South, 70, Johnson City Michael Lester Stanley Sr., 36, Damascus -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Samuel Ezra Askins CLEVELAND, Va. -- Samuel Ezra Askins, 81, died suddenly Friday, Sept. 19, 2003, in the Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. Born Dec. 18, 1921, in Hopewell, Va., he was a son of the late Jerome P. Askins and Mary Blanche Gregory Askins and was the husband of the late Janette Breeding Askins. He grew up in Hopewell and Kingstree, S.C., and had lived in Russell County the past 50 years. Mr. Askins was a graduate of Clemson University, Clemson, S.C., and received his master's degree in Education from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. He was a retired school teacher, having taught math and science at Cleveland High School in Russell County for many years. He had also served as principal of Dante Elementary School in Russell County and Marriatt High School in King and Queen County, Va. During World War II, he served in the U. S. Army on a hospital ship which cared for solders wounded in the European theater. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his brother, James P. Askins, and three sisters, Nell Askins, Martha Askins and Mary Alcorn. Survivors include a daughter, Glenna Chansky, Alpharetta, Ga.; two sons, Samuel Askins Jr., Cleveland, and Cleve Askins, Springfield, Va.; a sister, Doris McDonald, Charleston, S.C.; five grandchildren, Amanda and Melissa Askins, Springfield, and Joshua, Elicia and Jeremy Chansky, Alpharetta, also several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 21, 2003, in the Finney Baptist Church, Finney, Va., with the Rev. Stephen Musick officiating. Burial will follow in Russell Memorial Cemetery in Lebanon. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends after 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, 2003, at the funeral home. Cossie Curtis Boggs BRISTOL, Va. -- Mr. Cossie Curtis Boggs, age 93, of 700 Dakota Road, died Sept. 18, 2003, at his home. He was born in Pound, Va., to the late Jarvey Boggs and Viola Cantrell Boggs. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Bernice Hash Boggs, two daughters, Loretta Boggs Morris and Brenda Boggs Risner, a sister, Dossie Boggs Craft, and two brothers, Forrester Boggs and Veldon Boggs. Mr. Boggs was a loving father, stepfather and grandfather to all of his family and a dear friend to many. He was a retired electrician after 45 years and was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. He was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include his wife, Estelle Hutton Boggs; a son, Wendell Boggs and wife Tana of Lincolnton, N.C.; a daughter, Joyce Mink and husband Frank of Abingdon; two sons-in-law, Bill Morris of Abingdon and Joel Risner of Chattanooga; three stepdaughters, Glemma Bocock and husband Marty of Columbia, S.C., Jean Honeycutt and husband Eddie and Jan Combs and husband Tom, all of Bristol; a stepson, Robert Martin of Beckley, W.Va.; two brothers, Berkley Boggs of Pound and Dallas Boggs of Florida; a sister, Janice Boggs Hamilton of Pound; a special granddaughter, Angela, as well as the following grandchildren, Curtis, Carolyn, Tiffany, Mary Ellen, Debbie, Laura, Keys, Randy, Mary Alice, Windy, Christy, Daniel, Nathan and Alison; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 21, 2003, in the Knollkreg Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel, with Rev. Dewey Williams and Rev. Sam Haynes officiating. Burial will follow in the Knollkreg Memorial Park. Those attending the service are asked to assemble at the mausoleum chapel by 1:50 p.m. Sunday. Helen Short Bowman LEBANON -- Helen Short Bowman, age 80, formerly of Burkes Garden, Va., died suddenly Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003, at her home. Born Oct. 24, 1922, at Red Ash, Va., she was a daughter of the late William B. and Millie Beavers Short. She was of the Methodist faith and attended Raven Methodist Church. Mrs. Bowman graduated from Richlands High School in 1940 and was a graduate of Bluefield Business College. She was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. After returning home from the Navy, she was employed at Pocahontas Fuel Company for a number of years as a bookkeeper for the company store. In 1950, she and her husband moved from Horsepen, Va., to Burkes Garden to assist in the operation of the family farm for 40 years. Mrs. Bowman moved to Lebanon after her husband's death in 1987. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred L. Bowman, infant son, Edward William Bowman, two sisters, Frances Whittaker and Doris Hadden, and one brother, Ralph L. Short. Survivors include two daughters, Karen Davis and husband Jack of Lebanon and Sandra Bowman of Marion; one brother, Harold W. Short and wife Charlotte of Cedar Bluff, Va.; two sisters, Maxine Whitt and husband George Harold of Swords Creek, Va., and Lucille Nichols of Worcester, Mass.; one grandson, Joseph Walker Davis of Greeneville, Tenn.; two brothers in-law, Bernard W. Bowman and wife Elizabeth of Burkes Garden and Charlie Bowman of Falls Mills, Va.; one sister in-law, Betty B. Patrick and husband Lowell of Falls Mills, and several nieces and nephews and several great-nieces and great-nephews. Burns WILDWOOD, Tenn. -- Elizabeth Waters Burns, age 85, died Sept. 18, 2003. She was the daughter of (Pappy) Joe and Lula Waters of Wildwood. She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Enoch, Max, and Otis Waters. Beloved wife of 52 years to Floyd Thomas Burns Sr., she was an active member of Logans Chapel United Methodist Church. Mr. and Mrs. Burns were the first formal wedding to take place in the new Logans Church building. Mrs. Burns graduated from Porter High School. She attended Maryville College for two years, transferring to the University of Tennessee, where she graduated with a degree in home economics. She retired from the Blount County School System in 1983, after teaching at Porter Elementary for 16 years and Friendsville and Porter High Schools for nine years.
