"Butch" Armes Jr., 59 years of age, passed away Friday, Sept. 19, 2003, in Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center following an extended illness. Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Claude S. "Red" and Masil Mogan Armes. He was a life-long resident of Buchanan County and attended the Church of Christ. He was a graduate of Grundy High School, attended Clinch Valley College and was a bookkeeper. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Mr. Armes was preceded in death by his parents, Claude S. "Red" and Masil Morgan Armes, one brother, Jimmy Armes, seven aunts and 11 uncles. He is survived by three aunts, Hazel Morgan Wyatt, Grundy, Faye Morgan Harrison, Statesville, N.C., and Lettie Morgan Cox, Grundy. Funeral services for Claude S. Farris Funeral Service, 427 E. Main St., Abingdon, is serving the family of Mr. Cossie Curtis Boggs. Kenneth H. Cullum CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Kenneth H. Cullum, 62, died Sept. 19, 2003, at his home after a long battle with cancer. Ken was born in Dallas on November 9, 1940, a son of the late Earl and Louise Cullum. He was a 1958 graduate of Miami High School in Miami, Okla. He graduated with honors with a B.S. degree from Purdue University in 1963. After graduation, Ken was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Regular Army. Following artillery schooling at Fort Sill, Okla., and airborne training at Fort Benning, Ga., he was assigned to the 3rd Armored Division in West Germany. During this three-year tour of duty, he served for a period as aide-de-camp to the Assistant Division Commander. He was then assigned to the 25th Infantry Division in Vietnam, where he served a one-year tour and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for outstanding meritorious service. Following his discharge from the service, he attended the University of Notre Dame, graduating with high honors in the Charter M.B.A. Class of 1969. He then joined Bristol Steel & Iron Works Inc., a privately-held steel fabrication and erection company headquartered in Bristol Virginia, where he was employed for 27 years, retiring in 1996 after serving as the president and chief executive officer for 10 years. Ken took particular pleasure in performing volunteer work, including the United Way of Bristol, where he was active for 17 years in numerous capacities. He was a Paul Harris Fellow in the Rotary Club of Bristol, served on the Board for the Greater Bristol Chamber of Commerce and was on the Board of Trustees for Virginia Intermont College. Ken was preceded in death by his brother, Richard Cullum. He is survived by his wife, Kathy; his children, Joel Cullum and his wife Dayna of Bristol Tennessee, Lisa Denise Burkard and her husband Mike of Charlotte and Douglas Cullum of Seattle; his stepdaughter, Collie DeTullio and her husband Joe of Charlotte; his sister, Kaye Lee and her husband Ed of Poteet, Texas, and five grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at Oak Lawn United Methodist Church in Dallas on Saturday, Sept. 27, at 2 p.m. Services to be held in Bristol will be announced at a later date. Harris Jr., age 87, went to his Heavenly Father on Friday, Sept. 19, 2003, in Johnston Memorial Hospital. He was born Feb. 11, 1916, in Mt. Airy, N.C., to Jason C. Harris and Henrietta Barker Harris. He always enjoyed singing, having studied voice in high school and winning a state scholarship solo competition. He married his sweetheart, Kathryn Puckett, on Jan. 1, 1937. They lived in Mt. Airy until he was transferred to Abingdon as manager of Kroger in 1943. He worked with Kroger and other grocery chains until joining Jeffries Hosiery/Renfro Corporation as a salesman in 1962. He remained with Jeffries until his retirement at age 70. J.C. enjoyed all sports, especially baseball and the Atlanta Braves. He loved spending time with his large family and many friends. He had a great sense of humor and loved to tease and have lively discussions about politics, sports and life. He also had a generous, unselfish spirit. He was a long-time member of Abingdon United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Virginia Harris Sorenson, two brothers, Robert W. Harris and George F. Harris, and by his granddaughter, Deborah Paige Fletcher. J.C. is survived by his wife of 66 years, Kathryn Puckett Harris; his son and daughter-in-law, Jason C. III and Judy Gentry Harris of Abingdon; his daughters, Vicki Harris Fletcher of Abingdon and Gloria J. Harris of Charlotte, N.C., and his daughter and son-in-law, Barbara H. Farris and David M. Farris of Abingdon. He is also survived by two brothers, Paul B. Harris and wife Anne of Wytheville, Va., and Edwin G. Harris of Bristol Virginia. His surviving grandchildren are Kimberly Farris Luke, David M. Farris II, Kelly P. Farris, Brooke Harris Bunn, Jason C. Harris IV and Jennifer L. Harris. Harris Jr. Cecil Hartley BRISTOL, Tenn. -- Cecil Leonard Hartley, age 86, passed away Friday, Sept. 19, 2003, in Select Specialty Hospital. He was a native of Boone, N.C., and was a son of the late Estes and Lunda Wooten Hartley. He was a descendant of four brothers who came from England in the 1700's and was one of 10 children. His family owned much of the land that is now Boone. During the depression years, the family owned a large farm and harvested cabbage and potatoes to sell. Mr. Hartley worked the farm from his teenage years and at 16 drove truckloads of produce to market in Lenoir and Charlotte. He was a natural born salesman and opened bread routes for Kerns Bakery all over the region. He eventually became general manager of Kerns in Bristol. He was a member of South Bristol United Methodist Church and an avid golfer well into his 80s. Survivors include his loving wife of 67 years, Wilma Cook Hartley; a daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Richard F. Buddine of Bristol Virginia; two sisters, Mary Ubel and Anna Lee Schumaker, both of Coshocton, Ohio; a brother, Howard Hartley, also of Coshocton; two grandchildren, Bekki Rezabek of Plymouth, Minn., and Scott Burnette of Monroe, Ga.; four great-grandchildren, Dann, Amanda, Matthew and Brandon, and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Pippin was a native and life-long resident of the Bristol area. He was the son of the late William Thomas and Laura Olivene Blevins Pippin. He was a delivery man for Pet Dairy for 14 years and express agent for 14 years for the Railway Express Agency. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the King Lodge, Jericho Temple and the DAV Honor Guard Chapter 40. Mr. Pippin was a U.S. Army veteran serving during World War II and a member of the McIver Memorial Presbyterian Church. He was preceded in death by one sister, Hazel Jane Pippin. Stanley Sr. DAMASCUS -- Michael Lester Stanley Sr., age 36, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 18, 2003, at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center, Bristol Tennessee, from injuries received in an accident. He was a life-long resident of Damascus, born Aug. 20, 1967, to Marvin "Pete" and Isabell Stanley of Damascus. Mr. Stanley was a truck driver and heavy equipment operator by trade and was of the Baptist faith. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife of six years, Lisa Stanley; three sons, Michael Lester Stanley Jr., Aaron Napier and Brandon Napier, all of the home; one daughter, Dava Napier of the home; his only sibling, sister, Brenda Sue Cornett of Damascus; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews and had many special friends too numerous to list. Friends will be received from 6-8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 22, 2003, at Gate City Funeral Home and anytime at the residence of Jimmy and Alice Kegley. Services will follow at 8 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home, with Rev. Bob Carbary and Rev. G.W. White officiating. Music will be provided by Faye and Janice Porter. Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2003, at the Compton Family Cemetery, Twin Springs Community. The family will meet at 10 a.m. at the funeral home to go in procession to the cemetery. Nephews will serve as pallbearers. Grandsons will serve as honorary pallbearers.
