Born in Russell County, Va., she was the daughter of the late John Palmer and Ava Robinette Hall. She was a member of the Trinity Tabernacle Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William H. (Bill) Arrington; two sons, Glen Arrington and Bobbie E. Arrington; and three brothers, John Hall, Charlie Hall and Willie Hall. She is survived by five sons: Howard A. Arrington and wife Ann of Roanoke; Fred Arrington of the home; Willard Arrington of the home; Teddy Arrington and wife Jewell of Tazewell; and Norman Arrington and wife Charlotte of Richlands; two sisters, Emily Josie Spaid of Indianapolis and Louise Wicks of Doran Bottom, Va.; several grandchildren, great- grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews also survive. He was a painter for 20 years, and his biggest passion was Harley Davidsons as a collector, an owner and a rider. He always said riding his Harley was kind of freedom you could never imagine. Campbell BRISTOL, Tenn. -- Callie Victoria Callahan Campbell, age 89, 1060 Bristol Caverns Highway, died Monday, July 7, 2003, at her niece's residence in Bristol Tennessee. She was born June 27, 1914, in Washington County, Va., a daughter of the late George and Addie Morley Callahan. She was a housewife and member of Bethel Baptist Church. Survivors: sister, Bonnie Rogers Federow; brothers, Bert Callahan, Floyd Callahan and Homer Callahan; special niece, Polly McReynolds; and several nieces and nephews. Weaver Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Bruce C. Carruth EMORY, Va. -- Dr. Bruce Chandler Carruth, age 77, died Monday, July 7, 2003, at his residence. He was born Sept. 7, 1925, in Commerce, Texas, to the late Joseph Enoch Carruth II and Bertha Felder Carruth. He was raised in Statesboro, Ga., and had lived in Emory for more than 40 years. Dr. Carruth served Emory & Henry College as professor of psychology for 28 years, beginning his era of teaching in 1962. He was a graduate of Millsaps College, received his master's degree from Emory University and his Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University. Before coming to Emory & Henry College, he was a part time faculty member at Millsaps College, had served the Veterans Administration at Johnson City, Tenn., and was in private practice as a clinical psychologist at Tennessee's first mental health clinic. He served in the U.S. Army from 1943- 1945. After his retirement in 1990, he remained very active in the community serving a wide range of boards, committees and projects. He was a construction volunteer for Emory Service Project, aiding with area home repairs. He was a member of the Local Human Rights Committee at Southwest Virginia Mental Health Institute, addressing the needs and challenges of mentally ill persons and he was serving as chair at the time of his death. He was also a member of the Regional Human Rights Committee. He was an active member of Emory United Methodist Church and was vitally involved with the children's ministry called Superkids. His passions were art, drama music, poetry and literature. His love of music led him to personally purchase a set of fine stringed instruments for the sole purpose of loaning them to children in the community who wished to take lessons. He was also an extremely talented craftsman whose carvings defied the confines of wood. He is survived by his wife, Deb Carruth, his daughter, Lauren and his son, Chandler, all of Emory; two brothers: Joseph E. Carruth III of McComb, Miss.; and Rev. W. Carlton Carruth and wife Augusta of Brunswick, Ga.; and a sister, Margaret Carruth of Dublin, Ga. A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Friday, July 11, 2003, at the Memorial Chapel of Emory United Methodist Church with Rev. Beverly Robinette and Rev. Timothy Kobler officiating. Johnson Bernard Franklin Johnson went home to be with the Lord on Monday, July 7, 2003, after a brief illness. He was born Oct. 26, 1925, in Mendota, Va., a son of the late Robert Johnson and Carry Belton Johnson. He was a life long resident of Bristol Virginia until moving to Beaufort, S.C., after the death of his wife, Laura Annabelle Bolling Johnson in June of 2001. