She was born Sept. 25, 1917, in Washington County to the late Tom Litton and Martha Gobble Litton. Mrs. Aven was preceded in death by her husband, Howard M. Aven; and a son-in-law, James E. Minnick. She was a member of the Green Spring Presbyterian Church. Survivors include a son, John W. Aven and wife Sandy of the Green Spring Community; three daughters: Martha Aven Burnette of Bristol Tennessee; Eva Aven Spear and husband George of Longwood, Fla.; and JoAnn Aven Minnick of the Green Spring Community; a stepson, Howard Dwayne Aven of Cassopolis, Mich.; a sister, Mozell Colley of Jonesborough, Tenn.; a brother-in-law, Epperson Terry of Cedar Springs, Va.; three grandchildren, Whitney Nicole Aven, Suzanne Roberts Arias and Norman G. Bise, age 96, passed away at the Norton Community Hospital on Monday, Sept. 22, 2003, after a lengthy illness. Born in Dickenson County, Va., he was the son of the late A.L. (Bidge), and Jenny Rose Bise. He had taught school in Dickenson County, and was the owner- operator of a Gulf station for more than 25 years prior to his retirement. Mr. Bise served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and was recipient of the Purple Heart medal, and he was a member of Valley View Freewill Baptist Church. Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Hazel Cook Bise; and most recently, his second wife, Gertrude Childress Bise; a daughter, Patty Sue Bise Keith; and infant son, Eual D. Bise Jr.; five brothers, Fred, Bascom, Titus, Allen and Alton Bise; and his sisters, Oma Arrowood and Lythia Bowman. She was born Nov. 16, 1920, in Lebanon, and had made her home in Bristol Virginia for the past several decades. She was the daughter of the late William Thomas Rose and the late Ida Mae Clifton Rose. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Fields of Lebanon; and her brother, Homer Rex Rose of Portsmouth, Va. Mrs. Fields was a retired employee of Oak Grove School in Russell County, and was a member of the Oak Grove United Methodist Church. She was also involved in various senior citizens activities in the Bristol area. Survivors include her brother, Carl W. Agnes Cross Hubbard LEBANON -- Agnes Cross Hubbard, 90, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2003, at Maple Grove Health Care Center following a long illness. She was born Oct. 7, 1912, in Russell County, Va., the daughter of the late Andy B. and Belle Cross. She lived most of her life in the Cross Roads Community before moving to Lebanon in 1984. She was the oldest member of the Maple Grove Community Church, Cross Roads, of which she was always very active. She was fondly known as "Aunt Agnes" and "Granny" to a host of friends and neighbors. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence W. Hubbard; son-in-law, Buddy Taylor; three sisters; and two brothers. He was a member and former deacon of the Guest River Pentecostal Church and was retired from Appalachian Oil Company. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he was active in the VFW Post 4301, where he was a past post commander, Disabled American Veterans Chapter 56 and the American Legion. He formerly was a member of the Norton Rescue Squad and will be remembered by many as a coach in Norton's Little League Baseball Program. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Artie Short Mathieson; and a sister, Rosa Lee Jones. McKearney II BRISTOL, Tenn. -- James Francis McKearney II, age 77, died Monday, Sept. 22, 2003, at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and had been a resident of Bristol for 13 years. He was an honorable World War II Army veteran, who fought in Germany. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 6695 and a 4th Degree Knight and Faithful Navigator in the Father John Aiken Council 1840. He worked most of his life (25 years) for A.I.L. Instrument Labs in conjunction with the Department of Defense and, after retirement, dedicated his life to the church and the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of St. Anne's Catholic Church and volunteered extensively in the food pantry, bingo and other charitable areas. He was an avid golfer and, in his heyday (1960s), he won several tournaments. James loved to travel. Last month, he drove to New Hampshire to visit his daughter and had visited his son in Tucson, Ariz., in February. He was the beloved husband of Eileen Magliano McKearney, who left us about 3 years ago. He was a dedicated and loving father of three children. James has now been reunited with his beloved wife, Eileen. Survivors include a daughter, Maureen Gaynor of Grantham, N.H.; two sons: James McKearney III of Tucson and Michael McKearney of Bristol Tennessee; a sister, Frances LaRocco of Florida; two granddaughters, Kathleen McKearney and Colleen McKearney; and three grandsons, Timothy Dice, Robert Dice and James McKearney IV. She was a daughter of the late Lewis and Boyd Mathieson Collins, and was preceded in death by her first husband, Fred Hensley, in 1978; and her second husband, Wallace Williams, in 1983. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Lassie Collins and Gladys Dean; and by four brothers, Roy Collins, Lloyd Collins, Eugene Collins and Donnie Collins. Xenophon, 85, formerly of Kingsport and residing in Bristol Tennessee at the time of his death, died Monday, Sept. 22, 2003, in Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. He born in Chicago and was a resident of Bristol Tennessee for the past 1½ years. Mr. Xenophon retired as a barber after 54 years. He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy, serving in Pearl Harbor on the USS Dixie, and was a member of the American Legion Hammond Post 3. Mr. Xenophon was a Greek Orthodox. Preceding him in death were his sister, Zoi Sorise; and three brothers, George Xenophon, Gus Xenophon and Tony Xenophon. Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Edith M. Xenophon, Kingsport; one sister, Tess McNicholas, Laguna Hills, Calif.; several nieces and nephews; and his best friend, Jimmy the Greek, Chicago.
