Born in Franklin County, she was the daughter of the late Ernest Foster and Hattie Elizabeth Collins Poythress. She was the widow of Wilton Lee Adcock Sr. Mrs. Adcock was a homemaker. She once was a cafeteria manager at Aycock High School and was retired as a cafeteria manager with the Macke Company. She taught needlework and craft classes and was named Woman of the Year in 1981 by the Vance County Homemaker's Extension Club. She was a devoted member of West End Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. in West End Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Robert L. Yates and Rev. Elizabeth J. Edwards. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens. She was the daughter of the late Ben Rush and Corrie Potter. She was of the Holiness faith and a housewife. Sam Carter CHAPMANVILLE, W.Va. -- Sam Carter, 87, died Saturday, July 5, 2003, in Wellmont Hospice House, Bristol Tennessee. He was born in Logan, W.Va., Sept. 15, 1915, a son of Barnette and Anna Belle Dillon Carter. He was a heavy equipment operator for 40 years in the mining industry and an avid fisherman. He was a member of Chapmanville Church of Christ in West Virginia. Mr. Carter was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by the following sisters and brothers, Julie Killen, Lula Mills, Alice Killen, Clara Butcher, Nancy Stollings, Dorothy Marcum, June Whitt, Carlos Carter, Jim Carter, and Tolbert Carter. Frederick K. Godsey BRISTOL, Tenn. -- Frederick K. Godsey, age 74, passed away Saturday, July 5, 2003, in the Bristol Regional Medical Center. Mr. Godsey was a native and lifelong resident of the Bristol area. He was the son of the late Elbert and Jewel Godsey. He was a member of the Virginia Avenue Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, where he served during the Korean conflict. She was born in Bristol Virginia, a daughter of the late S. Bruce and Ruth Clay Jones, and was the widow of Dean McDougall Greiner. She was a graduate of Sullins College and the Court Reporting School of Chicago. At the time of her death, she was completing her 60th year as a court reporter, having served in Virginia, Tennessee and Kentucky. She was the first female member of the Virginia Court Reporters Association and had served as president of both the Virginia and Tennessee Court Reporters Associations. She was a member of Central Presbyterian Church, the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Daughters of the American Revolution, Junior League, Three Arts Club and Bristol Historical Association. Survivors include two nieces, Nancy Hopping of Bluff City and Jan Brewer of Oakland, Calif.; three cousins, Joyce Hagy of Bluff City, Jane Collins of Geneva, Fla., and Stephen Clay of Knoxville. She was preceded in death by a sister, Ada Belle Jones Thomas; and a brother, S. Bruce Jones Jr., who was killed while serving in the U.S. Army in World War II. John Thomas King John Thomas King, age 80, of the Holston Valley Community, passed away on Saturday, July 5, 2003, at his residence. He was the son of the late James Cowan King and Katie Lou Raysor King of the Holston Valley community in Sullivan County. He was a lifelong resident of the Holston Valley area, a retired farmer and a retired letter carrier with the United States Postal Service. He was a graduate of Holston Valley High School. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, James Albert King, William Raysor King and Clyde Cowan King. He was a faithful member of Cold Spring Presbyterian Church, having served as Sunday School superintendent, church treasurer, deacon, elder and trustee. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, 389th Bomber Group, serving overseas during World War II and participating in 30 missions over Germany and supporting troops landing on Normandy Coast on D-Day. He attained rank of staff sergeant and received the Distinguished Flying Cross Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters and a Good Conduct Medal. Shawn Ranae Drive, died July 4, 2003, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center. Born in Warren County, Ind., he was the son of the late George A. LaBounty and Lilly Nicholson LaBounty. He lived in Boswell, Ind. most of his life until moving to Fowler in the fall of 2002. He graduated from Boswell High School in 1937. He helped his father farm for a time, retired from the building services department of Purdue University and worked at Brown Rubber. He was a member of Boswell Lodge 486 F & AM, which later merged with Pine Village Lodge 315, and he received a 25-year pin. He served several terms as Grand Organizer of the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls. He was a member of the Boswell Church of Christ since 1929, serving as Sunday School teacher, deacon, elder and was named elder emeritus in 1978. Surviving are his wife, Stella LaBounty; one son, G. Michael LaBounty of Bristol Tennessee; one brother, John LaBounty, Boswell; two granddaughters, Lauren and Kathryn; and several nieces and nephews. She was of the Primitive Baptist faith and, while living in Chesapeake for the last six years, she attended the Jackson Memorial Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dexter Cleo Perkins; three sons, Scott Perkins, Kermitt Perkins and James Perkins; two sisters Bertha Cruey and Maude Gilmer; and one brother, Claude Ray McGlothlin. David Shamblin CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Mr. David Clyde Shamblin, age 60, of 829 Bellmont Ave., died Tuesday, July 1, 2003, at his home following a brief illness. He was born in Richlands and was a son of the late Doyle Robert and Helen Lucille Coe Shamblin. He was a 1960 graduate of Richlands High School and was a retired self-employed construction worker. He had made his home in Charlottesville most of his life, was a U. S. Air Force veteran and was of the Baptist faith. Survivors are: two sisters, Mrs. Rebecca Shamblin Hurt of Richlands and Mrs. Linda Shamblin Deel of Richlands; one brother, Mr. Bobby Shamblin Jr. of Puerto Rico; niece, Renee Nunn; nephews, Bobby Deel and wife Tina and Matthew Hurt; step-nieces, Kim Dye and Brandy Helton; aunt, Cora Blankenship; and special friends, Ed and Lisa Housley. Graveside services for Mr. David Clyde Shamblin will be conducted Monday at 11 a.m. at the Hankins Cemetery in Richlands, with Rev. Bill Fletcher officiating. Members of the Casey-Shortt VFW Post 9640 of Richlands and the Disabled American Veterans Tazewell County Chapter 31 will conduct military graveside rites. Billy Kyle Stone CLINTWOOD -- Billy Kyle Stone, age 55, went home to be with the Lord on July 4, 2003. He was a 1966 graduate of Clintwood High School, a U.S. Army veteran and a retired employee with Clinchfield Coal Company. He was an honorary member of the Kentucky Colonel. He was a member of Skeetrock Community Church for 22 years and served as a deacon for 12 years. Kyle loved the Lord and witnessed to everyone he spoke to. His desire in life was to win souls for the Lord. He was loved and will be missed by all his family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Ellen Matney Stone of Clintwood; daughter, Stacie Ann Hensley and son-in-law Ben Hensley of Fort Bragg, N.C.; son, Jamison Kyle Stone of the home; parents, James "Pete" Kyle Stone and Edith Faye Stone of Clintwood; brother, Sammy Stone and wife Retha Stone of Clintwood; and a special niece, Melonie Stone and husband Seth Baker of Clintwood. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 1 p.m. in the Mullins Funeral Home Chapel, with Clergymen Douglas Stone, Randolf Kendrick, John Farmer and Joe Glenn Sluss officiating and with Bobby Joe Phipps reading the eulogy.
