Acts 17:26 The life of Fernando Chavez-Perez, 42, who passed away on Aug. 30, 2003, will be celebrated with a memorial service at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 13, 2003, at Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church in downtown Johnson City. Rev. Stephen Burkhart will officiate with music by Eric Hicks. Mr. Chavez was originally from Mexico City, having lived in Johnson City since 1995. He earned an undergraduate degree in library science from the University of Mexico and a master's degree in microbiology from the University of Toluca. He had been employed as an environmental engineer and in industrial management in Mexico before coming to the United States. He had studied at Rockefeller University in New York City. He often interpreted for organizations assisting Hispanics and tutored students learning English. He had worked in an area call center and was employed by Citi Commerce Solutions of Gray. Mr. Chavez was preceded in death by his mother and older brother, Gorge, of Mexico City. He is survived by his sisters, Laura, Gloria, Elizabeth and Carmen; a younger brother, Eduardo; and several nieces and nephews, also of Mexico City. Locally, he is survived by friends in the Tri-Cities, including a good friend, Jim Thayer Jr. Mr. Chavez was an avid reader and often engaged in lively discussions. He was literate in five languages. He often traveled and enjoyed hiking and bicycling in the mountains. He greatly appreciated the people and culture of East Tennessee, often attending local festivals. Lacy was a 1926 graduate of Dickenson Memorial High School, postmaster of the Norland Post Office, (Camp Creek), from 1931 until 1943. He was a self-taught surveyor and merchant most of his life, with general stores in Camp Creek, Georges Fork and later in Clintwood as co-owner of the D & S Supermarket. Mr. Davis was the first general registrar for Dickenson County, and served as a deputy clerk for several years with former county clerk, Teddy Bailey. Lacy was preceded in death by his parents, Garland Bruce and Mary Alice Owens Davis; his brother, Virgil Davis; sister, Martha Davis; and an infant son, Lacy Ellis Davis Jr. A loving father, generous, fair, cheerful ... witty and optimistic. He met change with a smile and enthusiasm. Fred Mitchell BRISTOL, Va. -- Fred Neal Mitchell, M.D., 77, died Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2003, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was born Feb. 6, 1926, in Charlotte, N.C., a son of George J. Mitchell and Annie Griffin Mitchell, who preceded him in death as did two brothers, Dr. Joe E. Mitchell of Bristol Virginia, and Lt. Col. George J. Mitchell of San Diego. Dr. Mitchell graduated from Charlotte Central High School in 1943. He then attended The Citadel, after which he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II with service in the Okinawa Campaign. He received his bachelor of science degree from the University of The South in 1948, a master of arts degree from the University of Virginia in 1949, and a medical doctor degree in 1953. After an internship at Emory University, Dr. Mitchell trained in pediatrics and surgical cardiology at the University of Virginia. From 1959 until 1981, he practiced medicine in Charlotte. In 1981, he became associated with Beecham Laboratories in Bristol Tennessee, and later with SmithKline Beecham, from which he retired in 1991 as director of clinical research. Dr. Mitchell was author of numerous scientific papers and was a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics and various other medical organizations. In Charlotte, Dr. Mitchell served several terms as chief of pediatrics at Presbyterian and Mercy Hospitals and was a president of the Charlotte Pediatric Society. He served three terms as a trustee of the University of the South from the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina. He was a life long Episcopalian and served on the vestry of St. Martin's Episcopal Church in Charlotte and Emmanuel Church in Bristol Virginia. Dr. Mitchell is survived by his wife, Judith Lawrence Mitchell, of Bristol Virginia; two daughters: Anne Mitchell Vitale of Plantation, Fla.; and Jane Mitchell Baugh of West Simsbury, Conn.; a son, Fred Neal Mitchell Jr. of Bristol Virginia; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6 until 7 o'clock Thursday evening at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 700 Cumberland St., Bristol, Va. He was born in Rose Hill, Va., lived for many years in Keokee, Va., and had been a resident of Big Stone Gap since 1976.
