Margaret Ann Bailey ABINGDON – Margaret Ann Bailey, long-time resident of Abingdon, died as a result of a stroke at Johnston Memorial Hospital on Oct. 18, 2003. She was born on Sept. 10, 1933, in Flatonia, Texas, and moved to Washington County with her former husband Archie Bailey in the 1950s. Her brother Daniel Johnson of Houston and her sister Virginia Startz of Flatonia are still living as are her uncle Anton Pinn, her niece Kathleen and her nephew Derek. Her parents, Woodrow Johnson and Annie Pinn Johnson, and her stepmother Mary Johnson predeceased her. All three of her children are still living. Her youngest child, daughter Abigail Bailey Bell, married to David W. Bell, does computer drafting for the Texas Department of Highways and lives in Hemphill, Texas. Her middle child, daughter Shirley Ann Bailey, and Ms. Bailey’s grandson, Archie Lee Bailey, are successful farmers and live in Clinchburg, Va. And her eldest child, son Ronald Bailey, married to Pamela Cole Friedman, works as a journalist and television producer and lives in Charlottesville and Washington, D.C. At the request of Ms. Bailey, there will be no viewing nor visitation at the funeral home. A graveside service will be held at the Forest Hills Memory Gardens on Monday, Oct. 20, at 2 p.m., with Rev. John E. Massey Jr. officiating. Ms. Bailey wanted specifically to mention her gratitude for the 34 years of friendship she shared with her doctors, colleagues and associates at Johnston Memorial Hospital while she worked in the admissions office, business office, credit office, E.R. clerk’s office and hospital switchboard. Floyd Harless Corns HONAKER – Mr. Floyd Harless Corns, age 86, passed away Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, in a Lebanon nursing facility. Born Feb. 12, 1917, in Swords Creek, Va., he was a son of the late John and Martha Dye Corns and of the Baptist faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Marie Corns, three brothers, Roy Corns, Jess Corns and George Corns, and one sister, Susie Corns. Survivors include two sisters, Artie Compton and Jettie Vance, both of Lexington, Ohio; one special sister-in-law, Ruby Brown of Honaker; one special nephew, Terry Dean Corns of Honaker, and several additional nieces and nephews also survive. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, a retired coal truck driver and was of the Christian faith. Fred “Peanut” Severt, 76, died Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, at NHC Healthcare of Bristol in Bristol Virginia. A son of the late Avery Hampton Severt Sr. and Bernice Roxie McGlamery Severt, he was born in Marion. Mr. Severt was a retired employee of Piggly-Wiggly and Food City, where he worked for over 50 years. A member of Anderson Street United Methodist Church, he was president of the Men’s Club, was on the administrative board, a trustee, a lay leader and a member of the Jo Mehaffey Sunday School Class. He was also one of the first men to initiate the Meals on Wheels Program locally. Mr. Severt was preceded in death by an infant son, Charles Willard Severt, his wife, Helen Lena Severt, and six brothers and sisters. Survivors include six brothers, Robert Severt of Englewood, Fla., Avery Severt of Atlanta, Henry Severt of Akron, Ohio, Hugh Severt of Newton, N.C., James Walter Severt of Martinsville, Va., and Zeb Severt of Coyohoga Falls, Ohio; three sisters, Mabel Blevins of Baltimore, Betty Rouse of Chilhowie and Hazel Rowland of Bluff City, and several nieces and nephews. (Pawley) Thomas, age 77, passed away Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, at 9:45 p.m. at the Hospice House in Bristol after a brief illness. Beryl was born in High Wycombe, England, Jan. 16, 1926, and was a daughter of the late John William and Hilda (Brewer) Pawley. She worked for many years for Pave Well Paving as secretary. She was a member of Living Waters Freewill Baptist Church. She came to America as a war bride during World War II. In addition to her parents, her brother John Pawley preceded her in death in 1990. Her greatest loves were her family, her special English friends and her church, where she served as treasurer for many years. Beryl is survived by her husband of 56 years, Earl Thomas of the home; her sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Jo Thomas of Elizabethton and Graham and Sylvia Thomas of Kingsport; grandchildren, Rebecca Cox and John Thomas of Kingsport, Tony and Richard Thomas, both of Elizabethton; great-grandchildren, Cameron, Seth and Gavin Cox, Pierce and Aja Thomas, Jared, Jacob and Jillian Thomas and Chandler Thomas; sister, Jean Harris and her husband David of New Castle, Pa.; brother, Rex Pawley and wife Edith of England, and a sister-in-law, Peggy Pawley of England.
