Howard Ashworth, 83, died Tuesday morning, Sept. 30, 2003, in Wellmont Lonesome Pine Hospital, Big Stone Gap, after an extended illness. He was a pastor and evangelist in Tennessee and Virginia for the past 53 years. He was a member of the Ramsey Freewill Baptist Church. He served his country during World War II. He worked in his early years as a heavy equipment operator. He had lived in Kingsport and Greeneville, Tenn., many years before moving back to Norton in 1998. He was preceded in death by his first wife, the mother of his children, Nadiene "Jean" (McArthur) Ashworth, three sons, Howard Jr., John and David Ashworth, his parents, John and Pearl (Starnes) Ashworth, four brothers, Lonza, Bascom, Andrew and Leonard Ashworth, and two sisters, Lakie Ramey and Earchel Osborne. He is survived by his loving wife, Rena Orender Ashworth; two daughters, Mrs. Lonnie (Charlotte) Horne, Jonesborough, and Mrs. Howard (Peggy) Ramey, Church Hill, Tenn.; son, Pete Ashworth and his wife Wendy, Church Hill; three grandchildren, Greg Horne and wife Janie, David Ramey and wife Shellie and Charlotte Ramey and fiancÈ Johnny Whaley; great-grandson, Colton Horne; two stepsons, Ronald Orender and wife Sandy, Norton and Sam Orender and wife Linda, Burbank, Calif.; five step-granddaughters, Rhonda Miller and husband Eric, Erica Morgan and husband Roger; Kimberly Sterling and husband Danny, Maggie Orender and Samantha Orender; three step-great-grandchildren, Kala Morgan, Marley Sterling and Tristan Miller; two sisters, Mrs. Milum (Maudie) Lawson and Laura Conkin; sister-in-law, June Ashworth of Kingsport; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Haysi Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Maudie B. Carter ELIZABETHTON -- Maudie B. Carter, 87, 2116 West G St., died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003, in the Ivy Hall Nursing Home. A native of Gravenhurst, Ontario, Canada, she was a daughter of the late Warren and Anna Adair Mack. She had lived in Elizabethton since 1947. She was associated with her late husband, Nick Carter, in the operation of Nick Carter's Furniture Company in Elizabethton for several years. Mrs. Carter was a former pink lady at the Carter County Memorial Hospital. She was a member of the Watauga Valley Art League, the Elizabethton Women's Club and the Elizabethton Senior Citizens. Mrs. Carter was a member of the Grace Baptist Church. She was also preceded in death by a sister and two brothers. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Harold A. and Monna Carter and Robert J. and Janelle Carter, all of Elizabethton; five grandchildren, Susan Crawford and her husband Christopher, Saltville, Kip Anderson and her husband Jeffery, Chris Carter and his wife Jennifer, Bob Carter and Kate Carter, all of Elizabethton; eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Clevinger, 87 years of age, of the Poplar Creek area of Route 2, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003, at Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy, following an extended illness. Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Bert G. and Cansada Wood Clevinger. He was a life-long resident of Buchanan County, a member of Bethlehem Regular Baptist Church No. 2 since April 19, 1980. He was a retired employee of Harman Mining Company and a member of United Mine Workers of America Local Union 7025. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in Headquarters 984th Engineer Maintenance Company, receiving two Battle Stars, Good Conduct Medal, European Theater Medal and the Rifle Markmanship Award. He was a member of John Ratliff Post 164 of the American Legion. Mr. Clevinger is survived by his wife of 67 years, Lona Murville McClanahan Clevinger, Route 2, Grundy; one daughter, Betty and husband Jessie (Woody) Newberry, Route 2, Grundy; two sisters, Nona Ratliff, Route 2, Grundy, and Evelyn Clevinger, Route 2, Grundy; one brother, Bert (Junior) Clevinger, Belfast, Va.; three grandchildren, Jessie Ray Clevinger, Rita Coleman and Randy Newberry; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and special caregiver, Georgia Stiltner. Elizabeth Jackson ROSEDALE, Va. -- Elizabeth Ann Ferguson Jackson, 71, died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003, at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon. Born Nov. 23, 1931, in Russell County, a daughter of the late Charles William Ferguson Jr. and Mary Morrell Snead Ferguson, she was the wife of the late Warren Graham Jackson. She had lived her entire life in Russell County. She attended Radford College and Clinch Valley College and was a retired teacher in Tazewell County and Russell County Schools, having taught at Belfast and Elk Garden Elementary Schools. She was a member of the Dennison United Methodist Church. Survivors include two daughters, Carmen Elizabeth Jackson West and husband James Gregory West and Ingrid Leigh