and her husband Nick of Arcadia, N.C., and Martha J. Gibson WYTHEVILLE -- Virginia Kirkland Gibson, age 93, passed away Saturday, June 21, 2003, at her residence. She was born in Tacoma, Wash., May 4, 1910, daughter of the late Harry P. and Lilie Jack Kirkland. She moved from Richlands to Wytheville 22 years ago and was a retired hospital clinic administrator. She was a member of the Wytheville Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Summerfield Gibson; and two sisters, Erma Gilmore and Irene Gerlach. She is survived by one daughter, Gail Gose of Johnson City; one son, Richard Kirkland "Kirk" Gibson of Wytheville; three grandchildren, Katherine Gibson of Charlotte, N.C., Rebecca Haworth of Johnson City and Richard F. Gose of Conway, S.C. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, June 25, 2003, at 1 p.m. in the Barnett Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Wade Tucker officiating. Mike Gilbert BLOUNTVILLE -- Michel Wayne Gilbert, age 60, passed away on Friday, June 20, 2003, at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was born in Oakland, California, the son of Billie Gilbert-Lewis and Wayne Gilbert. He was a resident of Blountville since 1999, having previously lived in Knoxville for a long time. Mr. Gilbert was a Vietnam War era veteran, serving as an interpreter in the Air Force from 1960 to 1964. He also served as a communications technician from 1965 to 1975 in the U.S. Navy. He studied at Yale University and earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville in 1979. He was an avid UT football and Lady Vols basketball fan. Prior to his disability of multiple sclerosis in 1999, Mr. Gilbert had been employed at House Hassan Hardware in Knoxville for 14 years. At the time of his death, he was enrolled in the Masters program in Storytelling at East Tennessee State University. Mr. Gilbert was an active member of the Jonesborough Storytellers Guild. He was a state-certified volunteer for prison ministry which he did at Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary on many Thursday nights. He was a devout Christian man and worshipped at First Baptist Church of Blountville and Celebration Church. Mr. Gilbert was preceded in death by his father, Wayne Gilbert. Surviving are his loving wife of five years, Lois Whitinger Gilbert; his daughter, Mary Elizabeth Gilbert of Sevierville; his son, John Michael Gilbert, daughter-in-law, Tera and granddaughter, Kara Jean, of Lexington, Ky.; his mother, Billie Gilbert-Lewis of Vacaville, Calif.; two brothers and sisters-in- law, Bruce and Mary Gilbert of Susanville and Ralph and Meredith Gilbert of Vacaville; several stepchildren; step-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 8:00 p.m., Monday, June 23, in Celebration Church in Blountville, with Rev. Craig Frye and Rev. Clay Austin officiating. The committal service and interment will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday in Gunnings Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Highlands Fellowship Veterans Honor Guard. Etta Mae Goodman BRISTOL -- Etta Mae Jackson Goodman, 94, died Friday, June 20, 2003, at home in the Meadowood addition. She was born in Washington County, Va., near Wallace, and prior to moving to Bristol, she lived in Benhams where she was an active member of Sugar Grove Union Church. She was a charter member of Jackson Memorial Church where she has attended for the past 37 years. Mrs. Goodman was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Paul G. Goodman; three sisters, Ida Jackson, Beulah Goodson and Lucille Clark; and three brothers, Ritzie, Freeman and Dan Jackson. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Betty and Gene Owen of Bristol Tennessee, and Freeda and B. F. Justice GRUNDY -- Harold Lawson Justice, 71 years of age, went to be with the Lord Thursday, June 19, 2003, at Holston Valley Medical Center, Kingsport. Born in Buchanan County, April 6, 1932, he was the son of the late Roy Justice and Georgia Stacy Justice. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, a retired coal miner having worked for Pittston Coal Company, a member of the UMWA Local 1641 District 20, a former member of the Sportsman Club and a member of the Little Prater Church of Christ since 1997. He enjoyed woodworking, keeping his vehicles clean and was a loving husband, father and grandfather. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Hazel Ann Roberts Justice; one son, David Justice; one sister, Wilma Justice; and one brother, Ray Justice. He is survived by his second wife, Ruby Dawson Justice of Grundy; three daughters, Tisha Skeens and husband Danny of Grundy, Glenda Justus and husband Truitt and Jennifer Justus and husband Jerry, all of Hurley, Va.; one son, Timothy Justice and wife Katie of Abingdon; two stepsons, Ricky Fields of Grundy and Ted Fields of Kingsport; and one brother, Roy Justice of Hurley. