A daughter of the late Albert Lee Pugh and Bessie Scott Pugh, she was a native of Buchanan County, Va., and had lived in Bristol for 50 years before moving to Hickory in 1994. She was of the Baptist faith and was the widow of Ray S. Blankenship. Survivors include a son, David Blankenship and his wife Debbie of Hickory; a sister, Dolores Debona of Loysville, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews including Norma Thompson of Roanoke, Virginia. He was a resident of Abingdon where he worked as a convenience station attendant for the Washington County Solid Waste Department before his retirement. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean conflict, a retired employee of Island Creek Coal Company VP 3, a member of United Mine Workers of America Local Union 1640. He was a professional painter for more than 52 years. Mr. Ratliff is survived by his wife of 37 years, Dollie Mae Ratliff, Vansant; one son, Kenny and wife Leigh Ratliff, Vansant; one sister, Jessie Gentry, Louisiana; three brothers, Claude Ratliff, Elmer Ratliff, Hodgenville, Ky., and Ron Ratliff, Louisiana; and one grandson, Kenneth Henry Ratliff II. Smith WISE - Anthony Joseph Smith, age 24, passed away early Friday morning as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was born in Wise and lived most of his life in Norton. He was a graduate of John I. Burton High School and had just completed an enlistment in the U.S. Marine Corps. Anthony had just joined the Marine Reserves and was about to move to Knoxville and continue his education. He was of the Protestant faith. Charles Vaughan SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Charles G. Vaughan, 78, of the Hungry Hill section, was called safely home on Wednesday, June 25, 2003. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps prior to World War II at the Hungry Mother Park in Virginia. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II and attained the rank of sergeant. Following World War II, he re-enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served his country during the Korean conflict. He later served during the Vietnam conflict and received the Vietnam Service Medal. He retired from the Air Force after more than 20 years of service with the rank of staff sergeant. Following his military retirement, he was employed as a custodian for the Springfield School Department and worked at the Tapley Street School and the Glenwood Elementary School and retired in 1981. He also worked part time at the Connecticut Valley Biological Supply Company in Southampton. He was born in Alvarado, Va., on Nov. 23, 1924, a son of the late Leslie E. and Eula L. (Larmer) Vaughan and moved to Springfield in 1962. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Hope Church in Springfield. He was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps Chapter 158 at the Holyoke Soldiers Home in Holyoke, a member and past senior vice commander of the Disabled American Veterans Post 68 in Springfield and a member of the Agawam and Fairview Sportsman's Clubs. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 46 years, Odelia R. (Cote) Vaughan, who was called home on Nov. 29, 1997; and his beloved son, Lance Cpl. Ronnie G. Vaughan, who was killed in action in Vietnam on Jan. 21, 1971. He was also predeceased by his dear brother, Jack Vaughan, who was called home on Oct. 12, 2001. Vaughan and his wife Deborah of Westfield and Linda R. Whalen and her husband Michael of Palmer; his 18 cherished grandchildren; his five cherished great- grandchildren; his dear brother, Jerry Vaughan of Damascus; his four dear sisters, Dorothy Smith of Fairfield, Va., Virginia Williamson of Meadowview, Ann Pierce of Abingdon and Marilyn Pennington of Nixa, Mo.; and his many dear nephews and nieces. His funeral will be held Monday morning, June 30, 2003, at 8:45 a.m. from the St. Pierre Springfield Funeral Chapels, 7 Chapin Terrace, at the corner of Chestnut Street in Springfield, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Hope Church, Armory Street, in Springfield. His burial with military honors will follow the Mass at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 421 Tinkham Road, Springfield. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday June 29, 2003, from 2 to 6 p.m. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made in his memory to the Massachusetts Civilian Conservation Corps Chapter 158, in care of the Holyoke Soldiers Home, 110 Cherry St., Holyoke, MA 01040.
