Austin ABINGDON -- Charles Newton Austin, M.D., 86, died Friday, August 8, 2003, at the James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Mountain Home, Tenn. Dr. Austin was a graduate of Duke University School of Medicine and was a board certified radiologist who practiced in Southwest Virginia for 33 years. He was on the honorary staff of Johnston Memorial Hospital and was a life member of the American Medical Association. During World War II, he piloted a B-17 Flying Fortress bomber out of England and was shot down on his tenth mission near Bremen, Germany, spending over two years in prison camps and on forced marches. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross, Purple Heart, Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Presidential Unit Citation and various campaign decorations. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth Vinson Austin, and his sister, Margaret Hall. Survivors include his wife, Mona Owens Austin; two daughters, Jeanne Austin Preston and husband, Donald Preston, of Greenville, S.C., and Anne Austin Thompson and husband, Mark Thompson, of Escondido, Calif.; two stepchildren, Sarah Buchanan Owens Bowser and husband, James Michael Bowser, of Gray, Tenn., and Christopher Douglas Owens and wife, Suzie Self Owens, of Bristol Tennessee; a grandson, David Austin Thompson of Escondido, and several nieces. The family will receive friends from 5 - 7 p.m. Monday, August 11, 2003, at the Farris Funeral Chapel with a funeral service to follow at 7 p.m., with Pastor Rick Light of Eastern Heights Presbyterian Church of Bristol Tennessee officiating. Edward Blankenship WYTHEVILLE -- Edward P. "Honey Bear" Blankenship, age 72, died Thursday in the Wythe County Community Hospital. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, L. Rebecca Tarter Blankenship of Wytheville; a daughter and son-in-law, Beverly Lynn and Jimmy Farmer of Rosedale, Va.; a grandson, Jared C. Farmer; a sister, Phyllis Ruth Blankenship of Richlands; three sisters-in-law, Patsy Fay Fleming of Wytheville, Ms. Jack (Patty) Blankenship of Tazewell and Ms. Bliss (Florene) Blankenship of Richlands; two brothers-in-law, Tandy Jack Fleming of Boise, Idaho, and William R. Fleming of Roanoke; special nephew and niece-in-law, Michael Keith and Marcella Blankenship; special great-nieces and great-nephews, Caroline, Avery, Elliott and Simon Edward Blankenship; several nieces and nephews; numerous cousins and friends also survive and a constant companion, Bozo and his beagles. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Eugene (Bliss) Blankenship, Charles R. (Coonie) Blankenship, Harold Ray Blankenship and Jack Brittain Blankenship Sr. He was an employee of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Department of Forestry, serving from Montana to Tongass National Forest in Southeast Alaska for 18 1/2 years. He came to the Wytheville Ranger District in 1979, retiring in 1992, after serving 36 1/2 years. He graduated from Richlands High in 1948, Bluefield College, West Virginia University and post graduate from Oregon State University. He served as a military policeman in the U.S. Army, a member of the American Legion Post 9, Moose Lodge of Wytheville and Big Walker Game & Fish Club. He was an avid gardener, outdoorsman and hunter, especially of groundhogs and squirrels. Graveside service will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Clinch Valley Memorial Cemetery, Richlands. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday evening, with a eulogy being given by Michael Keith Blankenship at 7 p.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel in Wytheville and Sunday from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Clinch Valley Memorial Cemetery, Richlands. Hayes, age 61, died Thursday, August 7, 2003, in Smyth County Community Hospital, Marion. He attended South Fork Baptist Church and enjoyed hunting, fishing and woodworking. Rush was a gifted carpenter, having built many houses in the area. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Rush E. Hayes Jr.; his parents, James and Demma Hayes; two brothers, Bill and Bob Hayes, and one sister, Robina Jo Hayes. He is survived by his wife, Belinda S. Hayes of Sugar Grove; one daughter and son--in-law, Malissa T. (Missy) and William (Tinker) Bowman of Marion; one son, Tony (Bear) Hayes of Marion; one stepdaughter, Brittany N. She was born on June 1, 1921, in Hayer, Kentucky. She was the daughter of Cleveland and Rhetta Stanley. She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Henry Albert Mullins; three sons, Sterling, Charles and Vernon; two infant daughters; also her sisters, Goldie Mullins, Pina Dotson and Lilly Hamilton, and a half brother, Bobby Stanley. She is survived by four sons, Verlon Mullins of Ozark, Ala., Daniel Mullins of Anderson, S.C., Lester Mullins of Clintwood and Clyde Mullins of Newton, N.C.; five daughters, Joanne McPeek and Faye Sykes of Clintwood, Betty Branham of Clinchco, May Skeens of St. Paul and Evelyn Phipps of Coeburn, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two half sisters, Ruby and Opal, and a half brother, Billy. She is also survived by her special friend, Flora Mullins, who was like a sister to her. Mae M. Owens HONAKER -- Mrs. Mae Miller Owens, age 96, of the Finney community of Honaker, passed away Thursday, August 7, 2003, in a Lebanon hospital. Born March 24, 1907, in Russell County, Va., she was a daughter of the late Martin V. and Vinia Griffith Miller. A lifelong resident of the Russell County area, she was a member of the Finney Baptist Church, Finney Senior Citizens and former member of Countiss Rebekah Lodge 31. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, McKinley "Ken" Owens, five sisters, and two brothers. In her generation, she was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Survivors include one daughter, Clara Nell Partin of Easley, S.C.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Park Dean and Shirley Owens of Honaker and Kenneth and Joy Owens of the home; five grandchildren, Debra and Sidney Alexander, Amy and Ryan Moore, Kelly Duncan, Suzette and Carter Mutter and Kenneth David Owens Jr. and Jennifer; seven great-grandchildren, Nicolas Alexander, Neil Alexander, McKinnley Moore, Kent Moore, Morgan Duncan, Ross Duncan and Melissa Mutter also survive. She was born February 11, 1920, in Wytheville, to the late Frank S. Findlay Sr. and Lula Bell Campbell Findlay. She was raised by her grandmother, Kate Spiller Campbell, and aunt, Eulalia Campbell, in Nashville. Mrs. Peck and her late husband, Virgil Glenn Peck, lived in Kingsport, where she was active in the Holston Valley Auxiliary, Girl Scouts, the Salvation Army Girl Guards and the Civil Air Patrol. She worshipped with the King's Highway Temple. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Frank S. Findlay Jr., John Campbell Findlay and Father Harris M. Findlay. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday in the Sturgill Funeral Home Chapel, Wise, with Pastor Charles Estep, Pastor Ben Murphy and Rev. Earl Wheatley Jr. officiating. Sturgill Funeral Homes, Wise, in charge of arrangements. Howard C. Worley BRISTOL, Tenn. -- Mr. Howard Charles Worley, age 67, died Thursday, August 7, 2003, at the Bristol Nursing Home. He was a native of Russell County, Va., and had lived in Abingdon before moving to Bristol 30 years ago. He was a member of the Walker Mountain Baptist Church and a retired employee of the Virginia Department of Transportation. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Lois Bradley Worley; two stepdaughters, Norma Jean Branson of Bristol Tennessee and Flora Diana Gasper of Blountville; one sister, Elizabeth Woodward of Blountville; three step-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be conducted Saturday, August 9, 2003, at 6:30 p.m. in the Farris Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Billy Denton, Rev. Donald Denton and Rev. Tommy Tester officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. A committal service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be Wayne Worley, John Worley, Ronnie Worley, Jimmy Worley, Ronnie Salyer, Michael Bowers and Zeb Cross Jr. Honorary pallbearer will be Ricky Worley.