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Amy McClanahan, Shad Skeens, Andrea Justus, Josh Justus, Logan Justice and Kassity Justice; and one great-grandchild, Jacob McClanahan. Sophia Komaromy ELIZABETHTON -- Mrs. Sophia Dugger Komaromy, age 95, formerly of 433 Beasley Street, died Saturday, June 21, 2003, at Hermitage Health Care, following a brief illness. Mrs. Komaromy was a native of Elizabethton and a daughter of the late T. A. Dugger Sr. and Ellen Marie Syren Dugger. She was a graduate of Elizabethton High School and Carson-Newman College Class of 1937. She was a retired teacher of the city and county, having taught school for 32 years. She retired from teaching in 1970. She was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church and the Dorcas Sunday School Class. Mrs. Komaromy held memberships in the national, state and local Retired Teacher's Association and the Julius Dugger Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, of which she was a member for over 60 years. She was a member of the Watauga Historical Association, The Tipton Haynes Historical Association, The Elizabethton Woman's Club, The American Association of Retired Persons and the Senior Citizens. She was preceded in death by her husband, Geza Komaromy in 1993. Survivors include one son, Sgt. Major Richard Komaromy, Retired, of Manassas, Va; one daughter and son-in-law, Janice and James Watrous, of Bristol Tennessee; two granddaughters, Catherine Watrous Burkhart, of Knoxville and Rebecca Watrous, of Nashville; two nieces, Mrs. James Taylor and Mrs. Bob Carver, both of Kingsport; two nephews, Benjamin Dugger and Brent Dugger, both of Elizabethton; several grand-nieces and grand-nephews; and several cousins also survive. She was born June 12, 1930, in Russell County, Va., a daughter of the late John and Bertha Ray. Mrs. Maynard was a member of the College Church of Christ in Searcy. She is survived by one son, Larry Roland Maynard II of Park City, Utah; two daughters: Melinda Loveday of Blountville; and Rebecca Higginbotham of Searcy; two brothers: Raymond Ray of Akron, Ohio; and John R. Ray of Lebanon; two sisters: twin sister Elma Campbell of Piney Flats, Tenn.; and Mary Jane Vance of Bristol Tennessee; and five grandchildren, Larry Roland Maynard III, Jennifer Marie Maynard, Alana Lea Loveday, John Ryan Maynard Higginbotham and Alex Edward Higginbotham. Lorraine Messimer Lorraine Doris Frank Messimer, age 90, died Thursday, June 19, 2003, at NHC Healthcare. She was a native of West Frankfort, Ill., and a daughter of the late Emil Thomas Frank and Vina Jane Williams Frank. She attended Christian Normal Institute, Grayson, Ky., and graduated from East Tennessee State College. She was a lifetime member of Order of the Eastern Star and a member of Grandview Christian Church. Mrs. Messimer was a member of Fig Tree. She married Erby Messimer Aug. 26, 1934, and enjoyed 58 years of a loving marriage and Christian home. She was a wonderful preacher's wife who served as a Sunday School teacher, a women's group leader and generously shared her home, love and laughter with many people through the years. She loved teaching children at Barnes, Austin Springs and Lamar Elementary Schools in the Washington County School System. Mrs. Messimer was preceded in death by a brother and sister-in-law, Marion and Cornelia Frank; a brother-in-law, Frank Aten; a sister, Ernestine Frank, a twin baby brother and sister; a daughter-in-law, Pat Messimer; and a son, Don Messimer. Wheeler Moore BLOUNTVILLE -- Wheeler "Jim" Moore, age 71, a resident of Sullivan County since the age of two, when his parents, John and Cora Moore, moved from his birth- place in Washington County, Va., to the Gunnings Community, passed away early Saturday morning, June 21, 2003. Mr. Moore was of the Baptist faith and attended several local churches. He worked for a variety of companies in the Tri-Cities area and retired from The Robinette Company. Wrenn NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Venice Uneeta Evans Wrenn, 75, died at Riverside Regional Medical Center on Saturday, June 21, 2003. She was a native of Wise County, Va., and a resident of Newport News since 1943, where she was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Dorsey Wrenn; two brothers, Delmus C. Evans of Bristol Virginia, and Elza A. Evans of Chattanooga, Tenn.; great-grandchildren, Matthew Gregory Trissel and Kristy Michelle Trissel. Mrs. Wrenn is survived by two sons, Larry Evans Wrenn and wife, Ileen G. Wrenn of Battery Park, Va., and Melvin Douglas Wrenn of Gulfport, Miss.; and a daughter, Donna Marie Wrenn of Newport News. Other survivors include three grandchildren, Lory Trissel, Barry Linhart and Nevin Baillio; five great- grandchildren, Amy and Kyle Trissel, Andrew and Jacob Linhart and David Baillio.
