She was a long-time resident of the Cedar Bluff area and was a member of the New Hope Assembly of God at Claypool Hill, Va. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Emory Stuart Bales; one brother, Mr. Henry L White; and six sisters, Mrs. Naomi Bales, Mrs. Dorothy Vance, Mrs. Helen Lyons, Mrs. June McCoy, Mrs. Joan Umble and Mrs. Jean Longworth. Survivors are: one sister, Mrs. Virginia Opal Coleman of Inverness, Fla.; and two brothers: Mr. Albert W. (Bill) White and wife Sue of Cedar Bluff; and Mr. Bailey L. Born January 16, 1919, in Russell County, a daughter of the late Giles Banner Smith and Lillie Mae Garrett Smith, she was the wife of the late Paul C. Barton. She was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and was of the Baptist faith. Combs Funeral Service in Lebanon is serving the family of Mrs. Barton. Jerry C. Bishop MARYVILLE, Tenn. -- Dr. Jerry C. Bishop, president emeritus of Lincoln Memorial University, age 60, passed away at his home on Tuesday, August 5, 2003, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was born December 8, 1942, in Sullivan County, Tenn., to the late Mack and Lula Kate Bishop of Church Hill, Tenn. Dr. Bishop graduated from Church Hill High School in 1961. He earned a bachelor of science degree from Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) in 1965; a master's degree from the University of Virginia in 1968; and a doctorate of education from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1987. Dr. Bishop began his career in education at Abingdon High School as a teacher and coach in 1965 and later served as principal of Abingdon High School. He left Abingdon in 1987 to become superintendent of schools in Lee County, Va., where he served until his retirement from public education in December 1997. In January 1998, Dr. Bishop was named vice-president for administration at Lincoln Memorial University. In July 1998, he was chosen by the Board of Trustees to be president of Lincoln Memorial University, in which capacity he served until illness forced his retirement in 2001. Dr. Bishop held memberships in numerous professional, civic and community organizations throughout his career. He was also a lifetime honorary member of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States (MOLLUS). Dr. Bishop was active in church throughout his adult life. He loved to share his faith with others and taught Sunday School for a number of years. At the time of his death, he was a member of the Dotson Memorial Baptist Church, Maryville, Tenn. Dr. Bishop enjoyed teaching and coaching and was a staunch advocate for children and young people. He was a member of the Knoxville Prospectors, a semi-pro baseball team that won the World Series of Semi-Pro Baseball in Battle Creek, Mich., in 1964; and a member of the LMU Railsplitter baseball team from 1961-1965. He loved gardening, hunting, golfing, fishing, collecting coins and Normal Rockwell art and figurines. Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Linda (Odum) Bishop, Maryville; three sons: Stan Bishop, Jonesville, Va.; Dr. Britt Bishop and wife Madeline, Maryville; and Drew Bishop, Jonesville; three beloved grandsons, Bob, Lucas and Mathias Bishop, Maryville; one brother, Rick Bishop, Kingsport; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. The funeral service will be conducted at the Dotson Memorial Baptist Church in Maryville, on Thursday, August 7. Mr. Chafins was born on June 10, 1960, in Grundy, Va., to the late John and Emogene Burnett Chafins. He had lived most of his life in the Big Rock area and had recently moved to the Bristol area. Eileen Dunn Stewart DAMASCUS -- Eileen Dunn Stewart, age 60, of 31076 Blossom Road, passed away on Tuesday, August 5, 2003, at Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon. She was a lifelong resident of Washington County, Va., and was the daughter of the late Robert and Hattie Blevins Dunn. She was a certified nursing aid working with the Washington County Health Department in Home Health Care. Mrs. Stewart was a member of the First Baptist Church. She is survived by one son, Jackie Stewart and his wife, Helen, of Abingdon; two daughters: Gail Burnette and her companion, Malcolm Berry, of Damascus; and Teena Price and her husband, Shawn, of Damascus; five sisters: Teen Buckley, of Damascus; Wilma Miller, of Abingdon; Juanita Thompson, of Damascus; Dixie McCracken, of Damascus; and Cathrine Vannoy, of Glade Spring; four brothers: Roland Dunn, of Damascus; Edd Dunn of Springfield, Va.; Harold Dunn, of Glade Spring; and Rance Dunn, of Glade Spring; four grandsons, Michael Burnette, Hunter Price, Austin Berry and Shane Lowe; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, August 7, 2003, in the First Baptist Church, with Brother Larry Bales, Brother Mark Baumgardner and Rev. Alan McCullough officiating.
