He was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area. He was born March 5, 1924, and was a son of the late Edward Dean and Cynthia Mitchell Bentley. He was a retired employee with Ross Prestressed Concrete Company with 15 years of service. He was a U.S. Army veteran, was a member of the VFW and the American Legion. He was a good Christian man and loved his family dearly. He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Elkins Bentley. Survivors include: four daughters: Laurel Smith, Bristol Tennessee; Sue Edwards, Blountville; Darlene Hale, Bluff City; and Ruth Williams, Kingsport; three sons: Larry Bentley, Bluff City; Charles Bentley, Bristol Tennessee; and Jason Bentley, Bristol Tennessee; three brothers: Bob Bentley, Baltimore; Bud Bentley, Bloxon, Va., and Lee Bentley, Bristol Tennessee; 22 grandchildren; 34 great- grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, 2003, at the Rooty Branch Cemetery, with Pastor Wayne Lambert officiating with military honors conducted by the VFW Patton-Crosswhite Post 6975 of Bristol. Jeffrey Lee Byrd KINGSPORT -- Jeffrey Lee Byrd, age 39, 701 Rock Springs Road, went to be with the Lord, Sunday, Aug. 31, 2003, in a plane crash in Blountville. Jeffrey was a flight instructor and died doing what he had loved all his life. He attained a pilot's license at 15 and a half years of age, even before obtaining his driver's license. Jeffrey was a native of Galax, Va., and a son of Billy Lee Byrd, Erwin and Carol Haynes Campbell, Johnson City. He was a pilot and flight instructor, a former Sullivan County deputy and a member of the National Pilot Association. Jeffrey was a member of Celebration Church, Kingsport. He attended John Battle High School, where he lettered in football and basketball, and was a graduate of Bristol College. He had also obtained numerous certifications in pilot instruction. Jeffrey enjoyed coaching, having coached T-ball and Little League baseball. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Sanders and Haley Haynes; and his paternal grandparents, Clifford and Gladys Byrd, all of Fries, Va. In addition to his parents, Jeffrey is survived by his wife, Donna Galloway Byrd of the home; two sons, Jared Byrd and Seth Byrd, Bluff City; one stepson, Zachary Stamper of the home; one sister, Roxanne Yount, Elizabethton; three stepbrothers: Toby Sells, Atlanta; Billy Sells, Murfreesboro; and Craig Campbell, Johnson City; one stepsister, Beth Cole, Knoxville; his stepfather, Sid Campbell, Johnson City and his stepmother, Belle Byrd, Erwin; sister-in-law, Mitzi Sturgill, Kingsport; mother-in-law, Molly Galloway, Kingsport; special niece, Ashley Wilson; and special nephews, Shane Cloud and Jessip Ward; and several other nieces and nephews. Cahill, age 72, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2003. He was a member of the Saltville Volunteer Fire Department, the Marion VFW and a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean conflict. He was an employee of the Smyth County School System. Mr. Cahill was preceded in death by his parents, William Jennings Cahill and Bert "Granny" Keesee. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. Childress BREAKS, Va. -- Barbara Davis Smith Childress, 55 years of age, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2003. Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Jessie and Berchie Lee Davis. She was a life-long resident of Buchanan County and a member of Bartlick Freewill Baptist Church. She was a graduate of Buchanan County Vocational School and was owner and operator of Barbara's Beauty Shop. Mrs. Childress is survived by her husband, Sammy Darrell Childress, Breaks. She is also survived by one son, Sidney Smith Jr., Big Rock, Va.; two stepdaughters, Cindy Richmond, Michigan, and Tammy Rose, Michigan; three stepsons: Mike Childress, Breaks; Jeff Childress, Georgia; and Wes Childress, Breaks; and one sister, Thelma King, Georgia. Marvin G. Collins MARION -- Marvin G. Collins, age 59, died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2003, in the Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion. Survivors and funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Bradley's Funeral Home of Marion. Lillian B. Crane Lillian B. Crane, 80, died Sept. 3, 2003. Born in Sandy Ridge, Va., a daughter of the late Jahile and Mary Ellen Breeding, she worked as a legal secretary and with an insurance broker for more than 50 years in Grundy. She was an active member of Grundy Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday School and took care of others' needs throughout the community. She was also an active member of the Eastern Star in Grundy since the 1950's. In 1993, she and her husband moved to Rocky Mount, where she was an active member of Franklin Heights Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband of 58 years, Percy V. Crane; three chosen children: Jerry Crane of South Carolina; Lehan Crane of Newport News; and Cynthia Mink of Rocky Mount; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sister, Alcie Keen of Roanoke; brother, Joe Breeding of Kingsport; and many nieces and nephews. James William Fern PINEY FLATS -- James William "Jimmy" Fern, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2003, in the Bristol Regional Medical Center. A lifelong resident of the Bristol area, he was a truck driver and a member of the New Life Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and was preceded in death by his mother, Jennie Lou Boone Fern. Survivors include: wife of 27 years, Judy Callahan Fern; son, Jamie Fern; three daughters, Teresa Morris, Toni Montoya and Jeri Whitaker; father, James S. Lillie Gantt Lillie "Bunny" Gantt, age 