Wolfgang Zahnke BIG STONE GAP, Va. -- Dr. Wolfgang Zahnke, M.D., our dear father, departed this world on Aug. 21, 2003. He was a beautiful person, totally giving of himself before thinking of his own needs. He worked 27 years at Lonesome Pine Hospital and was always there at a moment's notice. It was his life and his dedication. He was also a loving father to us, his three children, Coleen Kirsty, Serena (Lulu) and Kim. He gave us a world outlook on life and taught us to work hard and accomplish our goals. He stood firmly behind our dreams and helped guide us through difficult times. He was most loved grandpa "Pop" to Liarucha, Gareth and Ygraine, teaching them meticulously how to cook, fill the pond or whatever else they were interested in learning about. He was so close to them. Most of all, he was a wonderful husband to our mother, Fiona. He was her cornerstone and partner through almost 39 years of marriage. They have traveled the world together and had great dreams about what his retirement was going to bring them. She has loved him through thick and thin and this is a devastation like none other. We will all cherish our memories of him and his giving spirit. And these mountains will miss his footsteps upon them. He has left on this earth his wife, Fiona; his three children, Coleen Kirsty, Serena (Lulu) and Kim; his three grandchildren, Liarucha, Gareth and Ygraine; his sister, Marlis (Liza); his nephew, Darius; his cousin, Madelein, and a host of relatives and friends around the world and especially in this community of Big Stone Gap and Wise County. A memorial service will be held 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2003, at Christ Episcopal Church on Clinton Avenue in Big Stone Gap. Rev. Raymond Moore will officiate. We hope that all who knew and loved this beautiful person would come to mourn his passing.
