Whitt Jr., 85, Steelesburg, Va. Spencer G. Adams WISE – Spencer Greenfield Adams, 75, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, Oct. 27, 2003, at his home. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Air Force. He worked at the Wise Hospital for several years, was a manager for several different Payless Stores for several years and worked for the United States Forestry Division for 14 years until the Lord called him home. He loved the Lord and knew him as his personal Savior and was of the Pentecostal faith. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Taylor and Dicy Roberts Adams; three sisters, infant Peggy Jo Adams, Lenore Kilgore and Virginia Franklin; and one brother, James Taylor Adams Jr. He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Charlotte Adams; and a very special pet Birman cat that he lovingly named “Babys Adams;” six sons: Jimmy Adams of Kansas City, Mo.; Mark Adams of Wise; twins, Brent Adams of Newport, Tenn., and Kent Adams of Wise, Va.; Spencer Todd Adams of Wise; and Billy R. Shuler Jr. of Denton, N.C.; four daughters: Pam Adams of Wise; Caroline Litton of Woodway, Va.; Janice Gray of Lexington, N.C.; and Paula Collins of Wise; 26 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters:Naomia Mullins of Wise and Eva Pegram of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and one brother, Simpson Adams of Ohio. Henry Counts LEBANON – Henry Counts, 82, died Monday, Oct. 27, 2003, in the Russell County Medical Center. Born Dec. 22, 1920, in Russell County, the son of the late Willis Counts and Lydia Holbrook Counts, he was a farmer. He was a U. S. Navy veteran of World War II, having served on the battleship Alabama for 38 months. A graduate of Temple Hill High School, he was an avid Castlewood High School sports fan. He was an active member of the Russell County Farm Bureau and was of the Baptist faith. Henry loved gardening, hunting and fishing. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Anna Jessee Counts; two daughters and sons-in-law: Martha Kiser and husband Gary Kiser, Ft. She was born July 24, 1910, to the late Azor Wilson Taylor and Martha Greer Taylor and was the widow of Ralph Cross. She was a charter member of Bethel View Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School for nearly 40 years. Mrs. Cross was the oldest living member of Bethel View Baptist Church. She had made her home in the Doran area all of her life and was a retired employee of the Tazewell County School System, having worked at the Richlands Elementary School. Born in Scott County, Va., he was a son of the late Elisha Thomas Harper and Thursie Olinger Harper. He was retired from the Raytheon Corp. He had been a Baptist minister for 55 years and was a member of the Blue Springs Primitive Baptist Church, Hiltons. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant sister, Zelda Harper. He was preceded in death by his mother, Armanda Giles; one brother, John Mabe; one sister, Bunie Lunsford; and a great-grandson, Jason Scott. Mr. Mabe worked as a welder in Pennsylvania and after retirement returned to Mountain City to make his home. He had been actively involved in his church and had served as a deacon, choir director and sang bass for the Evangelistic Gospel Quartet. In recent years, Mr. Mabe was ordained into ministry and served as chaplin for the Senior Citizens Living. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Mountain City for the past 10 years.
