Vadna Barton ABINGDON -- Vadna Barton, age 91, passed away Monday, September 29, 2003, at her residence. She was born October 26, 1911, in Birchleaf, Va., to Charlie and Nellie Lee Deel, who preceded her in death. She married Arvil Barton, who preceded her in death in 1980. A son, Billy Barton, and all seven siblings also preceded her in death. She was a member of Worldwide Church of God. Vadna was a wonderful lady who will be dearly missed. Survivors include three sons, Glenn Barton and wife Joanne, of Bedford, Va., Ed Barton and wife Fina, of Partlow, Va., and Carter Barton and wife Marie, of Powhatan, Va.; five daughters, Pauline Kiser and Phyllis Barton, both of Abingdon, Jean Anderson, of Clinton, Mich., Theda Ritchie and husband George, of Gray, Tenn., and Janeth Williams and husband Terry, of Coeburn; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Bryant Mrs. Pauline Morrison Bryant, age 90, of the Mountain City Care Center, Mountain City, Tenn., and formerly of 793 Gentry Creek Road, Laurel Bloomery, Tenn., passed away Tuesday, September 30, 2003, at the Watauga Medical Center following a brief illness. Ms. Bryant was a native of Johnson County and was born December 24, 1912, to the late William S. and Alice E. Hawkins Morrison. Mrs. Bryant worked for the United States Government in Washington, D.C. for a number of years in the Office of Census Bureau. She was preceded in death by her late husband, Harry Bryant; and several sisters and brothers. Mrs. Bryant was of the Methodist faith. Survivors include: one sister, Hattie L. "Bill" Countiss, age 86, died Monday, September 29, 2003, at his daughter's residence. He was born on January 17, 1917, in Bristol Tennessee, to the late Robert E. Countiss and Margaret Cowan Countiss. His wife, Glenna Willis Countiss; a daughter, Linda K. Countiss; and a son, William G. Countiss, preceded him in death. Mr. Countiss was retired from American Thread Company and was a member of Turkey Cove Baptist Church. He was also a volunteer fireman with the Woodlawn Fire Department. Two daughters, Marie Countiss Owenby of Nebo and Julie Countiss Good of Carrollton, Ga.; three sons, Robert Samuel and Michael Willis Countiss of Bristol Tennessee, and James Anthony Countiss of Marion; two sisters, Edna Arnold of Bluff City and Fern Nelson of Bristol Tennessee; five grandchildren; and five great- grandchildren survive Mr. Countiss. Mr. Goldman was a native of Baltimore, MD, and had resided in Johnson City for the past four and a half years, and was the son of the late Simon and Sarah Isner Goldman. He retired in 1982 from Pantry Pride food stores where he worked a district manager. Mr. Goldman was a veteran of the US Army having served in World War II as Staff Sergeant in the Philippines. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Mr. Goldman was a member of the Veterans of Foreign War in Maryland. Survivors include his wife, Nelle M. He served in the U.S. Army, married Nina Hagy and was a loving husband, father of three children and grandfather to four grandchildren. Frank was gentle spirit, a hearty laugher and loved Jesus. He loved playing music and was blessed with the talent of playing music by ear, a gift of God. He was part of the "Greear Brothers Band" which on the Fourth of July 2003 honored all the musicians of Coeburn that participated in the First Bristol Sessions Recording with a monument unveiling. He held many benefits to help people in need of monies for sickness, house fire or anything that would benefit someone in need and never wanted any thanks. He also loved hunting and fishing. Mrs. Hoit was a native of Defiance, OH, where she grew up. She attended school in Alabama, lived in a variety of places including South Carolina, New York, Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee. Mrs. Hoit was a daughter of the late Harry Scott and Bessie McEwen Gardner. She received her Bacholers Degree in Business from the University of Alabama, "GO BAMA". At age 50, she earned her Masters Degree from East Tennessee State University so she could share her passion for art and finished her teaching career at T.A. Dugger Junior High School in Elizabethton, TN. Mrs. Hoit was an award winning artist, an accomplished pianist and had a zany sense of humor up to the end. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Johnson City, Defiance Society of Artists, Sigma Kappa Sorority, and Phi Delta Kappa Education Society. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hoit was preceded in death by her husband, J. Hamilton Hoit, Jr., in 1999; two brothers, Robert McEwen Gardner and Richard Brice Gardner; two infant sisters. Born February 26, 1923, in Honaker, Va., a son of the late Fred Miller and Victoria Shepherd Miller, he had lived in Kingsport, Tenn., for many years, and had lived in Wirtz the past nine years. A graduate of Virginia Tech, he was a retired aeronautical engineer. He was a U. S. Navy veteran of World War II. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Howard F. Miller; and a sister, Lois Miller. Tuggle RAVEN, Va. -- Mrs. Margaret Virginia Tuggle, age 89, of the Maple Gap section, passed away Monday, September 29, 2003, in an Abingdon health care facility. Born May 4, 1914, in Finney, Va., she was a daughter of the late George Albert and Carrie Holland Meade. She was a lifelong resident of the area and was of the Methodist faith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Tuggle; one son, Fred Tuggle; two sisters, Viola Owens and Frankie Tuggle; and two brothers, Glen Meade and Howard Meade. Survivors include one daughter, Doris Ann Tuggle Johnston Green of Paintlick, Va.; two sisters, Dorothy Keen of Cedar Bluff and Juanita Davis of Richlands; one brother, Albert Meade of Tazewell, Va.; 12 grandchildren; 17 great- grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. Dennis White officiating. Interment will follow in the Tuggle Cemetery at Maple Gap. Wagner BRISTOL, Tenn. -- Mrs. Geneva Elizabeth Lang Burroughs Wagner, age 88, of 308 Fieldcrest Dr., passed away Monday, September 29, 2003, at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Wagner was the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. William Lang of Merriden, Miss. She has been a resident of Bristol for 60 years. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, J.T. Lang, Guss Lang and Hull Lang; and two sisters, Velma White and Christine Miller;. She was the retired owner of GLW Monogramming Co., an avid golfer, gardener, gourmet cook and loving mother. She was a former member of Bristol Garden Club, Country Club and First Presbyterian Church. She is survived by her husband, Edward Wagner of Bristol, Tennessee; one son, Charles Evans Burroughs of Bristol Tennessee; stepchildren, Edward Christopher Wagner Jr., Frances Wagner Mustins, Margaret Wagner Williams and Thomas Franklin Wagner; and six grandchildren, Sharon Fontaine, Linda Ward, Michelle Sandusky, Diana Williams, Kristin Williams, Nicholas Wagner and Eric Wagner. Also, surviving are the great-grandchildren, Eric Fontaine, Elizabeth Fontaine, Darren Sandusky and Catherine Sandusky; one niece, Marie Fisher; and one nephew, Joseph Lester.
