Lester Ward, 86, Piney Flats -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Helen Short Bowman LEBANON -- Helen Short Bowman, age 80, formerly of Burkes Garden, Va., died suddenly Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003, at her home. Born Oct. 24, 1922, at Red Ash, Va., she was a daughter of the late William B. and Millie Beavers Short. She was of the Methodist faith and attended Raven Methodist Church. Mrs. Bowman graduated from Richlands High School in 1940 and was a graduate of Bluefield Business College. She was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. After returning home from the Navy, she was employed at Pocahontas Fuel Company for a number of years as a bookkeeper for the company store. In 1950, she and her husband moved from Horsepen, Va., to Burkes Garden to assist in the operation of the family farm for 40 years. Mrs. Bowman moved to Lebanon after her husband's death in 1987. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred L. Bowman, infant son, Edward William Bowman, two sisters, Frances Whittaker and Doris Hadden, and one brother, Ralph L. Short. Survivors include two daughters, Karen Davis and husband Jack of Lebanon and Sandra Bowman of Marion; one brother, Harold W. Short and wife Charlotte of Cedar Bluff, Va.; two sisters, Maxine Whitt and husband George Harold of Swords Creek, Va., and Lucille Nichols of Worcester, Mass.; one grandson, Joseph Walker Davis of Greeneville, Tenn.; two brothers in-law, Bernard W. Bowman and wife Elizabeth of Burkes Garden and Charlie Bowman of Falls Mills, Va.; one sister in-law, Betty B. Patrick and husband Lowell of Falls Mills, and several nieces and nephews and several great-nieces and great-nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 21, 2003, at Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, Va., with the Rev. Paul T. Griffith officiating. Marie Gayne Franzen JOHNSON CITY ---- Marie Gayne Franzen, age 84, 2707 Avondale Dr., died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003, at the Johnson City Medical Center. Mrs. Franzen was a Cambridge, Mass., native and had lived in Johnson City for the past 25 years. She was the daughter of the late Loretta Haley and Clifton A. Gayne. Mrs. Franzen was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Johnson City. She was employed as a Civil Servant for the U.S. Air Force during World War II, and served the U.S. Department of State with her late husband Theodore Franzen Sr., who was a foreign service officer. The couple served in nine countries and eleven embassies and consulates during their foreign service careers. Marie was particularly interested in World War II history, and was a Charter Member of the World War II Memorial Society in Washington, D.C. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore Franzen Sr., and her brothers Clifton and Richard Gayne. Survivors include two sons, Theodore Thomas Franzone Jr. of San Francisco and Gayne Alexander Franzen and his wife Anne, Mojacar, Spain; one daughter, Pamela Marie Franzen Booth and her husband Joe Ward Booth, Johnson City; sister-in-law Barbara Gayne, Marblehead, Mass.; one granddaughter, Nicole Marie Draper, Charlotte, N.C., and several nieces and nephews. Ligon Mrs. Ethelyn Everett Ligon, 85, a resident of Mayview Convalescent Center, died Sept. 17, 2003. She was the daughter of Carrie and Thatch Everett, born in Perquimans County, N.C., Feb. 11, 1918. She spent her childhood in Edenton, N.C. Ethelyn later lived in San Antonio, Richmond and Bristol Virginia. She was a member of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church. She spent many hours making needlepoint kneeling cushions for the church. Mrs. Ligon is survived by her nephew, Edward E. Everett Jr. and wife Kay of Alpharetta, Ga.; niece, Blair Everett Hughes and husband John of Raleigh; great- nephew, Grant Parker Everett of Alpharetta, and sister-in-law, Ruby Everett Brown of Garner. She was preceded in death by her brother, Edward (Pete) E. Everett. Malesky NORTON -- Gaynelle Straight Malesky, 92, an author and long-time columnist for The Coalfield Progress, died Sept. 17, 2003, at Wellmont Holston Valley Hospital in Kingsport. Mrs. Malesky, a native of Marion County, W.Va., and the youngest of 11 children, graduated from West Virginia University in 1931. She then taught in the Marion County School System for five years. In the mid 1950s she started writing poetry. Her poem, "Watching My Father Climb a Hill," won first prize in the 1964 Florence Dickinson Stearns Memorial Prize Contest for the Poetry Society of Virginia. Another poem, "Bulldozer Unearths a Grave," was a second place winner in the 1960--61 American Association of University Women (AAUM) Writing Project. She served as chairperson of the poetry category for the Virginia Division of the AAUW 1963 Creative Writing Contest. Mrs. Malesky's collected poems were published in 1967 in "Green Autumn." She dedicated the collection to her father, who, she said, made her "autumn green with memories." "The Mouse Hunter, a West Virginia