Avery Alex Edwards BIG ROCK, Va. -- Avery Alex Edwards, 63 years of age, passed away Wednesday, October 1, 2003, at Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy. Born in Dickenson County February 28, 1940, he was the son of the late Charlie Bruce Edwards and Judy Viers Edwards. He was of the Old Regular Baptist Church faith, a disabled retired coal miner, having worked 25 years for Island Creek Coal Company VP 3, a member of the UMWA and an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and was a loving husband, father and grandfather. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters and three brothers. He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Claudett Coleman Edwards of Big Rock, VA; two daughters, Evelyn Sargent and husband Danny of Hurley, Va., and Teresa Casey and husband Jason of Mouth Card, Ky.; one son, Leslie Edwards and wife Debbie of Big Rock; three sisters, Ruth Rakes and Maggie Coleman, both of Clintwood, Va., and Arbutus Belcher of Haysi, Va.; two brothers, Richard Edwards of Haysi and Walker Edwards of Clintwood. He is also survived by four grandchildren. Born in southwest Virginia, he moved to Richmond in 1965. He is survived by his wife, Martha S. Born October 4, 1919, in Venia, Va., she was a son of the late Elijah Henry "Doll" and Mary Ellen Harris Hess. She was a lifelong resident of the area, having lived in the Finney area from 1967 until 2000. She was a member of the Venia Chapel Free Will Baptist Church and past member of the Finney Senior Citizens. Hunsucker BLOUNTVILLE -- Helen M. Hunsucker, age 74, passed away at 1:40 p.m. Thursday, October 2, 2003, surrounded by her family at her residence. Born in Bristol Virginia on March 29, 1929, a daughter of the late Tom Nelson and Laura Belle Worley Lunsford, she had resided in this area her entire life. She will be remembered as a loving mother, mamaw, great-mamaw and friend to all, who never met a stranger. Mrs. Hunsucker is preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Cecil K. She lived most of her life in Virginia and was a member of the Hopkins View Primitive Baptist Church in Adwolfe. She was a former nursing assistant, retired from Reynolds Metals Company and had a lifelong love of flowers and writing poetry. She was preceded in death by her parents; six brothers; three sisters; her first husband of 44 years, Quentin P. Dancy; and her second husband of five years, Clifford E. Jordan. She was born in Johnson County, the daughter of the late John M. and Lydia Williams Phillips, and had lived most of her life in the Harr Community of Sullivan County. She was a homemaker and a member of South Chapel Baptist Church. Mrs. Smith was the last survivor of 10 children and was preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. "Bob" Smith. Survivors include: son, Johnny Smith and wife Karen of Meadowview, Va.; daughters, Janie Shaver and husband Jerry of Bristol Tennessee, and Linda Hall and husband Ricky of Abingdon; stepsons, J.T. Smith and R.J. Smith, both of Bristol Tennessee; grandchildren, Angie Cooper, Brooke Lambert, Candy Cox and Matt Smith; step-grandchildren, Carol Combs and Steve Smith; and great-grandson, David Cole Lambert. Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 3, 2003, at 8 p.m. in the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mark Baumgardner and the Rev. Curtis King officiating. Committal services will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Rhudy's Cemetery. Pallbearers will be family. Clyde Weeks KINGSPORT -- Clyde Weeks, 81, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, September 30, 2003. Born in Russell County, Va., he moved to Kingsport after his military service. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army, where he was decorated with the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Mr. Weeks attended Central Assembly of God. Preceding him in death were his wife, Pauline Weeks (1997); a son, Clifford Weeks; and a daughter, Connie Guy. Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Yvonne and Gary Booher, Blountville, Diane and Ray Sargent, Church Hill, and Debbie and Fred Biggs, Kingsport; one son, William P. Weeks, Nashville; 12 grandchildren; 11 great- grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Hamlett- Dobson Funeral Homes, downtown Kingsport. Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Joe W. Goad officiating.
