She was born in McDowell County, West Virginia, a daughter of the late Frank and Vicie Geralds Palmer, and was the widow of Adam Almaroad. She lived most of her life in Sullivan County and was of the Catholic faith. She was also preceded in death by two granddaughters, Alicia Almaroad and Cora Lee Almaroad. Survivors include two daughters, Sandy Jones and her husband David of Bluff City and Linda Folkner, wife of the late Jim Folkner, of Blountville; three sons, Roy Almaroad and his wife Vickie of Kingsport, Steve Almaroad and his wife Judy of Blountville and Glen Almaroad and his wife Carolyn of Blountville; a sister, Ann, of Eckman, W.Va.; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Singleton Funeral Service in Cedar Bluff. Karl Edward Bean ATHENS, W.Va. -- Mr. Karl Edward Bean, 57, passed away Friday, August 8, 2003, at his home. Born in Rochester, N.Y., area on November 21, 1945, he was the son of the late Frederic R. and Violet Roundtree Bean. He was raised in Scottsville, N.Y. He served in the U.S. Navy in the Vietnam Era. He was a graduate of Wheatland-Chili High School in Scottsville. He obtained his bachelor's degree from East Tennessee State University in Johnson City and his master's from Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg, Mo. After working at several radio outlets in the Tri-Cities area, he went on to his lifelong career of teaching broadcast communications. He served at Kilgore College, Kilgore, Texas; Missouri Valley College, Marshall, Mo.; Lincoln University, Jefferson City, Mo., and, most recently, Concord College in Athens. He is survived by his wife, Helen (King) Bean of Athens, formerly of Bristol Tennessee; brothers, Robert Bean of Scottsville and Richard Bean of Hilton, N.Y.; sister, Susan Berryman of Adrian, Mich., as well as several nieces and nephews. In honoring Karl's wishes, his body will be cremated and there will be no services. Hazel Buchholtz ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. -- Hazel Buchholtz, 85, died peacefully Friday, August 1, 2003, in The Moorings Health Center. A Rainbow Hospice member was playing her harp at the time. The memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, August 30, in the Harbor Room at The Moorings of Arlington Heights, the Reverend Donna Nelson officiating. Hazel was a native of Mt. Olive, Ill., and lived and maintained a home in Bristol Tennessee from 1969 until 2001. She lived the last several years of her life in Arlington Heights. She was a registered nurse and frequently volunteered in that capacity. She was the widow of Roland Buchholtz, a former board member of the National Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association. She is survived by three children, Jeff Buchholtz and wife Patricia of Rolling Meadows, Ill., Diane Evans of Aptos, Calif., and Janice Buchholtz and husband Jim Davis of Houston. Clark Jr. ABINGDON -- William T. Clark Jr., 75 years of age, passed away Friday, August 8, 2003, after an extended battle with Parkinson's Disease. He was a native of Abingdon. Bill was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian faith and served as a deacon and elder in the various places he lived. He was a successful businessman as owner/operator of Clark Petroleum Co., but the small farm he owned was his pride and joy. Raising cattle and Clydesdale horses was his love. Bill had an avid interest in outdoor activities, including hunting, fishing, camping and traveling. He took great pride in the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother, Sarah Katherine Keller Clark, his father, William Trigg "T" Clark Sr., and brother, Douglas Hope Clark. Surviving are his wife, Nell Combs Clark; daughters, Dr. Susan Clark Fleming and husband Clark, all of Abingdon, and Dr. Jenny L. Hopping, 96, died Thursday, August 7, 2003, in the Johnson City Medical Center. He was a Brooklyn, N.Y., native and a son of the late George and Emita Selka Hopping. Mr. Hopping was a Navy veteran of World War II. He had been employed for 43 years as an administrative assistant in the Office of Comptroller, City of New York. Mr. Hopping was preceded in death by his wife, Kathryn V. Hopping, and two brothers, George and Ralph Hopping. He is survived by a son, Robert D. Hopping, Bluff City. She was born in Castlewood and was a daughter of the late Cowan Campbell and Alba Margaret Evans Riner. Mrs. Kiser was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Kiser. She was a graduate of Temple Hill High School. She attended James Madison College, Harrisonburg, Va., and Clinch Valley College, Wise, with a B.S. degree from Appalachian State University, Boone, N.C. Mrs. Kiser retired from the Russell County School System with 40 years service, having taught 37 years at Castlewood Elementary School. She was a member of Fort Gibson United Methodist Church, Castlewood, where she was a Sunday School teacher for many years. She held a life membership in the Virginia Retired Teachers Association. She is survived by one son, Gail R. Kiser and wife Marie of Bristol Virginia; one grandson, Ben H. Kiser of Abingdon; several nieces and nephews; several great-nieces and great-nephews and a special friend, Geneva Mullins. Mr. McIver retired in May 2003 from VDOT as the state hydraulic engineer with 42 years of service. Oliver, age 90, 318 Overhill Drive, died Saturday, August 9, 2003, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Liza Jane Pierce Bowers. She was a homemaker and of the Presbyterian faith. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Stanley and Charlie Bowers; and one sister, Ellen Parks. Charles Michael Shaw Charles Michael "Mike" Shaw, age 48, passed away on Saturday August 2, 2003, at Ketchikan Memorial Hospital in Ketchikan, Alaska. He was the son of the late Charles and Louise Arnold Shaw. He was a carpenter and enjoyed fishing, camping and all other outdoor activities. He was a U.S. veteran who served in the U.S. Army. Tony Smile ELIZABETHTON -- H. Tony Smile, age 44, went home to be with Jesus on Monday, August 4, 2003, at his home. Born on Oct. 15, 1959, he had suffered for several years from heart problems and died from heart failure. He spent most of his life in the Bristol/Johnson City area, where he had many friends and accomplishments. He was a top insurance salesman and later led the sales department of a major telecommunications company for lucent technologies. He was an acclaimed photographer and song writer. He loved family get-togethers and to take his nieces and nephews fishing and bowling. He was a member of Borderview Christian Church in Elizabethton. Mr. Smile was preceded in death by his father, Jaber B. Smile. He left behind a mother, Linda Smile; four brothers, Scott, Al and Sammy Smile and Larry Swift; one sister (and best friend), Dianne Smile-Monforte, and several nieces and nephews. He always had a smile on his face and a kind word to say to others. His charismatic personality drew people to him and he never met a stranger. He was a wonderful son, brother, uncle, brother-in-law and friend to all. His passing was unexpected and leaves everyone who knew him with a sad heart. He will be missed by so many. Linda Jean Turner CLINCHPORT, Va. -- Linda Jean Turner went home to be with the Lord Saturday, August 9, 2003, in Holston Valley Medical Center after a long battle with cancer. Mrs. Turner was born May 2, 1952, in Kingsport. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister and friend to many. Survivors include her husband, James Franklin Turner; children, Paula Pruitt and husband Leland, Corbett Guy and wife Karen, Scotty Guy and wife Janette, Lisa Hale and fiancÈ Robert Griffith Jr., Chrystal Rodgers and fiancÈ Brian Rader and Michelle Diaz and husband Shannon; mother and father, Fannie and Ronnie Couch; grandchildren, Alicia Ann Guy, Tracey Haun, Brandi Steadman, Savanna Guy, Justin Petree, Jacob Diaz, Destiny Petree, Daniel Guy and Brianna Guy; two sisters, Freda Ratliff and Glenda Bledsoe; one brother, Jimmy Golden, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, August 11, 2003, in Akard Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ralph Huffman, Brian Rader, Robert Griffith Jr., Corbett Guy, Butch Bumbgardner and Lee Love.
