Adkins CLINTWOOD – Mona T. Adkins, age 91, passed away at Norton Community Hospital on Monday, Oct. 6, 2003, after a lengthy illness. She was born in Dickenson County, Va., the daughter of Robert Lee and Zuela Beverly Tackett. Mrs. Adkins lived most of her adult life in Kentucky. She returned to Clintwood in 1985 and worked as a waitress at the White Star Café. She was of the Baptist faith. Other than her parents, her husband, Butler Adkins, and a son, Richard “Dick” Adkins, preceded her in death. Surviving are two sons, Bob Adkins and wife Wanda, Clintwood, and Roy Charles Lamb, Columbus, Ohio; six grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2003, from the Clintwood Funeral Home Chapel, with Minister John Farmer officiating. Burial will follow in the Powell Valley Memorial Gardens, Big Stone Gap. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Altizer CEDAR BLUFF, Va. – Jessica Nicole Altizer, age 15, passed away Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003, at the Bristol Memorial Hospital in Bristol Tennessee. Born Sept. 25, 1988, she was the daughter of Samuel N. and Diane Honaker Altizer Jr. of the Baptist Valley area of Cedar Bluff. She was preceded in death by one brother, Samuel Ein Altizer. In addition to her parents, she is survived by her maternal grandparents, Billy C. and Hattie Waddell Honaker of Cedar Bluff; paternal grandparents, Rev. Samuel N. and Deanis Johnson Altizer of Cedar Bluff; paternal great-grandparents, Joe and Evadell Johnson of Cedar Bluff, and maternal great-grandmother, Thelma Honaker, North Tazewell, Va. Also, a host of family and friends survive as well her beloved cat, “Simon.” Jessica was a student at Richlands High School, Richlands. Jessica was an avid ball player. She was a member of the Richlands High School Girls Softball and Volleyball teams and she also played with other area softball leagues. She was loved by her many friends, team members, teachers and coaches. Blaker NARROWS, Va. – Gertrude Farley Blaker, 82, died Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003, in the Lewis Gale Hospital, Salem. She was born in Wythe County on June 20, 1921, and was the daughter of the late Henry and Myrtle Surratt Lawson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Homer Caudill Farley, and a son, Tom Farley. She is survived by a son and his wife, Dwight and Ann Farley, Bristol Virginia; a daughter, Janet F. Fitzgerald, Elliston, Va.; two sisters, Leona Vogt, Narrows, and Madeline Porterfield, Rich Creek; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Vernon Coy Hartsock BRISTOL, Va. – Vernon Coy Hartsock went to be with the Lord on Monday, Oct. 6, 2003, at Select Specialty Hospital. He was born in Benhams, Va., and was a son of the late Arthur and Lula Leonard Hartsock. He was retired from Raytheon after 28 years of service. Mr. Hartsock loved acoustic music and playing with his buddies. He was a member of the Woodmen of the World and attended Friendship Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Charmie McCracken, and a brother, Clarence Hartsock. Mr. Hartsock is survived by his wife, Opal Pauline Johnson Hartsock; two sons, Roger Hartsock and his fiancée Josie Kelly of Blountville and John Hartsock of Abingdon, and several nieces and nephews. He had been a resident of Buchanan County several years and was a retired employee of Island Creek Coal Corporation Beatrice Mine. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict, receiving the National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. Umberger WYTHEVILLE – Floyd Kinley Umberger, 83, died Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003, at his residence. Born in Wythe County, he was the son of the late Walter J. and Bertha Mae Catron Umberger. He was retired from the Elliott Delivery Service and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Surviving are his wife, Aileen Andrews Umberger; three daughters, Ann U. Davis, Sue U. Hunley and Patty U. Hall, all of Wytheville; three sisters, Celia Shelton, Ruth Spraker and Paige Fielder, all of Wytheville; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Born Aug. 20, 1926, in Skeggs, Va., he was a son of the late Fernando and Pattie Jane Horn VanDyke. He had spent most of his life in the Honaker area and was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II. He was a disabled coal miner and a member of the UMWA. He attended the Harvest Time Tabernacle. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Ronnie P. VanDyke, five brothers, Buck VanDyke, F.P. VanDyke, George VanDyke, Hurley VanDyke and Donald VanDyke, and four sisters, Rosalie Matney, Hassie Jackson, Esther Mitchell and Naomi Deel. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Dorothy VanDyke of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Jack and Gretchen VanDyke of Rosedale, Va.; daughter-in-law, Mary VanDyke of Richlands; two brothers, Bill VanDyke of Rowe, Va., and Alvie VanDyke of Honaker; seven grandchildren, Rhonda Thomason, Christy Bunker, Teresa Conner, Vanessa Ashman, Jackie VanDyke, Jordon VanDyke and Madison VanDyke, and six great-grandchildren also survive.