87, died peacefully on Sunday, Aug. 31, 2003, in the loving care of her caregiver, Glenda Reynolds. Mrs. Gantt was preceded in death by her husband, Pickens Allison Gantt; her mother, Eva Wilson; sister, Mary Blake; and son-in-law, Dr. Roger Seklecki. Although born in Winder, Ga., she spent her formative years in Rockmart, Ga., where she graduated from high school. After working in the infirmary at Goodyear, she felt the call to serve her country and joined the Women's Army Corps and was stationed at Fort Oglethorpe, Ga. She attained the position of staff sergeant. It was while in service that she meet her husband, Pickens Gantt, and they were married in the chapel at Fort Oglethorpe. She and her husband settled in Greenville, Ga., where they raised their children. Mrs. Gantt joined the Department of Agriculture, where she served in the ASCS division for 24 years, retiring in 1973. She was a dedicated member of the Greenville Baptist Church, where she had served as a Sunday School teacher and Youth Choir director. She was a member of the Women's Missionary Union, through which she gave countless hours of voluntary service to the community. She was a member of the American Legion, where she served for several years as the state child welfare chairman. She was a member of the local garden club and served many years as a hospital volunteer at West Georgia Health Systems. She is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Fred Durand of LaGrange, Ga., and daughter, Sue Seklecki of Augusta, Ga.; son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Pickens II and Dian Gantt of Bristol Tennessee; brother, William Albert Wilson of Molena, Ga.; 16 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday from the Greenville Baptist Church, Greenville, Ga., with the Reverend Jonathan Porter officiating. Hudson PRINCETON, W.Va. -- Mr. William Milton Hudson, 91, of the Ridge Care Facility, Hall Ridge Road, formerly of Bristol, died peacefully early Thursday morning, Sept. 4, 2003, at his residence. Born Aug. 27, 1912, at Bristol, he was the son of the late Joseph E. and Goldie L. Kennedy Hudson. He graduated from Virginia High School in Bristol and from electrical school in Chicago. For more than 30 years, Mr. Hudson was employed by the Bristol Virginia Utility Board. He was a member of the AF&AM Masonic Lodge in Bristol with membership over 50 years. Mr. Hudson was an avid Virginia Tech supporter and enjoyed helping other people as a handy person for odd and ins. Mr. Hudson moved to Princeton in August 1997. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys R. Hudson, along with two sisters, Lorraine Bailey and Mary Lou Chandler. She was a 1980 graduate of Grundy High School, a graduate of Southwest Virginia Community College, with an associate's degree in business management and accounting, was of the Church of God faith, a supervisor for Travelosity Travel Agency, Clintwood, and a loving mother, daughter, sister, aunt and friend. In addition to her father, Lennis Keene, she was preceded in death by her husband, Steve Ragen; her maternal grandparents, Everett and Gracie Rowe; and her paternal grandparents, Oliver and Vertie Keene. Louise Rutherford HONAKER -- Mrs. Louise Elizabeth Jamison Rutherford, age 91, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2003, at her home. Born Oct. 1, 1911, in Buchanan County, Va., she was a daughter of the late Henry Thomas and Maggie Messick Jamison. She had spent the majority of her life in the area and was a graduate of Richlands High School and Radford Teachers College. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Honaker, the Missionary Society of the First United Methodist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star of Honaker and Richlands. She had served as a board member of the Appalachian Agency of Senior Citizens, attended Finney Senior Citizens, was a member of Lake Bonaventure Country Club and was a former member of Honaker Garden Club and Honaker Bridge Club. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harry T. Rutherford Sr.; three sisters; five brothers; and one grandson, William Luther Compton. In her generation, she was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law: Margaret and Delano Compton of Honaker; and Midge and Randel Jones of Greenville, S.C.; two sons and daughters- -in-law: Harry Jr. and Yvonne Rutherford of Honaker; and William and Kaye Rutherford of Swords Creek, Va.; 10 grandchildren; two grandsons-in-law; one granddaughter-in-law; three great-grandchildren; and loving caregivers, Jo Ann Jamison, Jean Perkins, Carol Bird, Janice Edwards and RCMC Home Health and Hospice staff also survive. Mr. Trierweiler, age 85, of Route 2, passed away Friday, Aug. 29, 2003, at Heritage Hall Health Care in Clintwood. Haysi Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Mildred Wassum Tripp MARION -- Mildred Wassum Tripp, age 72, died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2003, in Smyth County Community Hospital. She is survived by two sons and one daughter-in-law, Larry Tripp of Marion and Terry and Marsha Tripp of Charlotte, N.C., along with one grandson, Davis Prescott Tripp of Charlotte, N.C.; one aunt, Frances Prater of Marion; and many friends also survive. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Sept. 6, 2003, at 11:00 a.m. at Seaver- Brown Chapel, with Rev. Frank Bauman and Rev. Donna Hester officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery, Marion. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel. Gaynell Wicks RAVEN, Va. -- Mrs. Gaynell Wicks, age 59, of the Mill Creek section, passed away Thursday, Sept. 4, 2003, at her home following a brief illness.