Jackson-Kiser and husband Christopher Kiser, all of Lebanon; one son, Charles Robert Jackson and wife Patricia Jackson, Lebanon; six grandchildren, CWW II, Richard L. Jones and Vina East Jones, he had lived in Lebanon the past 40 years. Forever ready with a quip and a smile, Terry was a lover of God first, family second, then all people and a true servant to all. He served as a constant reminder that joy was the conqueror of life's battles. He will be sadly missed by family and friends. Terry loved his church family at Lebanon Community Fellowship. "Men on a Mission" was his passion, serving and loving others his forte. Terry often said that his "Men on a Mission" group was his closest and dearest friends, no, that they were his family. Norden CHILHOWIE -- Harold William Norden, 90, died Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2003, in the Smyth County Community Hospital, Marion. He was a native of Toledo, Ohio, and a resident of Chilhowie since 1990. He was of the Lutheran faith and attended the Chilhowie United Methodist Church since moving from Florida to Virginia in 1990. He retired after 50 years of long haul truck driving and driving a Greyhound bus during World War II. As a young man, he worked with race cars, which was his hobby. Survivors include his wife, Melba Horne Norden; three sisters, Dorothy Dishop, Hilda Dunke and Lorna Sanders, all of Waseon, Ohio; one stepdaughter, Linda Hemmerling, Washington State; two granddaughters, Angeline and Lina, and four great-grandchildren. Motelle Webb Phillips BRISTOL, Tenn. -- Motelle Webb Phillips, age 91, of 912 Columbia Road, formerly of Elizabethton, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003, at her home surrounded by her family and friends. She fought a good fight, she finished her course, she kept the faith. "Henceforth, there is laid up for her a crown of righteousness," II, Timothy, 4:7-8. She was born in Seymour, Tenn., the daughter of the late M.D. and Nola Davis Webb. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Arthur W. Phillips, two sisters, Amolee Webb Berry and Kathryn Webb Bradley, and a brother, Walter Frank Webb. Ms. Phillips worked in the Textile Laboratory at Beaunit Fibers in Elizabethton for 42 years. She loved children and was so young at heart. She was known to many as Nannie Phillips. Survivors include daughter, Kathy Gardner of Bristol Tennessee; two grandchildren, Kristi Bedwell and husband Bobby of Bluff City and Jimmy Gardner of Topeka, Kan.; great-grandaughter, Bailey Madison Gardner of Topeka; sister, Johnnie Stout of Morristown, Tenn., and brothers, Eugene Webb of Rising Sun, Md., and Melvin Webb of Mesa, Ariz. Posey III BRISTOL, Va. -- George William "Bill" Posey III, age 63, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003, unexpectedly at his home. Bill was born on Nov. 24, 1939, in Birmingham, Ala. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Stella and George W. Posey Jr., as well as a brother, Clarence Jeffrey, and his sisters, Christine and Patricia. Bill began his joyous journey through life with his beloved wife Kathryn on Nov. 25, 1960. Mr. Posey's professional career began with the H.W. Lay Potato Chip Company in Atlanta. After 20 years with the company, Mr. Posey moved his family to Bristol Virginia and began a distinguished career with Moore's Quality Snacks in 1976. Mr. Posey retired on Jan. 15, 2002, as the vice-president of sales. Mr. Posey deeply loved his wife, children and grandchildren. He was a cornerstone to his extended family and countless friends. Marie Riddle BRISTOL, Tenn. -- Marie Gentry Hatcher Riddle, age 83, of 220 Broyles Lane, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003, in the Johnson City Medical Center. Mrs. Riddle was born on Nov. 5, 1919, in the Laurel Bloomery section of Johnson County, a daughter of the late Walker and Betty Maxwell Gentry, but she had lived most of her life in the Bristol area. She was a retired employee of Peter Pan Pastry and Barkers Super Market and a member of Edgemont Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Rufus Hatcher, and one son, Kenneth Hatcher. Survivors include her husband, Paul Riddle; daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Tony English; granddaughters, Sharon Holt and husband Michael and Linda English; grandsons, Gary English and his fiancÈe Angelica CDebaca and Scott Hatcher and wife Amy; great-granddaughter, Madeline Hatcher; sister, Frances Broyles; brother, Bill Gentry and wife Margaret, and several nieces and nephews. Jessie Dewey Yarber GLADE SPRING, Va. -- Jessie Dewey Yarber, age 53, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2003, at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center, Bristol Tennessee. He was a life-long resident of Washington County, Va., a son of the late Jessie Burton and Mary Alice Parson Yarber. Mr. Yarber was a truck driver for the past 30 years.
