Mrs. Artrip, 97, departed this life on Sunday, Aug. 24, 2003, at Hummingbird Retirement Villa in Lebanon. James A. Ashby BRISTOL, Tenn. -- James A. Ashby, age 78, of 105 Walnut Road, went to be with the Lord Monday, Aug. 25, 2003, at his residence. Mr. Ashby was born on Feb. 2, 1925, in Richmond, a son of the late Joseph Andrew and Virginia Keister Ashby. Mr. Ashby had lived most of his life in the Bristol area, and was retired from Raytheon with over 40 years of service. Mr. Ashby was a member of the Fellowship Chapel. He was also a veteran, having served with the Army during World War II, where he received the following decorations and citations: American Theater Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. Mr. Ashby is survived by his wife of 34 years, Hazel Ashby; one son and daughter-in-law, James A. Ashby Jr. and wife Donna of Knoxville; one daughter, Linda Martin of Bristol Tennessee; two stepdaughters: Nancy Robbins and husband Bill of Bluff City; and Peggy Dishner and husband James of Bristol Tennessee; five grandchildren; two step-granddaughters; one sister, Esther King of Kingsport, and several nieces and nephews. Born in Sugar Hill, Va., she was the daughter of the late Rev. George A. Chocklett and Virginia Yeatts Chocklett. Mrs. Bailey was the wife of the late Rev. David L. Bailey Sr. She served with him in Kentucky mission work under the Kentucky Baptist Board and the Home Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. She also worked alongside him in other churches he served as pastor in Appomattox County, Newport News, Norton, Tazewell and Gladys, where she was a member of Kedron Baptist Church. Mrs. Bailey served as Baptist Women's Missionary Union superintendent in two associations in Virginia and one in Kentucky. She is survived by one daughter, Betty Rackley of Moseley, Va., and her husband, Dr. Joel A. Rackley; two sons, Dr. David L. Bailey Jr., his wife, the Rev. Judith B. Bailey of Richmond and Dr. Robert W. Bailey and his wife, Mary Frances of Birmingham; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Bailey's last work before retirement was executive director of the Lynchburg Volunteer Bureau, 1968-1979. Civic Leaders of America conferred the 1968 National Award on her. She was selected to appear in the 1971 edition of "Personalities of the South." Earlier in her career, she had taught school in the Norton City School System and had served as a medical assistant and church secretary. She was active in civic and community affairs throughout her lifetime. The service will be Thursday 11 a.m. at Kedron Baptist Church, Gladys. The Rev. W. Shelton Miles III, pastor of First Baptist Church, Republican Grove, will officiate, assisted by Mrs. Bailey's sons and daughter. Burial will be in the Kedron Baptist Church Cemetery. Boyers BRISTOL, Tenn. -- Dorothy E. Boyers, age 87, formerly of 400 Shelby St., Apt. 201, died Saturday, Aug. 23, 2003, at The Cambridge House. A native of Cincinnati, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Jessie Sturgeon Omer. Mrs. Boyers was a member of St. Anne's Church. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Anthony Earl Boyers Sr.; four daughters; and two grandsons. Survivors include a daughter, Betty Smith of Dayton, Ohio; a son, Anthony Boyers Jr. of Cincinnati; three sisters: Rose of Cleveland, Ohio; Catherine of California; and Ruth Ann of Newport, Ky.; seven grandchildren; 11 great- grandchildren; four great-great-granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews. Irene Brown BRISTOL, Tenn. -- Rhoda Irene Brown, age 78, 325 Broyles Lane, died Monday, Aug. 25, 2003, in Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was a native of Sullivan County, daughter of the late James Robert and Katherine Jones Brown. She lived most of her life in Bristol area and was a retired teacher with Bristol Virginia School System, with approximately 37 years of service. She was a member of Bristol Virginia Retired Teachers Association, a member of Bellmont Presbyterian Church and a member of Virginia Asher Bible Council, where she served as national Bible teacher of that organization. She was a graduate of King College, was secretary of the Board of Directors of Graham Bible College, where she was director of academic affairs, was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Honor Society, a member of the Graham Bible College Ladies Auxiliary and a member of OMC Ladies Bible study group. She was preceded in death by a brother, James H. Brown. He was a native of Hawkins County, Tenn., and moved to Blountville in 1925. He was a son of the late James Wesley and Annie McCracken Hagood. He married Nannie Kate Willis Hagood on June 9, 1928. Mr. Hagood was a state supervisor of roads for Sullivan County and supervisor of maintenance of Sullivan County schools for 42 years. He was a member of Sullivan County Retired Teachers Association, Modern Woodmen and a very active member of Blountville United Methodist Church. She was a daughter of the late John W. and Bertha E. Eiklor. She was a retired registered nurse at the former Bristol Memorial Hospital. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. Mrs. Stivers is survived by a daughter, Linda Fuller of Bristol Tennessee; a brother, John W. Eiklor Jr. and wife, Dee, of Gray, Tenn.; two grandsons, Wayne and Mark Fuller; and three great-grandchildren, Hayley, Jarrett and Emily Fuller. The funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, at the graveside in Glenwood Cemetery, with Rev. Amy Y. Holmes officiating. Stone, age 47, of 453 New Camp Ridge Road, passed away Monday, Aug. 25, 2003, at her residence. Mrs. Stone was born on Oct. 28, 1955, in Phoenix City, Ala. She had lived in the Bristol area for the past 18 years, was a LPN care giver at Hassinger Corporation, and was of the Baptist faith. Mrs. Stone was preceded in death by her father, Gene Marshall Roberson. Mrs. Stone is survived by: her husband, Garland F. Stone Sr.; her children, Tamara D. Sutherland, age 68, 194 Bob Hays Road, died Monday, Aug. 25, 2003, at Johnson City Medical Center. A native of Russell County, Va., he was the son of the late Evadene Sutherland. "Buddy" Wagner Jr., 60, of 101 16th St., died Monday, Aug. 25, 2003, at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was born in Bristol Virginia, a son of Louise Trinkle Wagner and the late Melvin D. "Shorty" Wagner Sr. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and worked many years in the building construction industry. He is survived by his mother, Louise Trinkle Wagner of the home; his sister, Joyce Wagner Rife of Blountville; his brother, Dennis L. Wagner and wife, Patty, of Knoxville; three nieces: Shannon Rollins and husband, Rick; and Ashley and Taylor Wagner.
