Arthur Tolley, Glade Spring, Va. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Concetto Arena RICHLANDS – Mr. Concetto “Cungie” Arena, age 87, passed away Monday, Oct. 20, 2003, at the Mountain View Retirement Home in Lebanon after a lengthy illness. He was born Feb. 12, 1916, in Littletown, Pa., the oldest of 10 children. He was the son of the late Luigi and Angelina Allatto Arena. He lived most of his life in Bartley, W.Va., Honaker and the Richlands areas. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Richlands. He was a retired coal miner, having worked at Bradshaw No. 6, Bartley No. 3, Bartley No. 1, Beatrice and VP No. 1 for Island Creek Coal Company. He also worked at Clinchfield Moss No. 3, Channey Creek, Lambert Fork and Seaboard No. 1 and No. 2 for the Pittston Coal Corporation. He retired in 1984 after 52 years in or around the coal industry. He was a member of Local Union 1760 of the United Mine Workers Association. He owned and operated a shoe repair shop and a drive-in restaurant. He was a member of the Italian Sons & Daughters of America Chapter in Princeton, W.Va. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dallas Arena, son, Ross Arena, daughter, Carol Sue Wimmer, and three sisters, Jeannie Crites, Josephine Tamborelli and Mary Cook. He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Tony L. and Paula M. Arena of Richlands; one grandson, Tech Sgt.. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Mountain Home, Tenn. He was born in Sugar Grove, Va., to the late Waddy Ashlin and Minnie Carrico Ashlin, and was preceded in death by his wife, Lona Mae Adkins Ashlin. He retired from Brunswick in the defense department and served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Mr. Barnes was a retired employee of the Sullivan County School System and attended Bluff City Baptist Church. He was a World War II Army veteran. McNeil Brooks Sr. JOHNSON CITY – McNeil Brooks Sr., age 81, 328 Holly St., died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2003, at his residence following a lengthy illness. Mr. Brooks was a native of Wilder County, Va., and had lived in Dante, Va., most of his life before moving to Johnson City in 1987. He was a son of the late William G. and Fonnie Stevens Brooks. Mr. Brooks retired in 1983 after 43 years of service from Clinchfield Coal Company, where he was a coal miner. He was a member for over 60 years and former president of the United Mine Workers Association Local 1098. Mr. Brooks was a World War II Navy veteran, where he served on the Destroyer Maddox. He was a former Scout leader and Scout master with the Boy Scouts of America, Dante. Mr. Brooks was a member and deacon of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Johnson City, and was member and treasurer of the church’s Nifty Fifty Club. In addition to his parents, Mr. Brooks was preceded in death by his stepmother, Maude Stevens Brooks, his first wife, Ruth Dishman Brooks in 1993, and one brother, Carlos Brooks. He is survived by his wife, Ennis G. She was born in Sandy Huff, W.Va., and was the daughter of the late Lawrence G. “L.G.” and Olivia McNeil Compton, both Buchanan County natives. She was a life-long resident of the Whitewood area, a graduate of Honaker High School and attended Pikeville College, where she received a bachelor’s degree in art and science. Mrs. Farmer was a retired Buchanan County School teacher, teaching 28 years, and was a member of the Garden Creek Church of Christ. In addition to her parents, she was preceded by her husband, Mr. Mervin B. Farmer, and two brothers, Herman and Arthur Compton. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Lindsey Jr. CHICAGO – Harold M. Lindsey Jr., age 79, of 150 Maples St., passed away Oct. 15, 2003, at the Westside VA Medical Center in Chicago. He was born Dec. 19, 1923, in Bristol Virginia to Myrtle Wisler Lindsey and Harold Lindsey Sr., who preceded him in death. He grew up in Bristol where he graduated from Bristol Virginia High School and attended King College. He served in the European Theater during World War II and was a commercial artist in the Chicago area until his retirement. He was a member of the Episcopal church. He is survived by several cousins. Anna was active in several women church groups at First Presbyterian Church in Hendersonville, N.C., where she was a member. She was active with the P.T.A.s in various communities. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Ruth R. Gunnell of Columbia, S.C., and Susan R. DeHart of Sparta, Tenn.; two sons, Robert D. Renegar of Richmond and Stephen E. She was born in the Barachty Kievs Region of the Ukraine. She received a Medal of Labor for more than 25 years of her work as a painter for the Scientific Institute for Diamond Research and Development in the Ukraine. She was a member of the Ukranian Pentecostal Church and her home church was Church of the Glad Tidings. She was preceded in death by her parents, Nikolay Morgun and Ustiniya Musienko. She was a loving mother and grandmother. She is survived by her son, Viktor Ovcharenko and his wife Viktoriya; a sister, Nadezda Goncharova, and a brother, Grigoriy Morgun, both of the Ukraine, and two grandsons, Aleksandr and Vadim Ovcharenko. The funeral service will be conducted at 7 o’clock Thursday evening at the Church of the Glad Tidings of Bristol Tennessee, with Reverend Timothy Rice and Reverend Viktor Prokhnevskiy officiating. Kenneth A. Simmons Sr. POUNDING MILL, Va. – Mr. Kenneth Albert Simmons Sr., age 71, of the Paintlick section, died Wednesday, Oct. 22,, 2003, at a Richlands hospital. He was born in Red Ash, Va., and was a son of the late Belle Franklin and Mary Jane Hill Simmons, both Tazewell County natives. He was a life-long resident of the Paintlick area and was a retired employee of S & S Corp. at Claypool Hill, Va. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Richlands and a member of the Cedar Bluff Lodge 260 A.F. & A.M. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Michael Keith Simmons, and a brother, Andy Elmer Simmons. He was born in Smyth County and was preceded in death by his father, Earl Stamper, and a daughter, Sandra Mae Stamper. He was employed by the Norfolk/Southern Railroad for over 35 years and was a member of the Faith Life Baptist Church in Montvale, Va. He was a member of the NRA and an avid hunter and fisherman. Survivors include wife of 36 years, Mary Stamper; mother, Rosa Lee Stamper, Chilhowie; two daughters, Rhonda and Gene Wilhelm, Vinton, Va., and Dora and Michael Pietrzyk, Vinton; grandchildren, Anna Pietrzyk, Daniel Wilhelm, Matthew Pietrzyk and one expected in December, Alex Wilhelm; one brother, Eddie Stamper, Chilhowie; three sisters, Donna Houck, Chilhowie, Cathy Woods, Chilhowie and Becky Sawyers, Chilhowie; mother-in-law, Annie Overbay, Troutville, Va., and several nieces, nephews and many friends also survive. Arthur Tolley GLADE SPRING, Va. – Arthur “Star” Tolley passed from this life to continue his walk with Jesus on Oct. 21, 2003. His 14-year battle with cancer ended at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. “Star” was born and raised in Saltville. He was preceded in death by his father, Jack Tolley, mother, Nanny Tolley, sisters, Estelle Austin and Ruth Taylor, and brother, James Tolley. He graduated from Saltville High School in 1950, where he was given the nickname “Star” for his outstanding athletic abilities. He was known for his faith in the Lord, love for his wife and family and his dedication to his church, where he was an elder of Main Street Christian Church, Saltville. “Star” could usually be found in his beautiful rose garden or in a trout stream following his passion for fishing. Mr. Warren was a life-long resident of Sullivan County and an active member of the Democratic Party. He was a devoted member of Cross United Methodist Church, where he held many offices. He retired from Imperial Reading Company after 41 years of service as distribution manager. He joined the firm in the late 1930s and helped the company develop through the years from the Big Jack Manufacturing Company to the Blue Ridge Manufacturing Company and finally to Imperial Reading. After retirement, he enjoyed spending quality time working on his farm. He often referred to the animals as his friends. His parents, Henry Steve and Maudie Childress Warren, and his wife of 62 years, Ruby Cross Warren, preceded him in death. Mr. Warren is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Jack (Elizabeth) Moore of Severn, Md., Mrs. Kyle (Georgia) Morrell of Danville, Va., and Mrs. Albert (Glenna) Moore of Bristol Virginia; two grandsons, Jonathan Morrell of Christiansburg, Va., and Albert Moore II of Blacksburg, Va.; three granddaughters, Michelle Phillips of Bellevue, Neb., Rebecca Crane of Hillsborough, N.C., and Kathryn Wojciechowski of Eldersburg, Md.; four great- grandsons; six great-granddaughters; one brother, Henry Steve Warren Jr. of Bristol Tennessee; two sisters, Ruby Tolliver of Ft. Myers, Fla., and Laura Jewell Minnick of Blountville, and several nieces and nephews.
