She was a daughter of the late Bob and Annabell Lambert and was a life-long resident of Bristol. She was a member of Reynolds United Methodist Church and the Order of Eastern Star. Mrs. Amburn is survived by her son, Bill Amburn and wife Linda of Bristol Virginia; four grandchildren, Terri Thompson and her husband Trey of Knoxville, Tenn., Scott Amburn and his wife Kim of Kingsport and Tony and David Anderson, both of Bristol Virginia; a great-grandson, Caleb Amburn of Kingsport; a sister- in-law, Ella Bryant of Knoxville, and several nieces and nephews. Ruth Artrip CLEVELAND, Va. -- Ruth Artrip, 97, departed this life on Sunday, Aug. 14, 2003, at Hummingbird Retirement Villa in Lebanon. Born on April 10, 1906, in Russell County, Va., she was the daughter of the late Sam and Bell Maxfield and was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was a member of Weaver Creek Baptist Church for many years and a homemaker who dearly loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and each of them loved her dearly. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Artrip, who passed away in 1946; one sister; three brothers; two daughters, Idana Bullock and Wynevia Gregston, and three sons, Armond Artrip, Marion Artrip and Herman Lester (Blue) Artrip. Survivors include a son, Samuel Clyde (Choke) Artrip and wife Phyllis of Cleveland; daughters, Eura Vance and husband Farley and Rosa Collius and husband Paul, all of Cleveland; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one great- great-grandson; daughter-in-law, Lillian Artrip of Norton, and numerous nieces and nephews also survive. Grandsons and great-grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2003, at 1 p.m. at Owens Funeral Service Chapel, with Rev. Rick Smith and Rev. Ashby BRISTOL, Tenn. -- James A. Ashby, age 78, of 105 Walnut Road, went to be with the Lord Monday, Aug. 25, 2003, at his residence. Mr. Ashby was born on February 2, 1925, in Richmond, a son of the late Joseph Andrew and Virginia Keister Ashby. Mr. Ashby had lived most of his life in the Bristol area, and was retired from Raytheon with over 40 years of service. Mr. Ashby was a member of the Fellowship Chapel. He was also a veteran, having served with the Army during World War II, where he received the following decorations and citations, American Theatre Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal with Two Bronze Service Stars, Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. Mr. Ashby is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, James A. Ashby Jr. and wife Donna of Knoxville; one daughter, Linda Martin of Bristol Tennessee; two stepdaughters, Nancy Robbins and husband Bill of Bluff City and Peggy Dishner and husband James of Bristol Tennessee; five grandchildren; two step- granddaughters; one sister, Esther King of Kingsport, and several nieces and nephews. She was born in Marion County, West Virginia, a daughter of the late Frank and Anna Billick Less, and was preceded in death by her childhood sweetheart and first husband, Joseph McDowell, second husband, Burley Campbell, and brother, Daniel Less. Mrs. Campbell most recently worked for Frontier Health. She was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan. She also had a passion for NASCAR, country music, fishing and especially traveling. Alfred Copenhaver WYTHEVILLE, Va. -- Alfred W. Copenhaver Sr., 87, passed away Monday, Aug. 25, 2003, at Asbury Place. Born on Oct. 30, 1915, he was the son of the late Pepper Kelly and Nannie Riggle Copenhaver. Alfred was a faithful member of St. Paul United Methodist Church for 58 years. He was a devoted member of the Wytheville Lions Club for 50 years and was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellow Award (the highest award given by Lions International Foundation). As a member, he particularly enjoyed his annual assignment at the Lions Club Carnival as the balloon man. During his early retirement years, Alfred and his wife Mamie toured the United States with the Avion Trailer Travelcade. He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Mamie Hedrick Copenhaver, and his daughter, Linda Copenhaver Carpenter. She was active in the Sullivan County Republican Organization and was a member of Sulpher Springs United Methodist Church. Her parents, Rev. Hagood, 103, of 2209 Highway 126, died Monday, Aug. 25, 2003, at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was a native of Hawkins County, Tenn., and moved to Blountville in 1925. He was a son of the late James