He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II and was a retired heavy equipment operator. Rose Marie Burks BRISTOL, Va. – Ms. Rose Marie Carter Burks passed from this life to God’s perpetual care on Oct. 16, 2003. She was a native of Bluefield, W.Va., and had made her home in the Bristol area for the pass 35 years. Rose was the beloved mother of William Thomas Burks Jr. and the late Kathryn “Kathy” Anne Burks; loving brother, Joe Louis Carter, Bluefield, W.Va.; and loving sister, Ms. Alice C. English; nephew, John (Edie) English Sr., and niece, Mrs. Kimberly (James P. “Jr.”) Brown. Before moving to Bristol, she was a member of Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church and was the pianist for the Gospel Chorus. She was a volunteer for Girl’s Inc. with eight years of service and was a pianist for several area churches. She was predeceased by her daughter, Kathryn “Kathy” Anne Burks, and parents, Albert and Dolly Henry Carter. She died peacefully at Bristol Regional Medical Center. Carmie Fuller Davis SALEM, Va. – Mrs. Carmie Fuller Davis, age 92, passed away Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003, in a Salem hospital. Born Aug. 23, 1911, in Buchanan County, Va., she was a daughter of the late James Madison and Louisa Grace Woosley Fuller. She had lived in the Honaker area until moving to Salem in 1985. She graduated from East Tennessee State University, had been a teacher at Honaker High School and a teacher and librarian at Honaker Elementary School. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Honaker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Henry “Bus” Davis, one daughter, Mary Katherine Holst, two sisters, Narcie Fuller and Cora Presley, and three brothers, Clyde Fuller, Luther E. Fuller and Fred Fuller. In her generation, she was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Ruth and Bobby L. Clark of Roanoke; two grandchildren, Melissa Clark of Baltimore and Robert Clark of Blacksburg, Va., and several nieces and nephews also survive. Greer, age 102, passed away on Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, at Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie. He was a native of Washington County, Va., and was the son of the late Goerge and Louisa Moore Greer. He retired from Norfolk and Western Railroad after 47 years of service. Mr. Greer was a charter member of the Damascus Senior Citizens and the oldest member of the First Baptist Church, where he had served as a deacon and taught Sunday School. He was preceded in death by a infant daughter, six sisters, Bertha Taylor, Maggie Widener, Gertie Moore, Addie Fenner, Rosie Blackburn and Ruth Garrett, and four brothers, Fred Greer, Lonnie Greer, Lloyd Greer and Harley Greer. He is survived by his loving wife of 79 years, Gladys Dolinger Greer; three daughters, Virginia G. Williams and Janice G. Johnson, both of Abingdon, and Linda G. Bobo, and her husband Tim of Cordova, Tenn.; three sons, Rev. James Edward Greer and his wife Nancy of Bedford, Va., Charles P. Greer, and his wife Susan of Lebanon and Robert Wayne Greer and his wife Eileen of North Myrtle Beach, S.C.; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandsons and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Matney was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy and had retired from Burlington Mills. He was a member of Meadowview Presbyterian Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Rachel Baker, Louise Matney and Daisy Matney, and three brothers, Eugene Matney, Stuart Matney and Pete Matney. James Clyde Ward KINGSPORT – James Clyde “Abe” Ward, 61, passed away Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003, at Indian Path Medical Center. Clyde retired from AFG Industries and was a past employee at Mr. Clark’s Furniture Outlet. He attended Sunrise Baptist Church. His parents, Bert and Maggie Ward, sisters, Ann Goad, Sally Smith, Frances Ryans and Nellie Smith, and brothers, Howard Ward and Fred Ward preceded him in death. Surviving are his sons and daughters-in-law, Tony and Kellye Ward, David Ward and Travis and Kim Ward, all of Kingsport; grandchildren, Blake Ward, Grant Ward and Taylor McGlothlin; sisters, Myrtle Davis and Joyce “Jo” Dykes and husband Kelly, all of Kingsport; brother, Robert Ward, Kingsport, and many nieces and nephews. Whitaker PINEY FLATS – Donald Edward Whitaker, 84, 509 Edgefield Road, died Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, in Northside Hospital following a brief illness. He was a native and life-long resident of Sullivan County and was a son of the late Jesse and Nannie Hodges Whitaker. Mr. Whitaker was also preceded in death by his first wife, Mabel Saults Whitaker, in 1981. Mr. Whitaker was a retired employee of Summers Hardware. He was a member and elder of Princeton Presbyterian Church. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Charlton Whitaker; three sons and daughters- in-law, Don and Mary Jane Whitaker, Blountville, Wayne and Cindy Whitaker and Phil and Teresa Whitaker, all of Piney Flats; two sisters, Bessie McKee and Nellie McKee, both of Piney Flats; seven grandchildren, Anita Whitaker, Cari Ann Cunningham, April Hale, Stacy Whitaker, Terry Whitaker, Patrick Whitaker and Christopher Whitaker, and eight great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be conducted 8 p.m. Saturday in the Morris-Baker South Chapel. Rev. John Gullett and Rev. T.R. Gosnell will officiate.
