She was born March 16, 1932, in McDowell County, W.Va., to Boice Ray and Vera Addison Smith, Russell County natives, who preceded her in death. Mrs. Adkins was a graduate of Tazewell High School, Tazewell, Va., and West Virginia Business College, Bluefield, W.Va. She was secretary to Charles Lowry Sr. of Lowry Real Estate for 17 years. She was of the Protestant faith and had accepted Jesus as her Savior. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and sister. Survivors include her husband, Bill Adkins, Bristol Virginia; her son, David Boice Adkins, St. Charles, Mo.; her granddaughter, Amy Adkins; twin grandsons, Adam and Anthony Adkins; their mother, Diane Adkins; and sister, Bernice Smith Nash, Bristol Tennessee. She is also survived by 20 first cousins, including Lauretta Gray, a childhood companion; special friends, Don and Eloise Ellis, Charles and Daphne Lowry and Keith and Brenda Foster; and many friends who knew her for her kindness and compassion. The visitation will be Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2003, from 6:00 until 7:30 p.m. at the Farris Funeral Home, 427 East Main St., with a celebration of her life beginning at 7:30 p.m., conducted by Rev. Tom Edwards and Rev. Larry Smith. The committal service will be conducted Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003, at 11:00 a.m. in Ketron Memorial Gardens, Lebanon. The daughter of the late Elbert Martin and Elizabeth Morris Cooper, she was born Jan. 27, 1906, in Keokee, Va. Her father was a prominent merchant and elected official in Lee County, Va. After graduating at age 14 from high school, Ida attended Radford College. She earned her teaching certificate at age 17 and taught school in Calvin, Va. Ida Jane, as she was affectionately known, came to Charlotte in 1940 and was employed by Aetna Insurance Company until her retirement in 1967. She was an avid bridge, canasta and pinochle player in the same clubs for about 50 years. Ida loved to cook and was well-known for her dinner rolls and her recipes. She only missed a few times doing the daily crossword puzzles. A charter member of Christ United Methodist Church, she and husband, Howard Brock, have been dedicated to the success of the church and it is here that the pastor, Rev. Jeffrey Coppley, will lead the service of Thanksgiving for Ida Jane Cooper Marshall Brock. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, at Christ United Methodist Church. Tester Elvin B. “Eb” Tester, 73, passed away on Oct. 9, 2003. He was born in Bristol Virginia and lived most of his life in Bristol Tennessee. Vanover Henry C. “Carter” Vanover, age 84, died Monday morning, Oct. 13, 2003, at Norton Community Hospital following a long illness. Carter was born Nov. 8, 1918, near Clintwood, Va. Carter was a lifelong resident of Dickenson County. He was the son of Ralph and Daisy Vanover. Carter married his beloved wife, Edith Baker Vanover, on March 18, 1950, and they resided on their family farm on Baker Ridge. Carter was a former coal miner and a local businessman. He owned and operated Vanover Hardware in Clintwood for a number of years. He also was the in-school director of the Neighborhood Youth Corps in the 1960s and 1970s. He also worked at the Haysi Farm Supply for a number of years in the 1970s. Carter was elected commissioner of revenue for Dickenson County in 1979 and served one term. Carter was always active in community and political affairs. He was a member of the Valley View Freewill Baptist Church in Clintwood and missed not being able to attend church after his health began to fail. Carter was predeceased by his parents, Ralph and Daisy Vanover; four brothers, Jim Vanover, Veldon Vanover, Bruce Vanover and Norman Vanover; and one sister, Mabel Hylton. Carter is survived by his wife of 53 years, Edith Baker Vanover; his son, Henry A. Vanover and daughter-in-law, Suzzie B. Vanover; two loving grandchildren, Sarah Elizabeth Vanover and Benjamin Carter Vanover; three sisters, Evie Dotson and Juanita Stanley, both of Clintwood, and Ruth Lily and husband Jack of Cleveland, Va.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Booth, 87, formerly of 1527 Sun Valley Road, Johnson City died Monday, October 13, 2003, in Asbury Place. Mrs. Booth was a native of Bostic, N.C. and had lived most of her life in Johnson City.