Wesley and Annie McCracken Hagood. He married Nannie Kate Willis Hagood on June 9, 1928. Mr. Hagood was a state supervisor of roads for Sullivan County and supervisor of maintenance of Sullivan County schools for 42 years. He was a member of Sullivan County Retired Teachers Association, Modern Woodmen and a very active member of Blountville United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hagood was preceded in death by his wife, Nannie Kate Willis Hagood; an infant son, Hobart Dail Hagood; a sister, Maude Hagood Looney; four brothers, Kyle, Charlie, Walter and Conner Hagood, and several nieces and nephews. He is survived by a daughter, Margaret Louise Hagood (Mrs. J. Sanders BRISTOL, Tenn. -- Bertie Curry Sanders, 93, died Aug. 22, 2003, at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was active in the First Baptist Church and local civic clubs in Eupora, Miss. She was preceded in death by her husband, John L. Sanders. Born and raised in Bluff City, he was a son of the late James A. and Viola Millard Sharp and lived most of his life in Johnson City. Lonnie was a member of Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church, where he was actively involved in many areas. Among his many interests were the United Emmaus Community, Johnson City Civitan Club, American Legion and the Gideons International. He served in the Army-Air Force and retired from Burlington Industries after 38 years of service. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Lester Sharp, Fletcher Sharp, Cleze Sharp and Lester Sharpe Jr. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Grace Keys Sharpe; son and daughter-in- law, E. Fred and Jane Sharpe, Pine Mountain, Ga.; daughters and sons-in-law, Patsy and George Horney, Bristol Virginia, Phyllis and Butch Buchanan, Greer, S.C., and Pam and Dave Erwin, Greenville, S.C.; grandchildren, Sally McNamee, Jenny Sharpe, Ben and Betsy Buchanan and Lydia and Marcus Erwin; five great- grandchildren; sisters, Ida Jenkins, Knoxville, and Leola Cox, Bluff City, and several nieces and nephews. Louis Shuman ABINGDON -- Mr. Louis Shuman, a well-known Abingdon business and civic leader, died at his home Friday, Aug. 22, 2003. His wife, Verbeth Shuman, preceded him in death. He was born in New York City on Aug. 18, 1915, and was a graduate of St. Johns University and New York Law School. He and his wife moved from New York City in 1950 after he was a member of the Army Air Corps during World War II, serving in the South Pacific Theatre. He was the manager of the Abingdon Harwood Company for over 35 years. He served on the Abingdon Town Council, Washington County and Abingdon Planning Commissions and the Washington County Board of Supervisors. Mr. Shuman had served as president of the Abingdon Rotary Club, William King PTA, Virginia Highlands Festival and several other civic organizations. He was a member of the B'Nai Sholom and was the former president of the congregation. He loved sports, discussing current affairs, but especially his family and community. Survivors include a daughter, Leslie Kronz and husband Dr. Fred Kronz of Austin, Texas; a son, Kenny Shuman and wife Doris Clendenen Shuman of Abingdon; a much- beloved granddaughter, Sidney Adele Clendenen Shuman of Abingdon, and a brother, Max Shuman of New York. Dorothy Stewart NORTON -- Dorothy "Ma Poo" Stewart, 87, died Sunday, Aug. 24, 2003, in Mullins Adult Home, Norton. She was a member of the Norton Presbyterian Church and former member of Church of God in Norton. She was a former employee of Curtiss Wright Aircraft Manufacturing, Columbus, Ohio, during World War II. She was a certified beautician, having worked from her home. She was an active member of the J.I. Burton Band Boosters and a volunteer at Park Place Group Home. She was preceded in death by her husband, William R. Joseph Roy White BRISTOL, Va. -- Joseph (Joey) Roy White, 41, formerly from Bluefield, Va., died Saturday, Aug. 23, 2003, in a Bristol hospital. He was born in Iaeger, W.Va., and was the son of Eugene P. White and Mary F. Earls White of Bluefield, Va. Joey was a member of the Graham Christian Church in Bluefield, and attended church at Surburban Christian Church in Bristol Virginia. He was employed by Norfolk & Southern Railroad. He was a member of the Air-Head Motorcycle Club in Abingdon, member of the BMW Motorcycle Riders Association, was a 1980 graduate of Graham High School and a graduate of Southwest Community College. He was preceded in death by a brother, Larry Eugene White.
