The family will receive friends on Sunday, August 3, 2003, from 5-7 p.m. in Anderson Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Monday, Aug. 4, 2003, at 11 a.m. in the Baptist Church of Beaufort, with burial in Beaufort National Cemetery. Mrs. Bennett was born on May 31, 1925, in Hayter's Gap, Va. She was the daughter of the late James Franklin Scyphers and Maxine Scott Scyphers. She was an active member of The Baptist Church of Beaufort and served on numerous committees over the years. She also worked in banking for many years and retired from Wachovia Bank. Surviving are two sons, Raymond Bunn of Sacramento, Calif., and David Bunn of Bristol Tennessee; two daughters, Shirley Bennett of Burien, Wash., and Glenna Sue Murphy of Bristol Tennessee; one brother, Jerry Scyphers of Norton; one sister, Birdie Stewart of Jonesborough, Tenn.; two grandchildren and five great- grandchildren. She was a retired saleslady from Parks-Belk, Elizabethton. Mrs. Glover was a member of First Baptist Church and the Fidelis Sunday School Class. She was a former member of the Elizabethton Women's Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, former Chief of Police William Claude Glover, who died Oct. 11, 1990, and by a brother, Henry Richards. Mrs. Holman was a member of Belle Meadows Baptist Church, lifelong resident of Bristol, homemaker and retired employee of Hatchers Cleaners. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Romie Roberts and Millard Holman, and two sons, John Roberts and James Roberts. She was born in Grassy Creek, N.C., to the late Rev. Joseph Oscar and Laura Mae Porter Spencer. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James Stanley Livesay and a grandson, Ronnie Richardson. She was a graduate of Emory & Henry College, where she received a teaching degree. She was a lifelong teacher and started her teaching degree in a one-room school in Ashe County, N.C., and taught at Oak Hill Academy and Marion Intermediate School. He was a member of the Bible Way Church and Assembly of God, both at Raven, Va. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Eula Vance; four sisters, Rose Gertrude Ball, Irene Harmon, Gladys Harris and Virginia Radder, and five brothers, James William (Bill) Vance, Robert E. Vance, Howard William Vance, Estel Vance and Vernie Vance. George Ben Whited LEBANON -- George Ben Whited, 92, passed away Wednesday, July 30, 2003, in the Russell County Medical Center. Born October 23, 1910, in Russell County, a son of the late Dr. E. P. Whited and Ida Boyd Whited of Honaker, he was the husband of the late Lavie Tate Whited. A graduate of Emory & Henry College, he was employed by the Russell County School Board for 35 years, serving as a teacher, assistant principal and principal of Lebanon High School for 18 years, and as principal of Givens Elementary School for five years, retiring in 1973. Mr. Whited was a member of the Lebanon Memorial United Methodist Church, where he had served as Sunday School superintendent and had served on various boards of the church. He was a former agent for Jefferson Standard Insurance Co., a member of the Lebanon Masonic Lodge 251 A. F. & A. M., a past president of the Russell County Education Association, a member and past president of the Lebanon Lions Club. He had worked in the Boy Scouts of America in Russell County, was a past president of the Board of Directors of the Russell County Rescue Squad, and a former member of the Executive Committee of the Virginia High School League. The Town of Lebanon honored Mr. Whited by naming the street between Lebanon High School and Lebanon Elementary School, George Ben Whited Drive, for his work as an educator and years of service to the community. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Guy Whited and Fay Whited, and a sister, Catherine Harris. Survivors include a son, George Ben Whited Jr., Johnson City; a brother, Robert J. Whited, Honaker, and six nieces and nephews.