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and was also active in the Navy Reserves. After his honorable discharge from the Navy, he worked at Burlington Mills and later at Raytheon. He served as supervisor of maintenance for the Bristol City Schools from 1970 until his retirement in 1989. In addition to his parents, Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by four brothers, Ed Johnson, Douglas Johnson, Howard Johnson and Millard Johnson; and by two sisters, Lucille Barns and Pauline Lowe. He is survived by two daughters: Mary Ann Brungart of Princeton, N.J.; and Patrice "Pat" Butler of Beaufort; a brother, Bill Johnson of Morehead City, N.C.; two sisters: Blanche Davis of Bristol Tennessee; and Helen Brown of Chicago; two granddaughters, Laura Brungart-Stokes and Elizabeth "Beth" Brungart-Garcia; two grandsons, Matthew Butler and Joshua Butler; and two great- grandchildren, Jesse Stokes and Kelly Stokes. Link POMARIA, S.C. -- The Reverend William H. Link, of 5514 New Hope Road, died Sunday, July 6, 2003, at his residence. Born in Daytona Beach, Fla., and growing up in Bristol Tennessee, Pastor Link was a son of the late Rev. and Mrs. James Lester Link. He graduated from Lenoir Rhyne College in Hickory, N.C., and the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Columbia, S.C. He had served Lutheran parishes in Konnarock, Va., Gibsonville and Richfield, N.C. He served as pastor of Bachman Chapel Lutheran Church, Prosperity, from 1964 until 1973, and Pine Grove Lutheran Church, Lone Star, S.C., from 1989 until 1994. He was currently serving as pastor of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Pomaria, since 1994. He formerly served as a volunteer fireman and did volunteer work in schools for children with special needs and signs for the deaf. He was a graduate of Bristol Tennessee High School and attended East Tennessee State University. He served in the Honor Guard of the 35th Infantry of the U.S. Army in Hawaii. Following his retirement from Sears, he worked for several years at Templin Flower Gardens. He was an active member of First United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, Lois Elliott Massey; two sons, William W. Massey Jr. of Bluff City and Pierce E. Null Jr. Henderson, N.C. -- Lee Howard Null Jr., 63, of 131 Scarlet Circle, Franklinton, N.C., died Monday, July 7, 2003, in Franklin Regional Medical Center. Born in Smyth County, Va., he was the son of the late Lee Howard Null Sr. and Ruby Campbell Null. Mr. Null was retired from Coca Cola Bottling Company in Durham after 37 years. He was a former volunteer fireman with the City of Henderson and retired after 17 years with the Vance County Rescue Squad. Currently, he was employed with Pre-Flight Airport Services in Raleigh. Surviving are two daughters, Cheryl N. Freeman of Ontario, Canada, and Sharon Null of Henderson; two sons, Jeff H. Null and Mike Null, both of Henderson; four sisters, Cora N. Felts, Edna N. Naimaster, Edith N. Evans and Shirley N. Jackson, all of Smyth County; three brothers, Gordon Null and Buck Null, both of Smyth County, and Ray Null of Henderson; and five grandchildren. She was employed with Dickenson County Medical Center as a home health nurse for 13 years and was presently with Home Nursing. Ms. Owens was of the Baptist faith. She was a member of the Green Valley Baptist Church and was the widow of Louis Garnett Pitt. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Mae Cochran and Oma Swafford; and three brothers, Woodrow, Cowan and James Fleming. Mollie Shoun MOUNTAIN CITY -- Mollie Mae Nichols Shoun, age 88, passed away July 7, 2003 at home. She was a native of Johnson County and was born May 7, 1915, to the late William Arthur and Lula Winebarger Nichols. Mrs. Shoun was preceded in death by her husband, Emil M. "Bud" Shoun in 1983; one sister; and six brothers. She was elder emeritus and the last surviving charter member of the Mountain City Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Shoun was a Christian who loved the Lord, her family, her church and her community. Survivors include four daughters and sons-in-law: Selma and Ernest Fifer, Mountain City; Nancy Burt, Mountain City; Kay and Buddy Bowers, Harriman, Tenn.; and Katherine and Daniel Moore, Rockwood, Tenn.; one brother, Ray Nichols, Johnson City; four grandsons, Rev. James Morley, Timothy Morley, David Bowers and Matthew Moore; three granddaughters, Holly Kharitonashvili, Amber Ward and Mariellen Moore; one great-grandson, Eric Kharitonashvili; six half brothers and half sisters; beloved nephew, Robert Gentry of Suitland, Md.; and several other special nieces and nephews.
