He was of the Baptist faith and was co-owner of Looney's Grocery Store in the Mill Creek section of Pound for 40 years. He was the son of the late Ira and Melissa (Strange) Austin. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, J.O. Looney; a sister, Beulah Edwards; and his stepfather, Charley Looney. Surviving are sisters, Vernell Wells, Stevensville, Md.; brother, Carl Austin, Pound; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. Roy William Barbrey MARION -- Roy William Barbrey, age 72, died Monday in the Edgemont Nursing Center in Wytheville. He was born in Smyth County, the youngest of 10 children to the late Marion B. and Betty Jane Blevins Barbrey, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Survivors include: two sons: William "Billy" Barbrey, Spartanburg, S.C.; and Glenn Gross, Marion; one daughter, Wendy Barbrey, Bristol Tennessee; one brother, H.B. "Bob" Barbrey, Belews Creek, N.C.; two grandchildren, Aaron Barbrey and Bryan Barbrey; special friend, Elsie Gross, Marion; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday from the Bradley's Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Mike Sage officiating. Interment will follow in the Wassum Cemetery, with military honors being rendered by the Francis Marion VFW Post 4667. Bennett GRUNDY -- Jimmy (Jim) Vernon Bennett, 56 years of age, passed away Sunday, Aug. 10, 2003, at Lewis Gale Hospital, Salem, Va., following a brief illness. Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of Mrs. Pauline Linkous Bennett, Vansant, Va., and the late James Vernon Bennett. He had been a resident of Buchanan County most of his life and was of the Baptist faith. He served in the U.S. Army from 1965 through 1970. He was a security officer for Securitas U.S.A. Mr. Bennett is survived by his former wife, Ernestine Bennett, Roanoke; one daughter, Veronica Jean Bennett, Roanoke; one son, Earl Wayne Bennett, Mechanicsburg, Pa.; one son-in-law, George A. Crockett, Roanoke; one sister, Judy Bennett Owens, Brown City, Mich.; one brother, Paul Richard Bennett, Vansant, Va.; and two grandchildren, Monica Nicole Bennett, Roanoke, and Christopher Shannon Bennett, Honaker. Grundy Funeral Home of Grundy is in charge of all arrangements. Helen Earlene Britt Helen Earlene Britt, age 51, Johnson City, died Friday, Aug. 8, 2003, at her residence following a brief illness. Mrs. Britt was a native of Johnson City and the daughter of the late Creed and Opal Harper. She was employed by Ryan’s Restaurant in Johnson City. Mrs. Britt was a member of Sinking Creek Baptist Church. She attended school in Johnson City and was a graduate of East Tennessee State University. Survivors include her husband, Raymond Britt; two sons, Ralph Allen Little and Jason Lawrence Little, both of Johnson City; one brother, Ray Bradley; one granddaughter, Kami Rose Little. Memorial services for Helen Earlene Britt will be held Thursday, Aug. 14, 2003, at 4:00 p.m. at Central Baptist Church with Dr. Ronald Murray officiating. There will be no visitation. Wayne L. Chilcote CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Wayne L. Chilcote died on Aug. 11, 2003. Born in Fort Oglethorpe, Ga., he was the son of the Rev. Thomas F. Chilcote and Margaret Mosser Chilcote of Kingsport. He was a graduate of the University of Tennessee and received master's degrees from East Tennessee State University and the University of South Carolina. He was a professor of English and geography at the University of South Carolina, Salkehatchie campus. He was chair of the Division of Humanities and chair of the Salkehatchie Faculty Organization. Professor Chilcote held numerous positions in the University of South Carolina Regional Campuses Faculty Senate. Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his wife, Bernadette Whitaker Chilcote; three daughters, Deborah C. Crawford of Knoxville and Emma Jane Chilcote and Hannah Elizabeth Chicote, both of Charleston; and one sister, Deborah C. Wallace of Kingsport. Funeral Mass will be held Thursday in Charleston. Combs Funeral Service is serving the family of Mrs. Farmer. Benjamin Goodman Sr. Dr. Benjamin Warren Goodman Sr., son of A. H. Goodman and Hazy Ann Randolph Goodman, died Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2003. Born Sept. 23, 1920, in Bristol Tennessee, Dr. Goodman was a graduate of Lenoir Rhyne College and the University of Tennessee School of Medicine. He was an aviator and flight surgeon during World War II and the Korean conflict. He came to Hickory as a flight instructor and married Peggy Stewart Whitener in 1945. Dr. Goodman practiced family and sports medicine in Hickory for 45 years (1954- 1999), founding the Medical Arts Clinic in 1960. Dr. Goodman was an avid fan of General Electric and Lenoir Rhyne football. He served as GE plant physician from its inception in 1955 until the Hickory plant closed. Dr. Goodman was the team physician for Lenoir Rhyne's football program from 1954 until 1989, traveling with his wife to all the games. He was inducted into the LR Sports Hall of Fame in 1985. He was awarded the college's Distinguished Service Award (1963), was named Outstanding Alumnus twice and received the Trustee Award (1984). Life member and director of the Piedmont Education Foundation, Dr. Goodman was chairman of the Sports Hall of Fame Committee for 30 years (1970-2000). Dr. Goodman was active in the American Red Cross, American Cancer Society, North Carolina Society of Industrial Medicine and the North Carolina Medical Society. He practiced medicine at both Catawba Valley Medical Center and Frye Regional Medical Center. For his life of medical service, Dr. Goodman was awarded the North Carolina Family Practitioner of the Year Award in 1990 by the North Carolina Academy of Family Physicians. In addition to his accomplishments within his profession, Dr. Goodman was also proud of his antique car collection, his hole-in-one at Catawba Springs and at Palm Springs Desert. Surviving Dr. Goodman are his wife of 58 years, Peggy; four children, Dr. Benjamin W. Goodman Jr., William Hardin Goodman, Kathryn Goodman Lehman and Ann R. Goodman; as well as six grandchildren. The family will receive at the Goodman's residence Wednesday evening. He was born in Smyth County to the late Abram Harrington and Josie Testerman Lowe and was self-employed as a contractor. He was a member of the St. Clair's Creek Regular Baptist Church. A lifelong resident of Dickenson County, he was the son of the late Creed and Grace Meade Mullins, and was a U.S. Army veteran. Surviving are a brother, Lloyd Shelton Mullins, Clintwood; sister, Dora Selina Browning, Clintwood; and many nieces and nephews also survive. Graveside services for Raydon M. Mullins will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Thursday from the Creed Mullins Family Cemetery, with VFW Post 8979, DAV Chapter 35 and American Legion Post 227 conducting military graveside honors. Born Sept. 13, 1912, at Burkes Garden, she was a daughter of the late William H. and Caldonia Edwards Repass. She was a member of the Burkes Garden Central Lutheran Church and a member of the Burkes Garden Homemakers Club. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Rhudy; four sisters, Edith Bourne, Gladys Jones, May Crabtree and Grace Sparks; and six brothers, John, Jim, Harve, George, Andy and Sidney Repass. Survivors include two sons: Bill J. He was a retired coal miner, having worked for Lebo Mining Co., a former employee of the U.S. Forestry Dept., a veteran of the Korean conflict serving in the U.S. Army, a member of the Beverly Hills Tabernacle and an avid outdoorsman. Orville Preston Trivette Sr., age 91, of 271 Emmett Way, went home to be with Jesus Monday, Aug. 11, 2003, at the VAMC. He was born in Bristol Tennessee on Feb. 19, 1912, to the late William Clayburn Trivette and Nannie Elizabeth Manuel Trivette. He was retired from Edmond Bros. Supply Co., and was a veteran of World War II. He was a devout Christian and servant of the Lord for over 50 years, and served as pastor of several churches. He was a loving husband, father and a very special papaw. He is preceded in death by a great granddaughter, Ciara Katlyn Woods; three sisters; and two brothers. He is survived by his wife, Goldie V. Trivette. Also surviving: daughters: Mary Elizabeth Taylor and husband, Alvin; Hazel Carrier and husband, Billy; Audrey Woods and husband, Buddy; and Rebecca Lowe and husband, Hal; sons: Orville Trivette Jr. and wife, Hazel; and John William and wife, Linda; sister, Nina Elmore; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great- grandchildren.
