Leola Scott Edwards JONESBOROUGH -- Leola Scott Edwards (Mrs. Ova) passed away at her home on Monday, Sept. 22, 2003. Leola was born in Washington County, Va., a daughter of the late Charlie and Velma Scott of Meadowview. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Ova Edwards in June, 2000, and by two sons, Chandler Joseph Edwards and infant son Clinton Edwards. She was also predeceased by two sisters and three brothers- in-law, Eula Scott Counts and husband Henry A. Counts, Mildred Scott Humphreys and husband Glenn E. Humphreys and James R. (Bob) Tomlinson. Also by one brother, Charles C. Scott Jr. Leola is survived by two daughters, Vesta Sue Zimmermand husband C.A. (Buddy) Zimmerman and Ovetta Honea and husband Randy Honea; three sons, Chadwick J. Edwards (wife: Laurie), Jarrett M. Edwards (wife: Bonnie) and Hollis W. Edwards(wife: Karen); 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Also surviving are one sister, Lourene (Joey) Tomlinson Goedert (husband: Jack), a sister-in-law, Eileen M. Scott (Mrs. Charles C. Jr.), and several nieces and nephews. She was the daughter of the late Nathan Thomas Payne and Mary Cecilia Arnold Payne of Buckingham County, Va. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Mike Hines, and a daughter, Joyce Hines Schaffer. Violet was a 1926 graduate of the University of Virginia School of Nursing. Dr. and Mrs. Hines began their medical career at Drill, Va., in 1928. They moved to Abingdon in 1932 and established a family practice which continued until the death of Dr. Mike in 1954. Mrs. Hines continued her nursing career at Johnston Memorial Hospital as nursing supervisor until her retirement and she served many years as a private duty nurse. Violet was a member of the Abingdon United Methodist Church, the Lake Perry Wesley Circle, the former Ladies Bible Class, member of UVa Nursing Alumni, a charter member of the Washington County Life Saving Crewettes, was a long time active member of the P T A, band boosters and athletic club in the town of Abingdon. Violet was an active rosarian. For many years she maintained a home in Yalaha, Fla., where she was a citrus grower. She also enjoyed operating a farm in Washington County, Va., for many years. She is survived by one daughter, Peggy Hines Mask and husband Dunavant Mask, Bolivar, Tenn. one son, Bobby M. "Mickey" Hines and wife Jeanette Hines, Abingdon, and one sister, Annie Payne White, Charlottesville. Violet had nine grandchildren, Elizabeth Mask Reynolds, Dunavant Mask III, Margaret Mask Gildard, Kay Schaffer Wills, Robert E. Schaffer, M. Keith Hines, Dawn Hines Dennison, J.B. Wright and Jennifer Wright Litton; eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Violet had several special caregivers, Jo Morrow, Mabel Widener, Hazel Hall, Madge Boyd and Sue Campbell. Helen Loudy Hopson Helen Loudy Hopson, 80, died Friday, Sept. 26, 2003, at NHC Healthcare in Johnson City. She was born in Kansas City, Mo., a daughter of the late Edward L. and Hattie Shire Loudy, and moved here in 1924. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Blountville. She worked for Piedmont Aviation and retired in 1978. She held a pilot's license and served as a WAVE during World War II. She is survived by a son, Mike Hopson and his wife Judy of Bluff City, and two grandchildren, Andrea Hopson and Sam Hopson. Lester Sr. died Thursday, Sept. 25, 2003, at Johnston Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. He was born in Glade Spring, on Dec. 16, 1922, and had lived there his entire life. He was the son of the late David N. and Mattie O. Lester. He was of the Presbyterian faith. Mr. Lester was a farmer and a building contractor until he retired 15 years ago. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, James and David Jr., and two sisters, Vivian L. Lester and Irene L. Ryburn. Survivors: his wife, Pauline F. Lester of Glade Spring; two sons, William C. Mrs. Mitchell was a well-known and respected antiques and collectibles dealer in Abingdon for many years and was a member of the Abingdon United Methodist Church. She was a native of north Georgia and after graduating from high school, attended Piedmont College in Demorest, Ga., on a basketball scholarship. She is survived by four children, B. David Mitchell, Kansas City, Mo., Donna Mitchell Moore, Abingdon, Nicki M. Jenkins and her husband Brig. Gen. (Ret.) Robert G. Jenkins, Vienna, Va., and James E. Stafford BRISTOL, Tenn. -- Blanche C. Stafford, age 70, went to be with Jesus on Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2003. She was born in Shady Valley, Tenn., the daughter of the late Stacy and Ethel Sluder Crosswhite. Ms. Stafford had moved to Bristol more than 50 years ago and was a charter member of Vance Bible Church, where she worked as a Sunday School teacher for many years and also served in the OMC Group. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Stafford, two brothers, Elmer Crosswhite and Preston Crosswhite, and a sister, Essie Blevins. Born June 26, 1909, in Washington County, Va., a daughter of the late Robert Moore and Nellie Rector Moore, she was the wife of the late Maynard Wallace. She had lived in Russell County and Lebanon for 40 years, moving to Jacksonville, Fla., in 1964. She was a member of the Cedar Creek Baptist Church in Lebanon and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 182 in Abingdon. She was a member of the Lake Tans Community Association. She was preceded in death by a sister, Gwendolyn Puckett, and three brothers, Miles, William and Alfred Moore. She worked hard and played hard. Survivors include her daughter, Marjorie Hash Mann, Jacksonville; a son, Nuel Wallace and wife Merlie Wallace, Moneta, Va.; three grandchildren, Joan A. Hash, Jacksonville, Nuel L. Wallace Jr., Roanoke, and Loretta W. Yeaman, Martinsville, Va.; three great-grandchildren, Brian Wallace, Johnny Yeaman and Lori Yeaman, also several nieces and nephews. Welch WYTHEVILLE, Va. -- William Garland Welch, age 75, died Thursday, Sept. 25, 2003, in Wythe County Community Hospital in Wytheville. Born on Dec. 8, 1927, in Smyth County, Va., he was the son of the late Hobart and Beulah Hicks Welch. Mr. Welch had resided in the Gaithersburg, Md., area for over 40 years before returning to the Wythe-Smyth County area in 1989. He was a member of the First Church of God in Wytheville and also attended the Groseclose First Church of God. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Phyllis Ann Welch, and a brother, Gale Hobart Welch. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Elsie Kimberling Welch of the home; four children, Wilma W. Remsberg and husband Augustus M. Remsberg of Jefferson, Md., Patricia W. Hahn and special friend Gerald Hodson of Brunswick, Md., William Edward Welch of Brunswick and Karen W.
