Blaylock BRISTOL, Va. -- Gordon Wayne Blaylock, 66, died Sunday, August 17, 2003, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was born in Bristol, a son of the late Gordon and Anna Leona Stout Blaylock, and lived in Michigan for several years before returning to Bristol in 1992. He was a member of the Ironworkers Local 25 of Novi, Mich., and attended Shiloh Baptist Church of Bristol Virginia. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Rosie Blaylock, and a brother, Jack Robert Blaylock. Survivors include his wife, Rebecca "Becky" Blaylock; a son, Barrett Blaylock, his wife Carrie and their daughter, Erin, of Marysville, Mich.; a daughter, Alayne Williams, her husband Michael and their children, Haley, Nathan and Jonathan, of Oxford, Mich.; and their youngest son, Gwyn Blaylock and his wife, Stephanie, of Bay City, Mich.; a stepdaughter, Kay Cassell, her husband Brad and children, Kelly and Cody Mangum, of Abingdon; a stepson, Kevin Stiltner and his children, Kristopher and Anthony, of Bristol Tennessee; three sisters, Nettlea Hyatt and Marie Leonard, both of Lansing, Mich., and Bernice Riffey of Dayton, Ohio; one brother, Jerry Blaylock of Juneau, Alaska, and several nieces and nephews. Sims MARION -- Ralph M. Sims, age 78, died Monday, August 18, 2003, at his home in Marion. Survivors and funeral arrangements will be announced later by Seaver-Brown Funeral Service. Jewell Garland Smith ABINGDON -- Mrs. Jewell Garland "Judy" Smith, wife of Jack Smith, chairman of the board of Food City, died Sunday, Aug. 17, 2003, at her home. She was 79. She was born and raised in Mitchell County, N.C., the daughter of the late Russell Leroy and Daisy Marie Garland. After graduating from high school, she attended Lees-McRae College and graduated from the University of Maryland School of Nursing. She worked at Johns-Hopkins Hospital in the "Blue Baby" Program. She married her husband on Sept. 20, 1947, in the chapel of the U.S. Naval Academy, where he was a midshipman. For the next several years, Judy served as a Navy wife until the family moved to Grundy in 1954. While in Grundy, she worked as a nurse at Grundy Hospital and later worked as owner/manager of Alison's Jewelry. In 1996, she retired to the South Holston Lake community of Abingdon. "Her home was a gathering place in the community for all the kids,'' said her son, Steve Smith. "She was a second mom to the community kids. She never missed a little league game and never missed a high school game while her children were in school. She was the woman behind the man and Dad says his success was because of her supporting him." In addition to her husband, Mrs. Smith is survived by one son and daughter-in- law, Steve and Debbie Smith of Abingdon; two daughters and sons-in-law, Stephanie and Frank David of Richlands and Sharon and Thomas Hembree of Abingdon; one brother, Claude Garland of Westminster, Md.; two sisters, Wilma Watts of Annapolis, Md., and Ione Saylor of Westminster, and six grandchildren, Alison David, Joshua David, Drew Hembree, Katie Smith, Melanie Hembree and Chloe Smith. The funeral service will be conducted Wednesday, August 20, 2003, at 1 p.m. at the Farris Funeral Service branch facility on the grounds of Forest Hills Memory Gardens, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon. The Rev. Mike Rife will officiate. Entombment will follow in the Colonial Chapel Mausoleum at Forest Hills. Honorary pallbearers will be Tom Watts, Butch Garland, Keith Saylor, Greg Saylor, Joshua David, Drew Hembree and Dr. Emory Robinette. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6-9 p.m. at the branch facility of Farris Funeral Service at Forest Hills. Patricia Teter Vicars MARION -- Patricia Teter (Pat) Vicars, age 70, died Monday, August 18, 2003, in Smyth County Community Hospital. Wright Dorothy Thomas Wright, age 90, a former resident of 417 Bluff City Highway, Bristol, Tenn., and a resident of Grand Court Retirement Community, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, August 16, 2003, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was the daughter of the late Ola J. and Mary Redwine Thomas and was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area. She was an employee of Parks Belk for 23 years and was a member of Anderson Street United Methodist Church. Ms. Wright also served in the Border City Eastern Star and the Twin City Rebecca Lodge 102 of Bristol Virginia. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence F. "Red" Wright, a son, Bobby Wright, who passed away August 1, 2003, and a grandson, Chad Matthew Atkins. Survivors include daughters, LaVerne Wright Lynch of Bristol Tennessee and DeAnna W. Atkins of Corryton, Tenn.; sisters, Eddie Mercer, Mary Sue Kerr, Gertrude Arnold and Wilma Vade Haga, all of Bristol Tennessee; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by three brothers. Graveside services will be held on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Glenwood Cemetery, with Rev. Jerry Fleenor officiating. Weaver Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Donald Ray Wyrick LEBANON -- Donald Ray Wyrick, 58, died Sunday August 17, 2003, in the Russell County Medical Center. Born October 8, 1944, in Smyth County, Va., a son of the late Buster Wyrick and Mary Bise Wyrick, he graduated from Rich Valley High School in 1961. He was a U.S. Army veteran and was honorably discharged in 1971. Survivors include his wife, Linda Wyrick; a daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn Steele and David Steele, Lebanon; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Ronnie Wyrick and Amanda Wyrick and Tim Taylor and Donna Taylor, all of Lebanon, and Mike Taylor, Nashville, Tenn.; one brother, Bobby Wyrick, Chilhowie; seven grandchildren, Eric Steele, Travis Steele, Brantley Wyrick, Kayla French, Casey Taylor, Cassie Taylor and Kensey Taylor; two great-grandchildren, Madison and Preston Steele, and his best canine friend, Chelsie. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 19, 2003, in Ketron Memorial Gardens, with Mr. Sam Glovier officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the Lebanon VFW Post 9864. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1 until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service. Those attending should meet at the funeral home to go in procession to the cemetery.
