Harley T. Stallard, 86, Big Stone Gap, Va. Charles Vivian Wheeler Jr., 85, Marion Clarence Adkins CLINCHCO, Va. – Clarence Adkins, 86, died at his home on Saturday, Oct. 18, 2003, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. He was the son of the late Dave and Elizabeth Puckett Adkins and was preceded in death by his wife, Marie Stewart Adkins, a brother, Oscar Adkins, and sisters, Glenna Davis, Stella Sutherland, Ann May and Lillian Leffew. Mr. Adkins was a life-long resident of the Clinchco area. He received an accounting degree from Johnson City Business College and worked as an accountant for Clinchfield Coal Corp. for over 40 years, retiring in 1980 to take care of his wife. He was a fine gentleman who will be missed by everyone. Surviving are two sons: Dan (Jessica) Adkins, Clinchco; and Rick (Deborah) Adkins, Cape Coral, Fla.; three daughters: Drema (Earl) Latherow and Dilla Robinson, Ft. Myers, Fla.; and Diannah (John) Fleming, Richmond; two sisters, Nevalee Deel and Bonnie Wallace, Clintwood; one brother, David (Dorothy) Adkins, Pickney, Mich.; a brother-in-law, Paul May, Bluefield, W.Va.; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2003, from the Clinchco Missionary Baptist Church, with Rev. Joey Fuller and Rev. William Compton officiating. Burial will follow at the Kiser-Stewart Cemetery, Dante. Friends may call after 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Clintwood Funeral Home, with an evening service at 7 p.m. Music provided at both services by Mr. Chester Robinette. The family suggests in lieu of flowers that memorial contributions be made to the Clinchco Missionary Baptist Church and the Faith Bible Church, also in Clinchco. Pallbearers will be Wayne Sutherland, Bob Deel, Bill Patton and other nephews. The body will be taken to the church one hour prior to services. Elsie H. Crabtree CLINTWOOD – Elsie Hoback “Terry” Crabtree, age 92, passed away Monday, Oct. 20, 2003, at Norton Community Hospital. She attended the Primitive Baptist church, had owned and operated Crabtree Grocery Store and had lived most of her life in Dickenson County. She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Truda Ann Roberts; and her great- grandson, Christopher Taylor. Her survivors are: daughters, Thelma Roberts of Clintwood, Maxine Raines of Fredericksburg and Joann Dotson of Rutledge, Tenn.; sister, Ollie Carter of Bean Station, Tenn.; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great- grandchildren. Janice Deane Hand DAMASCUS, Va. – Janice Deane Hand, age 63, of 511 Reed St., passed away on Saturday, Oct. 18, 2003, at her residence. She was a native of Carter County, Tenn., but had lived in Damascus since 1968. She was the daughter of the late Samuel and Geneva Haskell Dugger. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul P. Hand. Mrs. Hand was a substitute teacher in the Washington County schools for many years and was a former member of the Damascus Town Council. She is survived by one sister, Linda Hyder and her husband, Jim, of Elizabethton, Tenn; one niece, Janet Nelson; one nephew, Jimmy Hyder; one great- nephew, Chase Nelson, all of Florida; one sister-in-law, Gladys Stanfield, of Damascus; a special friend, Lewis Davenport; and also several special friends at Riverside Camp Ground. Jessee LEBANON, Va. – Miss Thelma S. Jessee, age 93, died Sunday, Oct. 19, 2003 after a lengthy illness. Her parents were the late Gilmer and Gertrude Baker Jessee. A native of Russell County, Thelma was a farm owner and cattle producer in the upper Moccasin Valley. She was a member of the Oak Grove United Methodist Church and active in church and community affairs until her illness confined her to the home. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Howard G. Jessee; a sister, Jeannette Jessee Mays; and two nieces, Jeane M. Bivins and Virginia Karen Tauscher. Surviving are: a sister, Carolyn Jessee Cooper, Kingsport; a nephew, Michael E. Jessee, Lebanon; a niece, Peggy Mays Dean, Kingsport; two great-nephews, Jeffrey S. Miller ABINGDON, Va. – Willard Humphrey Miller, age 79, died Sunday, Oct. 19, 2003, in Alpharetta, Ga. He is survived by his wife, Mary Patricia; and three sons and their families: Craig and Carolyn Miller and children, Megan, Ben, Hamilton, Mallory, Alex and Carson of Alpharetta; John and Kathlyn Miller and children, Michelle and Kyle of Glen Ellyn, Ill.; and Tom and Caroline Miller and children, Michael and Elizabeth of Stone Mountain, Ga. He was born in Big Stone Gap, Va., the son of Willard Sale and Louise Goodloe Miller. He was a graduate of Washington and Lee University, served three years in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a retailer by profession, working for Miller and Rhoads in Richmond and Fieldcrest Mills in Columbus, Ga., and, after retirement, was owner of Miller Antiques in Abingdon. He held a life-long love for family, friends, flowers, theater, travel, antiques and all things beautiful. He enjoyed life to the fullest. Born on Sept. 27, 1926, in Russell County, Va., she was a daughter of the late Bailey Ball and Lina Whited Ball. She was a former resident of Washington County. Harley T. Stallard BIG STONE GAP, Va. – Harley T. Stallard, 86, died Monday, Oct. 20, 2003, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Norton following a lengthy illness. He was born May 12, 1917, the son of the late Jerry Trigg and Flora (Taylor) Stallard. Mr. Stallard was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He served as a president of the Big Stone Gap Lions Club. A member of both the First Baptist Church in Big Stone Gap and the North Side Baptist Church in Dade City, Fla., Mr. Stallard was a deacon and taught the Men’s Sunday School Class in Big Stone Gap since 1954. Mr. Stallard enjoyed a career of 42 years with the Wise County School System. He taught in a one-room school house, drove a bus and taught high school English. He served as the first principal of Powell Valley High School. He was a director of instruction for the Wise County School System. Mr. Stallard retired in 1978 as Wise County superintendent of schools. He was preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters. Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Bunnie R. Stallard; four sons: H.T. Stallard Jr. of Hartsville, Tenn.; Robert R. Stallard of Blacksburg, Va.; Michael Stallard of Sacramento, Calif.; and Larry P. Stallard of Mt. Sterling, Ky.; three daughters: Anita Dorton of Jonesborough, Tenn.; Nancy Wampler of Big Stone Gap, Va.; and Addie Crawley of Catawba, Va.; 13 grandchildren; and five great- grandchildren. He was a member of Cedar Bluff Baptist Church, Atkins, Va., a retired volunteer for the Marion Volunteer Fire Department and a member of Masonic Lodge 31 AF&AM.