Memoir," which she wrote with some assistance from her son, was published in 1994 and was dedicated to her husband, Joe. In April, 1965, she began writing a column along with her dear friend and neighbor, Gladys Stallard, for Norton's, The Coalfield Progress, which was a staple in the newspaper for over 30 years. Her love for the mountains of southwestern Virginia showed clearly in her columns and she and Mrs. Stallard had a loyal following of readers. She was a member of the Cumberland Bird and Nature Club and participated in many annual winter bird counts. She also was a member of King College's Board of Governors. She served with the auxiliary of the St. Mary's Hospital in Norton and worked as a volunteer for over 25 years. She contributed more than five thousand hours in voluntary service for the auxiliary. Mrs. Malesky served on the Lonesome Pine Regional Library Board of Trustees from 1969 until 1973 and was chairperson from 1971 until 1973. She served as a member of the Library Building Committee from 1973-75. She considered her work on the Board of Trustees and on the Building Committee to be some of her most satisfying accomplishments and she was particularly proud of the new library. Mrs. Malesky was a long-time member of the Norton Presbyterian Church, where she served as both an elder and deacon, as well as teacher of the Women's Bible Class, for over 30 years. She was also a member of the Norton Literary Club and a member of the AAUW for over 50 years. She was married for more than 60 years to her best friend, Joseph S. Malesky, who preceded her in death in 1998. She is survived by her dear son, Lann A. Malesky and daughter-in-law Gara Vinson of Fairfax, Va.; two grandsons, Dr. Alvin Malesky, Providence, R.I., and Lowell Malesky and his wife Katie, Fairfax; a sister, Vada Wilson of Fairmont, W.Va., as well as numerous nieces, nephews and close friends. Louise Munsey BLAND, Va. -- Elnora Louise McSpadden Munsey, age 91, quietly departed this life on Sept. 15 to join family members who have gone before which include her husband, Olin M. Munsey, her parents, James and Annabelle McSpadden, her sisters, Florene Shelton and Jimps Mauck, and special sister-in-law, Clara McSpadden. Left to cherish her memory are a brother, Bill McSpadden of Chilhowie; her son and his wife, Bob and Betty K. of Bland; her daughters, Helen and husband Barclay Andrews of Lynchburg and Anne and husband Tom Caudle of Clemmons, N.C.; six grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and special friend and caregiver, Louise Elmore. Phillips JOHNSON CITY ---- Hubert E. Phillips, age 90, 1007 Spring St., died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003, in the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital. Mr. Phillips was a native of Olive Hill, N.C., and a son of the late Clarence and Laura Fuller Phillips. Mr. Phillips was a graduate of Olive Hill High School, and attended Berea College before graduating from Morehead State Teachers College. He also had received an award for squads man of the year. He retired from Thomas Abernathy Engineers where he worked in sales. Mr. Phillips was a member of Central Baptist Church. He was a member of the Masonic lodge of Johnson City. Mr. Phillips was also a longtime and charter member of the Johnson City Rescue Squad. In addition to his parents, Mr. Phillips was preceded in death by one brother, Mark Phillips, and one sister, Gail Phillips. Survivors include his wife, Nora Yelton Phillips of the home; one daughter, June Kyte and her husband Steve, Roanoke; one son, Tom Phillips and his wife Becky, Telford; three sisters, Goldie Willis, Fayetteville, N.C., Louise Walker, Olive Hill, Ky., and Mary Victor, Troy, Ohio; four grandchildren; four great- grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Lester Ward PINEY FLATS -- E. Lester Ward, 86, 238 Ward Road, died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003, at his residence. Mr. Ward was a native of Johnson County and had lived in Sullivan County most of his life. He was a son of the late Joseph and Laura Payne Ward. Mr. Ward was also preceded in death by his wife, Lelia Carr Ward, in 1999. He was a farmer, a retired Sullivan County deputy sheriff and the caretaker of Shell Cemetery for many years. Mr. Ward was a member of Piney Flats Baptist Church, the Fraternal Order of Police and the Tennessee/Mississippi Sheriff's Association. Survivors include two granddaughters, Leslie Miller, Bloomington, Ind., and Stacy Standbridge, Piney Flats, one brother, Homer Ward, Piney Flats, and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service for Mr. Ward will be conducted at 8 p.m. Friday from the Morris-Baker South Chapel. Dr. Allen Davis will officiate. Committal services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Shell Cemetery, Piney Flats. Family and friends are asked to assemble at the cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Jeff Standbridge, David Ward Jr., Charlton Ward, Mike Baker and other friends. Honorary pallbearers are E.A. Harmon and Earl Forrester.
