Mary Ruth Corral BRISTOL, Tenn. – Mary Ruth “Mouse” Corral, age 47, a former resident of Bristol Tennessee, went to be with the Lord Thursday, July 10, 2003, at her home in Cherokee, N.C. Ms. Corral was a 1973 graduate of Sullivan East High School, a U.S. Navy veteran and was of the Presbyterian faith. She was preceded in death by her father, Robert A. Corral. Ms. Corral was of Indian descent and was active in Indian ritual. She was also a falconer having raised and trained “Sonny,” a falcon that she showed and demonstrated at Indian PowWows. Survivors include her mother and stepfather, Ruth and Bud Tester, of Bristol; brothers, Bobby Corral, Cottondale, Fla., and Darrell Tester, Bristol; sister, Marinell Tester, Bristol; aunt, Ruby McVey; and uncle, Bill Swift; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. James Emitt Helton ABINGDON – Mr. James Emitt “Pops” Helton, 77, died Wednesday, July 16, 2003, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. Mr. Helton was a native and lifelong resident of Washington County. Farris Funeral Service of Abingdon is serving the Helton family. Nell Maiden BRISTOL – This life of Nell Maiden, age 62, came to an end July 15, 2003, at her residence. Born in this area, she resided here most of her life though she also lived in Schweinfurt, Germany, Columbia, S.C., and most recently in Washington, D.C. She was the daughter of Blanche Moore Maiden and the late (Cecil) Glen Maiden. She was a founding member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of the Highlands in Meadowview. She graduated from Tennessee High School and married Carl McGrady. She obtained a bachelor’s degree at Virginia Intermont College and earned a master’s degree from East Tennessee State University. She taught English at King College, Virginia Intermont and East Tennessee State University. Ms. Maiden led numerous poetry and writing workshops and was actively involved in the annual Virginia Highlands Festival. Her poems have been published in various journals and in 1996 a collection of her poetry, Reflections in a Clock Shop, was published by the Sow’s Ear Press. Most recently, she was employed by the Department of Veterans Affairs as a manager and program analyst. Nell Maiden was a supporter of the arts in each community she lived and held a special admiration of Appalachian culture. In Washington, D.C., she worked with a community group interviewing longtime residents of Capitol Hill, gathering their stories and experiences of that neighborhood. A lover of language, she believed in the power of stories to help tell us who we are and where we may be going. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by a son, James Carl McGrady. In addition to her mother, survivors include a daughter, Leigh McGrady of Nashville; two sons: Brian McGrady of Asheville, N.C.; and Andrew McGrady of Bristol Tennessee; two brothers and sisters-in-law: Dale and Edith Maiden of Bristol Tennessee; and Allen and Carolyn Maiden of Jonesborough, Tenn.; a granddaughter, Katelyn Nicley of Nashville; her uncle, Bill Maiden; and three nephews, Kenneth Maiden of Bristol Tennessee, Dr. Philip Maiden of Ohio, and David Maiden of Connecticut. Nell also leaves behind additional family, friends, colleagues and students. To all of them and to Wellmont Hospice, her children wish to express gratitude for their loving support. Elizabeth Miley NORTON – Miss Elizabeth Harris Miley, 99, died Wednesday, July 16, at Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital in Norton. She was born on Oct. 9, 1903, in Raphine, Va., the youngest child of her parents, Mr. Samuel E. Miley and Mrs. Clementine Terrell Miley. Miss Miley was valedictorian of her graduating class at Raphine High School and attended Madison College, now James Madison University. She was employed as a nurse, receptionist and accountant by Dr. Waverly R. Payne of Newport News, Va., until her retirement. Miss Miley was a member of New Providence Presbyterian Church in Raphine and attended the Gladeville Presbyterian Church in Wise, where she made her home. Miss Miley was preceded in death by her parents; and her brothers, Mr. Sam Miley and Mr. Henry Miley of Raphine and Mr. George Hunter Miley of Williamsburg; her sisters, Mrs. Genevieve Miley Wilton of Harrisonburg, Va., and Mrs. Andrew Jackson Renforth Jr. (Polly) of Yorktown, Va. She is survived by her niece, Mrs. J.W. Wilson Jr., Port Republic, Va.; and a nephew, Dr. George Hunter Miley Jr., Champagne, Ill. Simcox BRISTOL, Va. – Clifford D. “Donnie” Simcox Jr., age 55, of 26 Highland Road, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, July 16, 2003, in the Holston Valley Medical Center. He was born Sept. 30, 1947, in Detroit, but lived most of his life in the Damascus and Bristol Virginia areas. He had retired from the Machinery Components Division at Electro Mechanical Corp. in 2001. He was also a former employee of Raytheon, Sundstrand, Electrolux and Monroe. He was an Air Force veteran, having served as a sergeant in the Vietnam War and was a recipient of the Air Force Commendation Medal. He was a charter member of Central Baptist Church in Bristol Virginia, where he served the Lord in the music ministry. He was preceded in death by his father, Clifford D. Simcox Sr.; and one niece, Melissa Holdren. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Linda Church Simcox. Also surviving: son, Michael Simcox and wife, Gina; daughter, Michelle Lander and husband, Mitch; mother, Ora Simcox; grandchildren, Kellie and Cody Lander and Keith and Brian Simcox; sisters: Joyce Holdren and husband, Joe; and Karen Strouth; brother, Tim Simcox; three nieces; and two nephews. Surviving are her husband, Herbert Stanley; a son, Millard Edwards of Coeburn; a daughter, Amber Winebarger of Sevierville, Tenn.; three stepsons: Charlie Stanley of Coeburn; Carl Stanley of Wise; and Bobby Stanley of Cumberland, Tenn.; six step- daughters, Janice McConnell, Susie Mills, Nina Faye Page, Patsy Meade, Deloris Stanley and Darlene Stanley, all of Coeburn; a sister, Lola Wright of St. Paul; two grandchildren; several step-grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 8:00 p.m. Friday in the Sturgill Funeral Home Chapel, Coeburn, with the Rev. Les Ritchie officiating. Graveside services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Saturday in the Redeemed Baptist Church Cemetery, Landrum. The family will receive friends after 6:00 p.m. Friday at the Sturgill Funeral Home, Coeburn. Wagner SURGOINSVILLE, Tenn. – Graveside service for William E. “Bill” Wagner will be 2 p.m. Friday, July 18, 2003, at Hawkins County Memorial Gardens.
