Booher MARION, N.C. – Glenn Harvey Booher, age 77, born in Blountville Dec. 20, 1925, died Friday, Oct. 10, 2003, at the McDowell Hospital after a long period of declining health. He was a son of the late Henry Nathan and Eva O’Dell Booher. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sally Bowles Booher of Maybeury, W.Va. He retired from Coats American after 45 years of service. Mr. Booher is survived by one sister, Nell Crosswhite of Bristol, Tenn.; three daughters, Kay Estes of Marion, Joyce Hudgins of Morganton, N.C., and Pam McKinney of Marion; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Burnette BRISTOL, Va. – Helen Stewart Burnette, age 79, went to be with the Lord, Friday, Oct. 10, 2003, at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was a daughter of the late Plato and Mary Alice Phipps Stewart and was a resident of the Bristol area most of her life. She was a school teacher, having retired from the Sullivan County, Tenn., school system and had also taught in Washington County, Va. She was a member of Bradley Street Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Burnette was preceded in death by her husband, George S. Burnette, three brothers, York Stewart, Albert Stewart and Carlton Stewart, and two sisters, Irene Owen and Evelyn Howell. Survivors include a daughter, Linda Martin and her husband Dean Martin of Bristol, Tenn.; a son, James A. Ashby Jr. and his wife Donna S. Ashby of Knoxville; a stepdaughter, Vada Burnette Fauver of Whitesville, N.C.; two sisters, Edith Beard of Tampa, Fla., and Ruth Bailey of Knoxville; ten grandchildren, Shane Booher, Shannon Booher, Sara Booher, Heather Ashby, Shane Dockrey, Rebekah Fauver, Jonathan Fauver, Christina Martin, Kimberly M. Stiltner and James Burke; two great-grandchildren, Zackary Booher and Danielle Stiltner, and several nieces and nephews. Campbell, 65, passed away at French Hospital in San Louis Obispo, Calif. Jim was born in Bristol Virginia on April 13, 1938, to Mr. and Mrs. Ervin J. Campbell. He graduated from East Tennessee State University in 1960. He worked in accounting for WCYB-TV before moving to Norfolk, Va., and working for Port Authority and Weyerhauser. He was transferred to Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., in 1979. He moved to Cayucos, Calif., in 1995 before retiring in August of 2001. He married Suzanne Smith in August of 1968. He was a member of the Lions Club in Virginia and California for 35 years. He was district governor of the Lions Club from 1989 to 1990, honorary mayor of Cayucos for two years and president of Cayucos Chamber of Commerce. Jim is survived by his sons, Robert “Roj” Campbell of Morro Bay and Charles “Chip” and wife Tessy Campbell of Oklahoma; grandchildren, Nicole, James and Lacy Campbell; brother, Joe Campbell; sisters, Mary Boyd and Rachel Campbell of Bristol Tennessee and Peggy Grogan of Atlanta, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, father, mother and brother, Ervin Campbell of Plant City, Fla. A celebration of life will take place at 7 p.m. Monday at the Cayucos Veterans Hall in Cayucos. Billie Andoff Clark MENDOTA, Va. – Billie Andoff Clark, age 78, passed away Friday, Oct. 10, 2003, at his residence following a struggle with lung and bone cancer. He was born in Keokee, Va., the son of the late Palmer and Nora Clark. He grew up in Dunbar, Va., the third of five siblings that included the late Warren Clark. He married Thelma Irene Belcher in 1946. They had two daughters. Irene and he moved to Mendota when he retired. She died in Dec., 1997. He spent his remaining days being a friend to his neighbors. He was a U.S. Navy veteran who served aboard the U.S.S. Alkaid in the South Pacific during WWII. He worked in the coal industry for 42 years, first with the UMWA and then as a “company man.” At the time of his retirement in 1987, he was manager of Westmoreland Surface Mining Operations in Wise County, Va. B.A. was an avid fisherman and liked to brag that he and his fishing buddies had caught all the fish in the north fork of the Holston River, twice. Elswick Jr. RICHLANDS – Mr. Powell S. “Bud” Elswick Jr., age 83, of 1821 5th St., died Friday, Oct. 10, 2003, at his home following a lengthy illness. He was born in Richlands and was a son of the late Powell S. and Emma Dawson Elswick Sr. He was a life-long resident of the Richlands area and was a retired painter. Bud’s love of beautiful flowers that he planted and cared for brought smiles to the many friends he shared his creations with. Estep, 81, died Friday, Oct. 10, 2003, at Indian Path Hospital in Kingsport. Born to the late Charlie and Eliza Akers, she was a resident of Norton since she was a small child. She was the widow of Emmitt Estep and was a member of Davis Chapel Freewill Baptist Church in Ramsey. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Eddie Joe and Reedy Estep of Gate City, and one granddaughter, Paige Estep. Fennell Elizabeth Fern Fennell, age 20, passed away in Austin, Texas, on Oct. 6, 2003, from injuries sustained in an auto accident. Survivors include her mother and father, Peggy and Doug Phelps of Bristol, Tenn.; one sister, Nikki Shutters of Virginia; three brothers, Chris Fennell of Delaware, Thomas Fennell and Sheldon Terry, both of Bristol, Tenn.; biological father, John Fennell of Florida; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Lane of Missouri, and paternal grandmother, Dorothy Phelps of Florida. Also surviving are several aunts, uncles and cousins. Beth was the kindest, most loving person anyone could ever meet. She loved spending time with her family and hanging out with her best friends. She loved animals and butterflies. She was loved by everyone and will truly be missed and never forgotten. She was born in Carter County, Tenn., the daughter of the late Arthur and Faye Whitehead Feathers. She had spent most of her life in the Bristol area and was a former registered nurse and Certified Diabetic Educator at Wellmont Medical Center, where she also served many years as a patient teaching coordinator. She was a member of Avoca Christian Church and the widow of Jack C. Morton. Sanders KINGSPORT – Francis Nelle Hendrix Sanders, age 87, formerly of Blountville and Kingsport and a resident of Baysmont Asbury Center, passed away Thursday, Oct. 9, 2003, in the Holston Valley Medical Center. She was born in Elizabethton and was a daughter of the late Calvin and Sophia (Brumit) Hendrix. She was married to the late James (Jim) B. Sanders. She was a charter-founding member of the Indian Springs Christian Church. She was a graduate of Martinsville High School in Martinsville, Va., and Milligan College in Elizabethton, a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, a teacher in the Sullivan County School System, superintendent of school lunches in Sullivan County, assistant state supervisor for school lunches for East Tennessee, director of school food service for Kingsport City Schools until her retirement. She served as Southeast Regional Director of the American School Food Service Association over nine states. She was a past president of the Tennessee School Food Service Association. Since her retirement, Francis had continued to be involved in her church, her sorority and community. She had lived in Baysmont Asbury Center for the past two years, where she actively served on the food committee. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Steve Hendrix, and her sister, Helen Reynolds. Francis is survived by her sister, Eula Hill of Martinsville, a niece, Lisa Swain and her husband Tom, and great-nephews, Bradford and Baker Swain, all of Brentwood, Tenn. Calling hours will be 2-3 p. m. Sunday at the Indian Springs Christian Church. Funeral service will be 3 p. m. at the church, with Pastor Mike Beverly officiating and assisted by Bob Allen. Johnnie R. Stanley CLINTWOOD, Va. – Johnnie Radford (Rad) Stanley, 85, a beloved member of his community and family, died Friday, Oct. 10, 2003, at his home after a very long illness. Born on June 15, 1918, at Lick Fork near Clintwood, Rad was the youngest of nine children, seven girls and two boys, of Robert Henry and Cosby Mullins Stanley. During his teenage years, he became very close and spent much time with the family of his uncle, James Mathew Stanley. He always credited them with motivating him to complete Ervinton High School and Hiwassee College. He joined the army during WWII. Afterwards, and prior to returning to his beloved Dickenson County, he worked for Montgomery Ward, both in Missouri and Florida. He became a successful businessman. In 1949, he co-founded Stanley’s General Store of Darwin, near Clintwood, which he sold in 1970. In 1959, he co-founded Modern Hardware & Furniture Co., which is still run by his family. In 1973, he co-founded and rose to President of the Board of Directors of a local bank, now known as First Vantage/BB&T of Clintwood. Rad was always very involved in his community. Among other things, he was an active member of the Clintwood United Methodist Church, and rose to president and achieved lifetime member status with Clintwood Kiwanis. Surviving is his wife of 61 years, Beatrice Clay Stanley; his son, John Clay Stanley, Clintwood; daughter, Patricia Ann Hopkins and husband Danny of Collinsville, Va.; one sister, Eliza Grimes, St. Louis, Mo.; three grandchildren, Jill Mullins and husband Ken, John Daniel and Joey Hopkins, and one great-grandson, Ethan Henley Mullins. Rad also leaves behind a great many beloved nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at the Clintwood United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at the Clay family cemetery on Caney Ridge. Ministers Bill Cahill and Joe Glenn Sluss will preside, while Ken Childress and John Daniel Hopkins provide music. There will be remarks by friends. Following the service, burial will take place at the Clay Family Cemetery on Caney Ridge. Hartsell Strouth CEDAR BLUFF – Mr. Hartsell “J.C.” Strouth, age 70, of 134 Curve St., died Friday, Oct. 10, 2003, at a Bristol Tennessee hospital following a lengthy illness. He was born in Russell County, Va., and was a son of the late Hassell Strouth and Mary Gross Strouth Goodie, both Tazewell County natives. He was a life-long resident of the Cedar Bluff area, was a former coal miner and was of the Holiness faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Patty Hale, and a half-brother, Bradley Strouth. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Frances Marie Helton Strouth; two daughters, Mrs. Remona Dales and husband Greg of Cedar Bluff and Mrs. Carolyn Vance of Doran, Va.; one son, Mr. David Wayne Yates of Rosedale, Va.; two sisters, Mrs. Mildred “Sis” McCowan of Doran and Mrs. Priscilla “Shell” McGlothlin and husband Stanley of Raven, Va.; one brother, Mr. David Goodie and wife Teresa of Bristol, Va.; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survive.
