White, 93, Abingdon -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- George W. Barnes George William Barnes, age 87, died Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003, in the James H. Quillen Veteran Affairs Medical Center at Mountain Home, Tenn. He was born Jan. 20, 1916, in the Holston community of Sullivan County, Tenn., a son of the late Elbert Fulton Barnes and Bettie Hawk Barnes, and remained a life-long resident of Holston. He was a graduate of Holston Institute and attended King College. George Barnes served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army for 2½ years. Mr. Barnes was a teacher and principal in the Sullivan County School System from 1936-1941, and was an employee of the Kingsport Press in 1941, and Tennessee Eastman Company in 1942, before answering his country’s call. Upon discharge from the Army in 1946, he returned to employment in the transportation department at Tennessee Eastman, where he remained until retirement in 1978. Mr. Barnes enjoyed life and focused on love for his family. He loved God and was an active lifelong member of Wheeler United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday School for more than 50 years and served as superintendent for more than 20 years. He chaired the official board for several terms and served his church in many other varied capacities. He loved music and sang in the church choir and was a member of the Methodist Men. He also held church offices on the district and conference level and was privileged to attend the national meeting of Methodist Men at Purdue University on four occasions. He was a charter member of the Holston Ruritan Club in which he held various offices. He was twice named the club’s “Man of the Year.” He enjoyed gardening photography, travel and, most of all, being with family and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Ralph, James and Joe, and his son-in-law, Joe Galliher. Mr. Barnes is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Thelma Gray Barnes; four daughters, Bettie Barnes Galliher of Bristol Virginia, Sue Barnes Mielke and her husband David of Gastonia, N.C., Mary Jo Barnes Craft and her husband Gene of Roanoke and Patsi Barnes Trollinger and her husband Richard of Danville, Ky.; six grandchildren, Patrick Galliher and his wife DeeDee, William Galliher and his wife Sandy, Matthew Mielke, Laura Mielke and her husband Scott Hanrath and Mary and Elizabeth Trollinger, and two great-grandchildren, Nathan and Haley Galliher. There is also a loving extended family of cousins, in-laws, nephews and nieces. A funeral service of worship, giving thanks to God for the life of George William Barnes, will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2003, at the Wheeler United Methodist Church, with Rev. Stuart Albee and Rev. Dr. David Mielke officiating. Burial will follow in Tri-Cities Memory Gardens. Attendants and honorary attendants are nephews, George K. Floy Lee Bryant GLADE SPRING – Mrs. Floy Lee Johnson Bryant, age 85, passed away Saturday, Oct. 25, 2003, in the Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon. Mrs. Bryant was born in Ashe County, N.C., Oct. 3, 1918, and had lived most of her life in the Lodi community of Washington County, Va. She was a member of the Damascus Senior Citizens and was a homemaker. Mrs. Bryant was a devoted mother and endured many hardships in her life. She was preceded in death by her father, Thomas Edward Johnson, her mother, Mary Melissa Oliver Johnson, her husband, James D. Bryant Sr., a son, Thomas Guy Bryant, a grandson, Eric Young Bryant, four brothers, Carl, Arthur, Glenn and Delmer, and five sisters, Clevie, Edith, Ethel, Vonnie and Mary. He was born in Tanner, W.Va., a son of the late Ray D. and Clara Wells Frymyer, and had lived in Bristol since 1966. He was a former employee of Campbell Motors and Widener Corporation, and was a member of Higher Ground Fellowship Church of God. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sybil Miller Frymyer. He was born in Dickenson County, Va., a son of the late Levi and Virgie Mullins, and moved to Bristol in 1945. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was a recipient of the Purple Heart and the Silver Star. He owned and operated the Volunteer Market for many years and was of the Baptist faith. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marcella Hickman Mullins; a daughter, Pam Orr and her fiancé Randy Pippin of Bristol Tennessee; a sister, Hermie Rhymer of Bristol; two grandsons, Russell Orr and Chad Orr; two great- grandchildren, Alexandria Orr and Jacob Orr, and 11 nieces and nephews. Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late N.C. Sr. and Ruth McCoy Nicewander. He was a life-long resident of Buchanan County prior to moving to Abingdon in 1989, a graduate of Grundy High School and was a member of Harman Memorial Baptist Church. Mr. Nicewander was owner and operator of Nicewander’s Produce Market in Grundy for several years and was a professional truck driver. Salmon Jr. BRISTOL – Harold J. “Hal” Salmon Jr., age 70, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2003, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was the son of the late Harold J. Sr. and Elsa Lau Salmon and had been a resident of Bristol for around 50 years. He was a former art instructor at the Job Corps and also served as band director at various schools in southwest Virginia. He was a member of the Worldwide Church of God, where he served as a choir and band director and a was a U.S. Army veteran. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie McNutt Salmon. Survivors include special friend, Sandee Jones. Graveside services will be held on Tuesday at the National Cemetery in Mountain Home, Tenn., with Brent Fieldler officiating. Helen Ward SALTVILLE – Helen Marie Kelly Ward, age 88, died Friday, Oct. 24, 2003, at her home in Saltville. Born Dec. 16, 1914, she was the widow of Edward Ward, daughter of the late William Monroe Kelly and Clara Isabel Gilbert Kelly, and the oldest and last of four daughters. She was also preceded in death by two daughters, Shelby Lorraine Burch and Daphne Rhea Ward. Mrs. Ward was a member of McCready United Methodist Church and a cook at the McCready Head Start for many years, where she was known to the children as “grandmother” or “Miss Ward.” Survivors: two daughters, Joan Puckett and husband George, Southern Pines, N.C., and Grayson MacDonald and husband Bob, Charlotte, N.C.; two sons, Robert Leslie Ward and wife Nellie, Fincastle, Va., and Blaine Ward and wife Pat, Saltville; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 27, 2003, at Henderson’s Funeral Home, with Rev. John Roe officiating. Burial will follow in the Elizabeth Cemetery in Saltville.
