She was a native of Abingdon and daughter of the late Clifford S. and Ollie Mae Lester Clark. She was a member of Fellowship Chapel, where she was a Sunday School teacher and a member of the Dorcas Circle. She was a graduate of William King High School and attended Mary Dalton Frye Business School. Survivors include her husband of 59 years, Clifford J. She was the daughter of the late Aaron Lee and Martha Jane Vanover Church. She was born in Dickenson County, Va., and a member of the Pound Fork Primitive Baptist Church in Clintwood for 57 years. Other than her parents, her husband, Elder Volley Church, a son, Kendall Church, and a brother, Edwin Vanover, preceded her in death. Surviving are two sons, Haster and Avery Church, Columbus; six daughters, Ina Jean Hill and husband Shelton, Clintwood, Velva Mullins and husband Bill of Wise, Connie Sharon Mullins and husband Roger of South Point, Edna Brooks and Lorene Carter, both of Clintwood, and Nettie Riley of Stewartstown, Pa.; one sister, Velva Vanover of Clintwood; 36 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren. Phyllis Collier KINGSPORT – Phyllis Jane Harbor Collier, 56, of 1016 Laurelwood Drive, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 23, 2003, at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Phyllis was born in Jonesville, Va., on Aug. 23, 1947, to parents Paul and Martha Rhea Harbor, both of whom preceded Phyllis in death. She resided in Big Stone Gap for several years of her adult life and had resided in Kingsport for the past 10 years. She was dearly loved and will be sadly missed by all of her family and numerous friends. She was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and she was employed by First Tennessee Bank as a vice-president and branch manager. Phyllis was very active in numerous charitable activities and community projects, which included the Mountain Empire Community College Foundation, the United Way, Kingsport Girls Club, Kingsport SHOUT Program, Kiwanis Reading Program, the Downtown Kingsport Association, the Kingsport Chamber of Commerce, the Wise County Chamber of Commerce, the Gap Corp. and was currently vice- president of the Kiwanis Club in Kingsport. She received many awards that recognized her contributions, including being named the Wise County Citizen of the Year. Surviving are her devoted husband and best friend, Louis Collier Sr., Kingsport; a daughter and son-in-law, Dianna and Kevin Bolinskey, of Charlottesville; two stepsons and stepdaughters-in-law, Louis Jr. and Sandy Collier of Salem, Va., and Steven and Shelley Collier of Kingsport; grandchildren, Nathan, Chase, Logan, Amanda, Mekenzie, David, Sam and Sydney; three sisters and brothers-in- law, Barbara Sue and Jim Poff of Troutville, Va., Judy and Frank Fisher of Reidsville, N.C., and Polly and Rodney Smith of Martinsburg, W.Va., and brother and sister-in-law, Allen and Sandy Harbor of Norfolk, Va. She was born July 24, 1910, to the late Azor Wilson Taylor and Martha Greer Taylor and was the widow of Ralph Cross. She was a charter member of Bethel View Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School for nearly 40 years. Mrs. Cross was the oldest living member of Bethel View Baptist Church. Born Jan. 12, 1943, in Tazewell County, Va., she was a daughter of Nora Kinder Webb Ward of Jewell Ridge, Va., and the late Hally Webb. She had lived in the Richlands area prior to moving to King in July. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her stepfather, Stewart “Red” Ward, and two brothers, James “Jimmy” Webb and Roger Dale Ward. Walker McMurray BLOUNTVILLE – Walker “Jr.” McMurray, age 67, went to be with his Lord at 7:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, 2003, in the James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center at Mountain Home, Tenn., following a period of declining health. Born in Hiltons, Va., on Jan. 30, 1936, a son of the late Rev. Walker and Hester Carter McMurray, he had resided in Sullivan County for the last 39 years. Mr. McMurray retired from Sullivan County maintenance after 21 years of service. He was of the Baptist faith. Mr. McMurray was a veteran of the Korean conflict, having served in the U.S. Army. He will be remembered as a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother. He was an avid musician, gardener and nature lover. Mr. McMurray was preceded in death by six brothers, Virgil McMurray, Rhea McMurray, Frank McMurray, Rev. Grady McMurray, Hershel McMurray and Eugene McMurray, and one sister, Ollie McMurray. Mildred Keen Whitt RICHLANDS – Mrs. Mildred Keen Whitt, age 73, passed away Thursday, Oct. 23, 2003, in a Tazewell, Va., hospital following a lengthy illness. Born in Eckhart, W.Va., she was the daughter of Glen Keen of Rochester, Wash., and the late Ruby Pearl Cook Keen. She was of the Presbyterian faith. In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by one brother, Glen Junior Keen, two infant brothers, Carlows Eugene Keen and Willard Keen, and one infant sister, Ruth Keen. In addition to her father, she is survived by her husband of 57 1/2 years, John R. Whitt; three daughters, Mrs. Linda Pendry and husband Charles of Winston Salem, N.C., Mrs. Brenda Lamie and husband Buster and Mrs. Ruby Dye and husband Carl (Cork), both of Richlands; two sisters, Mrs. Lula Bell Keen of Portland, Ore., and Mrs. Mary Ball and husband Douglas of Bumpass, Va.; two brothers, James Keen and wife Ruth and Richard Keen and wife Linda, all of Washington state; six grandchildren; three step-grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren also survive. Special thanks to Dr. Brian Maggard and the entire staff of Tazewell Community Hospital for their compassion, concern and caring of, not only Mom, but of the entire family. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003, at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff, with Mr. Shane Breeding officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Va. Pallbearers will be Carl Dye, Charles Pendry, Buster Lamie, Doug Dye, Chris Dye and Bradley Lamie. Honorary pallbearers will be David Bullion, Erik Burks, Austin Burks and Joshua Dye. Singleton Funeral Service is serving the Whitt family. June Sheffield York BRISTOL, Va. – June Sheffield York, age 82, passed away on Friday, Oct. 24, 2003, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was born in Glade Springs, Va., the daughter of the late Brack D. and Evelyn Williams Sheffield. She was a member of Tennessee Avenue Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Edward York, and a brother, Robert Sheffield. Survivors include daughter, Jackie York Leonard and husband Ron Davenport of Bristol Virginia; son, Thomas Richard Palmer of Glade Springs; grandchildren, Cristalle and Todd Leonard, and very special nieces and nephews, Ron Dupriest and Walda Dupriest Brandt and Paul Whisman and wife Donna. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003, at 3 p.m. in the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Joe Hudson officiating. Committal services will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. at Mountain View Cemetery. Pallbearers include Ron Dupriest, Dale Whitman, Paul Whisman, Ron Smallwood, Glen Goad and Gene Kistner.
